Finally was able to stop here on the way home from Hunter mountain and officially found our new go to spot for aprés ski. There is a huge parking lot located behind the brewery/restaurant with ample parking. We were seated immediately on a Saturday evening and brought menus and drinks. We ordered a few appetizers to start and if we were still hungry we were planning to order more. The chicken wings here are an absolute must. The chicken is tender and moist with a crisp exterior. The Cajun sauce was similar to buffalo but packed a better kick. We also ordered the Bavarian soft pretzels and garlic knots. The garlic knots were so light and fluffy and the marinara sauce was well seasoned and extra garlicky in flavor which we both enjoyed. The Bavarian pretzels were so good on their own they didn't even need the beer cheese or mustard dipping sauce. We were stuffed and did not have room for any more food. Definitely a new staple of mine! Rip is such a great space for lunch, dinner, or inbetween drinks whether after being on the mountain or during the week. So lively with easy dining and fast service. We got the blincess and one of their special chicken cutlet sandwiches with burrata, vodka sauce, prosciutto, pesto and it was absolutely delicious! Still thinking about that sandwich to this day. Quick weekend trip to upstate to hike Kaaterskill Falls, Rip Van Winkle Brewery is a sweet surprise nearby! The place was packed on a Saturday night, and after having the food, I understood why. I ordered the arugula salad, Detroit style pizza (pepperoni), cider and wings to go. It was a lot of food! I had full intention of getting the pretzel which I heard is one of the best things here. My favorite was the pizza; I've never had Detroit style pizza and theirs did not disappoint!! The vibe was fun and down to earth and the servers were prompt and attentive. This place was a small place near Catskills so we decided to come and try it out. The pizza was better than I expected. The classic margherita pizza was much better than the special one, but loved the cheese pull on these choices. The inside was nice and rustic and the staff was great in explaining things to us lot of rowdy boys (kidding, we were pretty much the most boring table there). I liked that they had the pitcher offer for beer so we tried it out to share for the table. Also loved how they left the stand with the pizza so we didn't have to make room on the table. We stopped in late afternoon for an early supper/snack. We buy the RVW beer often when upstate, and it had been on our list for a while. The space feels more like a restaurant than brewery. There is an extensive food menu -with many Italian inspired dishes (apparently the family has roots in Italy). I tried the Summit - a nice nutty brown ale. And Hubs tried their Wit (mine was better). Hubs ordered a pizza pie with pancetta and arugula and I had their littleneck clams cooked with beer, bacon and tomatoes. My clams were so delicious, perfectly briny and juicy. The broth was so flavorful that i basically finished it all. The thin crust pizza was top notch - generous toppings and good flavor. I would definitely come again. For around 25 years, I've been eating Angela's pizza. I don't know when it happened, but I just looked around and: 1. Angela's became a brewpub called Rip Van Winkle. 2. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry. My mom lives down the street, and Rip Van Winkle is always a good option. I've eaten in dozens of times, and taken out far, far more. They are a local institution, and it's not surprising that they are quite busy on Fridays and Saturdays, with a lot of folks coming to just pick up beer to go (it's quality stuff). I can report that the pizza is still the same, and still good. It's not the thin crust pie that I usually favor back in Brooklyn, but just about the best version of upstate pizza. Throw pepperoni and mushrooms (real, not canned which is always a plus) on top, and it'll satisfy that craving you're having. The menu also boasts just about everything you'd want in terms of bar food (wings, burgers, fried stuff), plus a lot of Italian favorites (chicken parm, lasagna, panini, meatballs). It's all solid, and my go-tos are usually the penne alla vodka, the arugula salad, and the Salmon Candita (banging). My mom loves the ultra garlicky broccoli rabe too, so that's often coming on the side. Portions are big, the food is fresh, prepared by the family, and served by an army of local kids. There's something for everyone. Beware though, like just about any other restaurant food, it's going to taste better in-house. We dine in when we can (the place has been updated nicely, and it's super welcoming with a view of the beer tanks from the dining room), but sometimes it's just easier to take it home. Last time we took food out, the wings were less than crisp and everything was all smushed against the sides of the takeout boxes. Their blue cheese was exactly what I was looking for with the crumbles throughout. And they always have good beer on tap. What a great experience. We hostess was super sweet and accommodating from the moment we walked inside. We had been driving home all day from Canada and were super hungry. Our server Kierstin was exceptional. My daughter and I sat at a table waiting for friends but ate while we waited and she was extremely attentive, despite the lunch rush and them being nearly full. She was quick with refills and let me taste the beer I wanted before ordering a glass. When our friends got there later on she pushed tables together for us and made sure we were taken care of. We had leftover pizza and she boxed it up for us and put it in the back by the oven to get out of our way and keep warm. 10/10 an amazing server. Not to mention the food was amazing. She estimated 20 minutes and when I walked in to pick up it was waiting for me. The bar and restaurant seating area were all packed and they still were able to get our order out in the estimated time. The rabe was over cooked and tin tasting, seems canned. The "crumbled sausage" seemed like it was prepped for the pizza, and tossed in at last second, disappointed and let staff know why I didn't eat any of it. No comment and I was still charged. Why not try again a month later, we all have bad nights. Well the lasagna I ordered albeit served in blazing hot skillet was dead cold in middle, really disappointing. Judging by what other reviews say, for me it seems like the standards aren't there. At the prices charged the cooking standards should be in place. read more

