The margarita was very good and guacamole decent. You do have to pay extra for the chips and salsa which a common theme around San Antonio I did order it and the salsa was spicy but good. I try to avoid most of the restaurants on the River as they tend to be too touristy and low quality, but we went here as a group and I was pleasantly surprised! It was hot and we opted to sit outside, but it was not too bad with the fans. Service was a bit slow at first, but we eventually put our drink orders in and ordered appetizers. The drinks came fairly quickly, followed by the appetizers. I was blown away with the Tableside Guacamole! Chunky and delicious! The Queso Dip was a real winner as well. The tortilla chips didn't impress me, they were from a bag, but still crispy. For my main, I had enchiladas, they were a bit meh, but I was happy with the appetizers, so I got over it. We used to frequent here often when we came in April for "Fiesta", when my daughter had club volleyball games in SA & attended UTSA...It's been about 10 years. We came back because we bright my granddaughter to Sea World/Aquatica. The food was excellent!! The mangonada margarita was delicious. I had the Rita's original enchiladas with rice & black beans. Service was abysmal. We arrived at 630 pm on a Sunday night and it was not very crowded. Sat inside mainly for the ac. Server introduced himself after five mins and took drink orders then disappeared... I could go on a long time about the bad service... Suffice it was bad. My wife's margarita was the std house and was ok. Chips and salsa was good. My wife and I ordered chicken fajitas for two, and while there was plenty of chicken, there were almost no onions, peppers etc. the rice (see photo) was actually dried out. My daughter ordered vegetarian enchiladas were served cold. The filling was only partially cooked (squash, peppers and carrots) and there was no sauce. This is a great place on the riverwalk to eat. The food was great and fresh. We ate outside which is a great view of the river and the people which is culture in and of itself. Our server Preston was wonderful, friendly. and informative as wellas attentive. The riverwalk can be very congested at times but it is normal for especially on the weekends. I ate at the bar here by myself, and it's a really pleasant, casual and busy Mexican restaurant. It's located right on the Riverwalk. After I sat at the bar, the server told me that I have to order right away because the kitchen was closing. At first, I thought he was a bit annoyed with me and I ordered right away (in a flash) what I thought was the easiest thing on the menu, which was a plain cheese quesadilla. After he brought the quesadilla, he became so nice, friendly and polite and refilled my Diet Coke as much as I wanted; he even gave me one to go. The quesadilla was large, fresh and really delicious. It was just perfect with some of their famous home made guacamole. All in all this is a great choice if you want some typical Southwestern style Mexican food and also if you have a large group, because it's really easy as they have so many big tables. read more

We stumbled across this place while strolling the Riverwalk trying to find something still open at 10pm. We opted to sit inside, where the decor was bright & lively. They have vegetarian and gluten free menus available. We received exceptional service! Our waitress, Jade, was absolutely amazing! She was so kind and attentive. Great location with mediocre food and service. My wife and I both became very ill after eating at Rita's. The dish we shared in common was the Table side guacamole. Our waitress Jade was a true salesperson. My wife wanted a $7 domestic beer but Jade kept pointing out the more expensive $19 keep the glass beer. We told her we did not want that item and asked which beers qualified under the $7 price. Jade pointed out Corona. We are not so familiar with beers so again pointing to the $7 dollar beer Jade said it was $7 dollars so we ordered it. Jade had strongly pushed the $27 dollar margaritas but we told her that was expensive and we were not interested in it or the $19 dollar keep the glass beer. When we got our bill we were charged for the $19 dollar beer. We told Jade that we had emphasized and physically pointed out on the menu that we wanted the $7 beer, but she lied and said we did not do so. She then said we had consumed the beer so we had to pay for it. To avoid ruining our evening further I paid the bill and left. Against my normal habit of tipping well for good service I did not tip Jade because she was dishonest. If she had admitted her error I would have been willing to tip my usual 20% but the response from Jade precluded such on my part. I would advise anyone dining there with Jade as their waitress to record a verification of what you ordered or else be prepared for errors on your bill. We will never dine at Rita's on the River again when we return to San Antonio. read more

