Weather enjoying a Carne Asada burrito at one of the fast food stands that ends in -erto's, enjoying a meal at long, gone places like Acapulco, or bellying up to some swanky new wave fusion place with rainbow colored tortilla chips and "salsa flights," I've tried them all. So when I say that El Torito bar and Grill is a good Mexican food restaurant, that should mean something. Moreover, is someone who has visited 49 of the 50 states by car, with a family of five in tow, we've definitely stopped at our fair share of Mexican food restaurants... Some of them were amazing, and some of them were no Bueno. But this place is an honest to goodness, authentic Mexican food restaurant. Your first clue: the rice and beans. I know, they come with everything... But if you don't know how to make real rice and beans, the rest of it really doesn't matter. This place knows what's up. The burritos, Carne Asada, fajitas, combination plates with things like enchiladas and chile rellenos-- everything here is delicious. Modestly priced, but for the only game in town place, it's a pretty good deal at 20 or 30 bucks a head. Service has always been very good, and the shot of tequila when they bring the bill out is always a nice touch, especially as you're about to include the propina. :) The vibe inside is laid-back, with casual visitors, families, and groups like us... People visiting from out of town who are here to enjoy some local fishing, and the welcoming comfort of local business. Just a few steps from our favorite hotel in town, we will always plan to enjoy at least one evening meal here together when we visit Omak.

We had enchiladas and fajitas - the enchiladas came on a big plate with refried beans, traditional orange rice, lots of sauce with cheese, and shredded lettuce - the chicken enchiladas were fine, the rest standard fare for that kind of Mexican restaurant. The fajitas were a concession to their anglo customers, and they were pretty standard too. In both cases, more than either of us could easily finish. I liked the restaurant, though I'm not terribly fond of this kind of Mexican food (the refried beans, traditional orange rice, lots of sauce with cheese, and shredded lettuce are the stock in trade of these kinds of places). The decor was homey and fun and right out of the 1950s. This also seems to be a much-loved restaurant in Brewster, drawing people from nearby towns like Pateros.

That said, it's pretty clear that everything served is frozen. We ordered a chicken strip basket, a kids meal, and a bacon burger. The chicken strips weren't great, and the burgers were clearly made from frozen patties. Honestly, the fries and BBQ sauce were the only things we really enjoyed. I also paid $0.70 for a side of ranch, which was disappointing--it looked curdled and had more of a blue cheese texture than ranch. Another thing to note: the menu that's been posted in some of the older reviews is outdated--by about two years. Prices for most items are around $2 more than what those photos show, so keep that in mind when budgeting your visit. Lastly, I'd highly recommend that the owners update their menu signage. It's confusing and not very user-friendly. For example, there's no clear indication of which meals include fries and which don't--it feels random. In short: friendly staff and local charm, but the food and menu organization could use some serious attention.
