Came highly recommended in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood FB page, so I contacted them. Normally I contact at least three companies for anything I want done, but didn't bother in this case because, again, they were highly recommended. I thought my move would be on 3/9 but I was informed on 2/28 that I had to move out THAT DAY (misunderstanding with apartment management). Thankfully this company was able to squeeze me in the next day, on 3/1. Ernie, the owner, is quite responsive on email. He quoted their 3 hour minimum since I was moving only the big items from a 1br apt: queen bed, 2 desks, 2 TV cabinets, 2 TVs, 2 a/c in boxes, a couch and ottoman. Movers came on time. I wrapped all the drawers myself the night before using cling wrap just so the drawers (desk, TV cabinet, etc) would not slide out. I just did a couple passes because I figured they would wrap it some more when they came. Nope! All they wrapped in blankets were my 2 TVs, nothing else. My precious wooden furniture (oak desk, TV cabinet, etc) were all placed directly on the dolly on their sides. It was my first Jersey move. Do they do things differently in Jersey? I wondered. When I got to the truck though, they had a PILE of neatly folded blankets. So they DO wrap things, just not my things. One of the 4 guys kept saying things to the effect of "Three hour minimum, right? We got you!" throughout the move, as if to say "we're fast and efficient, you'll see." They did finish 15 mins under 3 hours, however... My stuff are all dinged up. To disassemble my brass bed, they used a hammer and scratched it up. The first guy used the wooden part of the hammer to disassemble. The second guy used the metal part of the hammer to assemble. I even had to ask him to use SOMETHING (anything!) to protect the bed instead of hitting the bed directly, metal to metal. There was also a point when they did not fully disassemble the bed and were trying to jam it through the stair entrance even if it was clearly hitting the top opening of my stairs (ceiling), so they nicked that, too. Strangely the check I wrote out was returned (confusion with bank). Upon realizing this, I contacted the owner right away to tell him I would check what happened with the bank and make good whatever I owed him for the move. I took that chance to give him feedback on his crew. When I followed up, he said they claim they wrapped everything in the truck. First, they didn't. I watched them load and unload everything. Second, if they did, why are all my stuff dinged? Owner said "Send me pictures of the damage and we will set you up a repair." How will he repair scratches on my brass bed and oak desk??? It's not worth the inconvenience. Stay away. You've been warned. One star is because Yelp would not allow zero stars and Ernie, the owner, deserves at least one star for being responsive and understanding about my returned check. read more

Moved yesterday from an apartment into a house and it was a breeze. There were 5 guys and all were accommodating, professional, funny and overall personable. This was my first move by myself, and I was a nervous wreck but the crew was like "we got you" and they did! Not a single thing went wrong. I had an item that I asked to be extra careful with and they went above and beyond. So so grateful to them. Although didn't get a chance to meet Earnie in person, he was very patient and kind explaining everything every step of the way. The quote actually came out less, so yay! These guys work hard and as a woman there's no way I can lift a quarter of want these guys haul. I appreciate the hard work, so really don't mind tipping well. Plus it's the holidays. read more

This was the best move I've ever had, even though it was one of my most complicated. I have a huge and heavy couch that had to go off a balcony. I had a four man crew, but the owner Ernie also showed up to make sure the balcony move went off without a hitch. Then the movers Brian and Tony went totally above and beyond in making sure the rest of the move went smoothly. Ernie the owner is great, personable and fair. Overall the move was ok but I wanted to warn others of a few things. The day of our move one of the movers told me I better tip them very well bc they would be saving us money/time. I found it shady and immediately went to my husband who found out they expected quite a substantial tip. Did not like that I was cornered and told this. They took a 2 hour plus lunch bc it was free hot dog day which delayed our move in process. Then they argued and got tired to the point of not wanting to carry my husbands bureau upstairs. I said there is no way he can do it so get to it. It was uncomfortable and frankly I know it's not a glamorous job but I wouldn't hire them again. read more

Amazing from the first phone call to booking. Booked them 24 hours Nina stance after realizing we were nuts trying to move without movers. The moving team arrived on time, and wore masks inside the house at all times. They were extremely careful with all belongings, super kind and very funny. Rittenhouse came highly recommended and I can't say enough good things about these guys. Ernie came over and gave us a quote about a month before our move. His estimate was one of the more reasonable ones we received. The day of our move 6 guys showed up with 2 trucks (Ernie only told us 5 guys - but who was I to complain) and they were right on time. They helped me wrap a few of the big screen TV's and other delicate items. The Rittenhouse team was awesome - they were super friendly and had me laughing all day even though it was a stressful day. They were super efficient - packed the truck brilliantly and did not break anything. The strength these men had in getting some of my furniture up flights of stairs was amazing. The only thing they did that scared me was go to lunch for an hour with all my earthly possessions in tow. This was during the transport time and they did not charge me for that hour. But not knowing where ALL my things were was a little nerve-racking. At the end of the LONG day I thought they were going to charge me overtime fees but we actually came in a couple hundred dollars less than the original quote. I gave the hard working guys all nice tips and offered them all a cold beer! I would hire Ernie's team anytime! read more