I thought this place was perfect after snowboarding. Small family owned place where the main woman who ran it, Angela, had been running an Italian restaurant for 40 years. The son took over and turned it into a great brewery. He even had a craft beer named after his mother and he let me try it on the house (best described as blend of a stout and barley wine). Very cool place that is a bit further off the interstate than I initially thought, but I am super glad I found it. The atmosphere really surprised me. It was a very well put together (and much lager) than I expected. They were super busy on a Saturday night. I started with the Rip Van Wit. This was a solid Hefeweizen, and yes I did pick up a 4-pack to take home with me. We started with the soft pretzel. The beer cheese dipping sauce was excellent and the mustard sauce was good too (very strong horseradish). The pretzel was excellent. Just the right size for two people. I got the buttermilk chicken sandwich and opted for the side salad since the server said the fries were not hand-cut. The sandwich was great. The bun was soft, the sauce had just a bit of kick to it and the chicken was flavorful. My dad got the French Onion Soup, which he said was very good. There was a mass amount of cheese that came with it (about 1/4 thick). He ended up not being able to eat all the cheese because there was just so much. Our waitress was nice and the food was great. We ordered the 12 inch traditional pizza, garlic knots (it came with 10!!), and a side of penne alla vodka. Everything was great! The side of pasta was huge and definitely more than enough for me. So that's a nice trick to save a little money. The order of knots was so fresh and huge we could only eat half. And the pizza was so good and crispy. My bf got a flight of beers to sample and he really enjoyed them all. I also got the berry bourbon lemonade and it was so good. To think that I'd not follow the round of golf with a few pints is mere folly - it's just pure boulderdash. Unfortunately Rip Van Winkle G. C. was not cable connected due to an apparent scrape of a discrepancy with the fine conglomerate by the name of Verizon, so the pub area wasn't geared up for such a situation. I was hankering for something greasy, crispy, hot and wonderful with a cold, hoppy happy chaser typicality served in a clear 16oz module and to lay a but of action in the singles matches for the WTC Match Play Championship. And afterwards I wanted to hear stories of witches and ghosts, ghouls and goblins as the Hudson Valley (both upper and lower) has been known to have it's share of things that do more at night than go "bump". I envisioned Rip walking in and bellying up to the bar telling a tale about that most pestilent little piece of field iof his, the patrimonial estate, and it's inevitable whittling away, acre by acre, yet with a kind smile as Rip maintained his happy and well oiled disposition. Idle and careless? --- perhaps, but certainly a fellow that I'd enjoy having a Belgian wheat beer with, a tavern companion if you will. On this day I had Kayla serving and pouring so a ran my eyes across the top with little patience due to a whistle that needed immediate wetting, to read much further in and down. Mountain House Helles was first, a golden colored hoppy German brew with a light refined finish. Second was the Rip Van Wit - a sexy Belgian unfiltered wheat beer with hints of tarragon and orange peel. Third - The Winkle Lager a bit malty for a German pilsner, the Zuper Zazzer hops giving off a pleasantly bitter finish. All brewhahas came in at $6.00 or less! Honey Habanero wings were too attractive to read to pass up and I always tend to try a new wingy flavor but nothing with fish oil, I find it putrid and just plain weird. After a crisping up, both wings and legs has no bone bleeding (the purplish hue in the bone) showcasing the quality and I so believe I received fourteen -- for $12.00. I didn't get the habanero heat,the one my internist keeps telling to to "cease and desist from consuming" but a pleasant app to start with. Finishing with a garlic white cheese pizza whose name is currently evading me, pizza oven to my right with full court activity of new doughs going in, pretty colored topped ones coming out, you could just float away upon the bubbly ingredient vapor trails that followed in their wake. read more

I always like the food and atmosphere here. The pizza is excellent. Very family friendly. My gripe is the beer; its not that great. I basically only drink Hazy NEIPAs because its my favorite style ever. There are so many great Hazy IPAs being made around here now adays. The kaaterskill krush is not on par with other NEIPAs around here. It has an extremely bitter/sour finish that is a put off. I wish they would adjust this recipe because if citra is the primary hop, this beer should be amazing. That being said, I am a return customer and will continue to go because everything else is great. But if you are a brewery in NY your hazy should be top notch. read more

It's more common to see a brewery add food, here I understand we've got a pizzeria that added its own beer. Bonus points for being open on a Tuesday when so many other breweries in the Hudson Valley are closed on Tuesday. My first visit here, lunch, was relaxing, enjoyable, and satisfying. Most of the furniture in the dining room is an appealing set of black-and-tan furniture, but the older rustic yellow table on the side was just as comfortable, if not more, plus a window view. Food and drink here are reasonably priced. Today's beer list was unusual because they had few, if any, IPA's, but I'm not an IPA person, so their selection of dark beers was perfect for me. Flights are available too, 5 selections for $11. I will agree with a few reviews implying the beers are a bit weaker, based mostly on my lack of a buzz I had after 2 beers. But I definitely enjoyed them and would certainly order them again. I decided to rationalize I was being healthy by ordering a large house salad with grilled chicken to go with my beers. I'm told the pizza and burgers are very good here too, and I don't doubt that, so perhaps next visit. We were well taken care of by our waitress, who rolled with our missteps in ordering, and our comments along the way.
