Pastry heaven
Christina L.

Not sure how I missed reviewing my favorite childhood coffee shop. They are a carb fiend's heaven. They offer an assortment of Latin American pastries, empanadas, finger sandwiches and even pasta in the freezer case. Staff is always friendly and fast. This is a very small space with about 3 tables so don't count on eating in since they are usually packed. Tip: If you decide to visit you may want to visit one of the other restaurants on the block that serve amazing entraña (skirt steak) sandwiches with chimichurri sauce. Also, bring the cash! Not all places take credit.

Dulce de leche roll and small mini cakes

I live a block from this bakery and I never knew this place existed. I must have walked by a million times, but never have I pressed my face against the glass to peer in and see what is on the other side. Where was my curiosity as a child? Why did I not ask my parents if I can have some cake? I guess I was just too afraid to venture out of the Chinese bakeries. So when my friend told me about this bakery, I ran out the door to try it out. This place is legit. I fulfilled parts of my childhood by peering through the glass and happily thinking about which cakes I want. If I could, I would gladly press my face up against the glass, but I didn't want to ruin my makeup and make a fool of myself. Rio de la Plata has a ton of mini cakes and cookies for you to select from. Each one is $0.70, or you can buy it by the pound. It was definitely difficult to choose from all the deliciousness. After half an hour of deliberating, my sis and I picked out 5. My favorite was this Neapolitan type pastry with layers of dulce de leche. It was milky, and buttery and it satisfied my tastebuds. The alfajor I was not a big fan of. The alfajor is 2 cookies sandwiched between dulce de leche. I felt that the cookies were too dry for me. The other mini cakes we had were pretty good and all of them had the signature dulce de leche, but there are cakes and cookies without it. We also purchased a dulce de leche roll cake. It was ok. It was way too sweet, and seemed to be soaked in syrup. The cake itself was a little bit dry, and the syrup didn't help it much. I will definitely come back and try some more cakes. Even though the cakes may be too sweet for one's taste buds, the dulce de leche is simply too good to pass on. Perfectly sweet and milky. My friend raved about the medialuna which is this croissant thing filled with dulce. I will have to try that the next time my sweet tooth needs to be satisfied. We decided to stop by since we wanted to give something around here a try…read more We came in & were seated right away, drinks Passion fruit & Mango shakes w milk instead of water, very good but a bit filling. Chorizo for appetizer great tasting but u may not need it they start u off w some warm bread & cheese, salami app very good depending on how hungry u are I'd say u can skip the appetizer. Main dishes Milanesa à la napolitana this was good, way too many onions but good comes with rice & beans. I had the Pechuga de pollo la provenzal, yumm this was delicious the sauce is so tasty, I got it w tostones great since dipping into the sauce. Next time, Ice tea & Sprite for drinks not bad, no apps since they start u off w that bread. I had the Meat special #4 , This comes with 2 pieces of steak & chorizo , got it w tostones the meat was very flavorful, cooked just right , comes w a chimichurri sauce so good. We also had the Pollo Provenzal again, man that sauce is amazing got it w fried yuca, it was very good. This place is a one stop shop, butcher style Meats for sale, some Argentinian desserts, candy & merchandise they seem to have a little bit of everything. Good size location, decent decor & service. Prices are seasonable since they do give u a good portion size. Good neighborhood spot, this place was a good find & chances are we will continue to visit from time to time.

After more than 25 years of being customers and spending hundreds of dollars per visit, we were…read moreessentially told we had stayed too long after finishing our meal. That was enough for us to decide we will not be returning. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 25 years. The food has generally been good, which is why my family continued returning and recommending it to others. Our history with the restaurant has not been without issues. Years ago, we stopped coming after a Mother's Day incident involving my grandmother. We had been seated in the upstairs dining room (when it was still open), only to later be told by the owner that we did not have a reservation and that we had to leave. After several years, we decided to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and eventually started coming back again. Unfortunately, today confirmed that the earlier incident was not simply bad luck. I was dining with my parents. We ordered two steaks, two appetizers, three sides, a bottle of wine and later a second bottle (of which we only drank half), along with four after-dinner drinks, cappuccino, and dessert. It was clearly a very busy day, and service was slower than usual. Because of the restaurant's pace, our meal ended up lasting a little over three hours. We were patient the entire time and never complained. After we finished eating and were simply finishing our drinks, the owner, Marcelo, approached our table and remarked that we had been there for three hours and were now only drinking alcohol, indirectly suggesting that his establishment was not a bar but a place for dining. Considering that we had just spent several hundred dollars and have been customers for decades, the comment was unnecessary and unprofessional. We immediately asked for the check and left. For context, I am a physician and understand the pressures of demanding work environments. However, professionalism and respect toward customers should always come first. Over the years, my family has typically spent between $300 and $500 per visit here. Unfortunately, after this experience, this will be the last time we come. There are many excellent Argentinian and Uruguayan steakhouses where customers are treated with appreciation and respect, and that is where we will be going moving forward.