I want to say that the owner, Ernie is friendly and overall a very nice person but unaware of his crew. There is definitely a smell of alcohol on some of the guys and it brought my expectations down to 0 when I smelled that. My furniture was not handled well and there were damages that can't be repaired. They did not put together the high boy in my master bedroom but stacked the parts only for me to find out later that day when it almost toppled on top of me. Near the end of the move they started to bring in things so quickly that I couldn't direct where to put things so they just dropped things wherever they could. They said they had to be somewhere and that they were late. I went to give a tip to each of the seven men. The younger guys accepted graciously but the older fellows had a real attitude problem. They even had the nerve to say that they couldn't afford dinner on the tip I gave. One even grabbed the money without saying thank you. He didn't even look me in the eye and he was supposedly the boss of the crew that day. Never again. read more

I would not recommend this company to anyone moving. My move last year from a three bedroom home to an apartment was easier and cheaper than using this company to move from an apartment to another apartment in the same complex. I was quoted a lower price than I paid due to the hourly rate and fees not discussed. What was supposed to be a three to four hour job turned into five hours due to the very slow pace the movers worked. They complained about the heat, the hills, and smoked every chance they got. They declined to move certain items like a potted palm tree and were overall not very accommodating. I would never use this company again. read more

We used them this past December & I was dismayed to see the 1 bad one review. No business is perfect so please consider that & the rest of the reviews before making your decision. Rittenhouse was recommended by the mgmt company of the complex we moved into Ernie returns calls promptly, was on time for our appt. Took a minimal amount of time, explained everything clearly & gave a very competitive price. 2x the complex we moved into pushed back the availability date just a few days before the planned move date but both times Ernie was able to accommodate w/o any grumblings(& this included moving appliances we would longer needed to a relative's house the same day). The day of the move it was a steady cold rain. We lived on a cramped 1-way street so when they arrived they weren't able to park across our driveway but 1 of the workers started knocking on doors & convinced 1 of our neighbors to move their car into another space so that was a relief. They cover EVERYTHING including boxing every mattress & the only bit of moisture I saw was on the outside of 1 of the boxes. I asked them to take several bags of stuff not originally discussed, they took apart & put back together a crumbling old bed frame. All the workers polite & made us feel at ease. The move was within the time frame they gave & there was no additional charge for the extra bags of stuff they brought over. Move completed within the given time frame & since we moved there we have seen their trucks(they have 2 teams) moving other tenants in at least 25x so you know they do a good job almost every time. read more

We hired Rittenhouse based on a friends' recommendation after being very disappointed with the movers who unpacked our uHaul truck with our last move. Rittenhouse was reliable, strong and extremely professional! I only wish we found them two moves ago. Every single piece of furniture was expertly wrapped and protected as as if it were a delicate crystal vase. The workers were all strong enough to handle even the heaviest of furniture. No damages - whatsoever - to our belongings or to the dwellings. We will definitely use them again and recommend to all friends & family. read more

Horrible experience, heard great reviews so hired them for a move in January 2016. They showed up late and then one worker had to be escorted out and we had to wait on a new worker to arrive because he was so intoxicated. The man hit on me, was extremely inappropriate, and made us feel so uncomfortable. We were later told he had alcohol poisoning, but he was there best guy for 20 years! Such an unprofessional business! Everything got to us thankfully but draws don't line up right, and stuff isn't in the same quality we left it..would never hire such an unprofessional company like Rittenhouse ever again! 3/3/17 Rittenhouse Moving was terrific! Ernie worked with me and did the move when it was convenient for me. The guys were fast, on time, professional, wrapped everything,were kind and quite humorous. I was even charged less than the estimate because it took less time than expected. They were so helpful on both ends of the move. There were 3 guys and they had to go up an elevator with all the furniture. It was an hour drive to the destination.They even moved a heavy dresser that I forgot to list in the items.They were clean and neat and made the move very easy and without stress. I have to say that it was a wonderful experience having these guys move us. From start to finish it was a stress free experience. Ernie estimated the job far below what other movers quoted us and in the end it cost even less than he quoted. The movers were calm and professional and put us at ease from the beginning. I recommend them without hesitation. They even managed to convince us to move a rather large ficus plant that we were going to put out at the curb and it is now thriving in our new home. Followup was great too. A handle on a drawer was damaged (it might have been damaged before they got to work) and they insisted on replacing it. A week after we arrived in our new home we got an email asking us to choose the replacement part and 3 days after that it arrived in the mail. read more

WORST MOVING COMPANY EVER!!! The owner admitted that I didn't get "the best crew". They took a ridiculously long time to move my 1 bedroom apartment and kept complaining about each other. The owner was supposed to send wardrobe boxes, but he didn't. He told me to go to a local storage facility and buy them. and when I got frustrated about it he YELLED at me and threated to not move me. I wasn't going to leave three strangers alone in my apartment while I rode around trying to find wardrobe boxes! He actually told his workers to take the stuff off the truck! They damaged my furniture (dented my dryer, holes in my couch), stole beer out of my refrigerator and left stuff on the truck that had to be redelivered several days later. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this company!!! read more