Honestly, I don't understand the low rating! This place was great. Service was good, food was great! Really enjoyed my pork street tacos. Fairly spicy but had great flavor and had a generous portion of meat. The tortilla was also WAY better than I anticipated, although it also fell apart in my hands and I was practically eating from my palms by the end lol. Really good bang for your buck considering there were 4 big tacos! We were seated outside with a view of the river, fun to people watch. Highly recommend their pork tacos. We had been walking around the Riverwalk area for a couple of hours and wanted to get in somewhere to get some AC and cool down. We chose to sit at the bar which is very limited inside for seating but we were able to snag a couple of chairs We stuck with frozen drinks and I got the frozen sangria, which is basically sangria with frozen margarita in it. It was good very refreshing on a hot day. My husband got the frozen mango margarita and said it was really good. I did try it and I could definitely tell they use a little bit of peach purée because it was a little bit thicker. Both were good and serve the purpose. My party of 5 was blown away yesterday. Absolute best Tex Mex of our trip. As a group, we enjoyed the table-side fresh guac, two types of enchiladas, chalupas, quesadilla and fish tacos. The tortillas for the fish tacos were thick and yummy. The beans were a favorite. So flavorful and smokey! We had special Rita's, mule, beers to go. To begin with, our waiter tried to help the situation so I give him props. Otherwise, I was not just disappointed but grossed out with the restaurant. We asked our kids what they wanted and they asked for Mexican food. Since we were on vacation, we went to the Riverwalk. We wrongly assumed this place had good food. We were wrong. To begin with, we had to pay for chips and salsa and then we were given store bought chips. The rice and beans were awful. My kids didn't eat them. My Southwest Salad had spring mix and a piece of grilled chicken...that's it! To finish off our dinner, the condensation from the AC was falling all over my kids and their food. We told the waiter and he went to get the manager. He wouldn't come out. He said to move tables. My daughter was so grossed out she didn't eat her food. I now know that the only reason this place is open is because of their great location. Otherwise, the food is awful and it is unsanitary. We paid the full bill, tipped the waiter, and left. Came here twice when I was recently in San Antonio for a conference. Service was fast. The first night I tried the chapulas and they were good. I tried the pork tacos the second night. Rita's on the River We stopped by Rita's on the River after our courthouse wedding, and while the food was a bit of a letdown, the service truly made the experience memorable. To start with the food: my fiancé ordered the enchiladas verdes. Our waitress did warn us that it's a very spicy dish and that it often gets sent back -- and she wasn't kidding. It was extremely spicy , so definitely something to be aware of in case your server doesn't mention it. I ordered the street tacos, but the tortillas were more like a pita or naan-style bread rather than traditional corn or flour tortillas, which really threw off the dish for me. Overall, the food felt more like "tourist/hipster" Mexican food rather than traditional Mexican cuisine. Nothing terrible, just not anything special, especially for the price and location. That said, the piña colada was actually pretty good, and the drinks in general were enjoyable. There wasn't much outdoor seating directly on the river, but the heaters outside were a nice touch and made it comfortable. What really stood out -- and the reason we'd consider coming back -- was the service. Our waitress, Jazzy, was absolutely wonderful and made the night feel special. The bartender even personally brought our drinks to the table, and the manager stopped by to congratulate us on our marriage, which meant a lot to us. If we return, it would be for drinks and the friendly, attentive staff -- not necessarily the food. Rita's has a great team, and they truly made our post-wedding stop feel warm and welcoming. - I did peep at the table next to us who ordered the fajitas which looked and smelled AMAZINGGG and the the guacamole, which was made fresh at their table- it looked really yummy! We had order the queso dip- which didn't come out till after our entree which was odd. Jazzy (our waitress) did let us know there was a "hold" on the queso. Once it came out- it was a bit underwhelming taste wise. The chips didn't taste fresh. I am personally use to a freshly made tortilla chips- that are usually still warm. These ones tasted their old or store bought, and the they were cold. But I am thinking maybe we just ordered the wrong stuff! Where do I start. Wifey wanted some Mexican cuisine and we stumbled upon Rita's on the Riverwalk. We sat down promptly on the inside because it is hot as hell here in San Antonio. Richard greeted us with a great big smile and the eagerness to serve. He got us some water's to start with while we looked over the menu. He recommended the el jefe with strawberry. Great recommendation. My wife who doesn't even like tequila very much liked this drink. I got the shrimp tacos. Packed full of flavor and just great. Def 8.9 out of 10. Wifey got chicken fajitas and loved them. 8.5 out of ten. But my service from Richard was a 20 out of 10. He was great. If you happen to stumble across this place while roaming the river walk. We got seated relatively quickly for Saturday night at 7:30pm on the River Walk. But then the service was pretty slow. The drinks took forever and were very hit and miss. Their signature frozen margaritas were the most crowd pleasing, but that's frozen sugar with a little alcohol and lots of artificial flavors. The El Jefe on the rocks was expensive and terrible. Bourbon on the rocks included a $4 up-charge for the ice. Ouch. The food was pretty good, but all of it was pretty spicy. Luckily, the chicken fajitas I got were not spicy. The chicken was really good and not overcooked so still juicy. The onions and peppers were nicely seasoned and cooked as well, which is hard on skillets. The pork tacos were too spicy for my friend to eat, which is also hard! Everyone else was somewhat satisfied with their food but nobody else was impressed. The homemade flour and corn tortillas were the highlight of the meal. It's a River Walk restaurant, so it's really about the location and you only get what you come for. read more

We ate at Rita's while staying over in San Antonio on the way to and from the Texas coast. On the way down I had the El Jefe margarita, which was outstanding. On the way back we shared the original beef enchiladas. Excellent. Great service from the same waiter too. The Riverwalk can seem like Six Flags sometimes but Rita's is the real deal.