This place has been on my list and tonight I finally got to check it off. Wow. What a meal!…read more A very unassuming place right off the highway but once you walk in it's a very cozy restaurant. Staff was super friendly and our waitress Mel, was very nice in explaining the menu. It was an Extensive menu and of course your wide array of meats! The free bread that comes to table warmed was perfect. We also got a small place of a few slices of meat with cheese which was delicious. Nice complimentary touch. I ordered the skirt steak and a side of garlic potatoes. With an Inca cola! Before anything, a nice hefty does of chimichurri was left on our table. Excitement is an understatement. The steak came out and the smell of the char with it being perfectly seasoned was hypnotic. It looked and was super juicy. You don't even need the chimichurri! The garlic potatoes were heavy on the garlic of course and it was great. I just wished it was a bit more on the plate. Very very satisfying meal that does not break the bank. I definitely would recommend checking this place out. I'll be back!

Excellent shrimp in garlic as well. I went to this Argentine spot a couple of days ago with 6 others, having previously been to their long-running Corona location a good while ago. This new location, by comparison, has only been open for a few months. The spot is casual, and the staff is friendly. Before the rest arrived, a few people ordered drinks, including some Mexican beers and, for me, a Quilmes. As with their other location, they gave us some toasted bread and sausages to begin with, which were tasty. There was a nice fragrant chimichurri sauce on the table. We started with two appetizers. The better app was an obligatory one for Argentine parilladas, Provoleta, or Provolone a la Parrilla, listed as grilled provolone in oregano sauce for $11.90. There were also some olives and some yellow pickled peppers, and it was standard and tasty, with a mild oregano flavor. The other one was the $12.90 Ensalada de Aguacate, or in other words, an avocado salad, with some red wine vinegar, olive oil, and Italian dressing on the side. There was plenty of very good quality avocado in there, but the salad otherwise was boring, with mostly lettuce along with some sliced tomatoes, onions, and some cucumber. The main dishes, of course, consisted of two of their parillada, a mixed grill platter, with both of them being ordered medium rare. The first one was their standard Parillada Para Dos o Tres Personas with skirt steak, short rib, sweetbread, tripe, kidney, and two sausages; black and Argentine. For the 2/3 person portion, it was $65.90, and it came with two sides. The Skirt Steak/Entraña on both this and the other mixed platter was wonderful, being tender and juicy with plenty of beef flavor. The Short Ribs/Costillas were flavorful, though a tad fatty. In terms of the achuras, or offal, my favorite of the bunch was the Sweetbreads/Mollejas, being perfectly cooked with a soft texture. I also loved the Tripe/Tripa, which more resembled intestines, which were clearly cleaned very well, as they lacked any gamey flavor. The texture otherwise was nice, and this was most of the others' favorite offal. The Kidney/Riñón was most of the other people's least favorite, with the strongest flavor, but as someone who likes liver, I still enjoyed it to an extent. In terms of sausages, the Argentine Sausage/Chorizo had a mild flavor, and the Morcilla/black sausage was excellent with a snappy casing and a very mild iron flavor. Compared to last time, this was even better. The more expensive of the mixed grills we got was the Parillada Especial Para Dos o Tres Personas, with more skirt steak, along with Flat Steak, flat rib, short rib, shell steak, and sirloin steak. This was $80.90 with 2 sides, and was also excellent. My least favorite, as before, was the short ribs, with the rest of the steaks having a mix of textures, with my probable favorites being the Flat/Vacio and the Sirloin/Cuadril. It was a ton of perfectly cooked meat, but it felt a bit boring by comparison this time, with the offal being so good on the other platter, compared to the other location. Our only other main dish was the $25.90 Camarones al Ajillo, or shrimp sauteed in garlic sauce, which was also served with one side. For a steak place, the shrimp here were better than most steakhouses, being plump and juicy. The delicious garlic sauce paired wonderfully and was especially good with the various sides. This was an expected hit and a necessary bite between all the various meats. For the free sides, we got two of the Plátanos Maduros, along with Arroz con Habichuelas, Ensalada Rusa, and Papas a la Provencal. Our favorites were the sweet plantains and the rice, especially with the meat juices or garlic sauce added. The Russian potato salad reminded me of a thicker version of salad Olivier, with plenty of mayo. The papas were the plainest, and I presume the Papas Frita/French Fries were better, but we chose not to order them. As we were already very full with a bit of leftovers, the postres/dessert was Panqueques Con Dulce De Leche for $9.90. These consist of crepes filled with milk caramel, and they were rich and tasty. It was great to share, and it was a good ending to the meal. We gave a generous tip, got leftovers, and still spent around $38 a person for some excellent food. Would recommend heavily, just like their other location. Rounding up to 5, or rather cinco estrellas.

We got lucky with a spot a couple blocks away, but I would recommend carpooling or taking public transit. We had a reservation, since we were a big group. It wasn't too crowded when we got there on a Friday evening, but it definitely got more crowded later on. We were seated in the back, which was great for us to eat and chill. The complimentary bread, butter and chimichurri was fantastic. They were so good, that we got a couple more baskets of bread. The service was friendly and attentive. The Grilled Provolone with Prosciutto was perfectly cheesy and salty, which went great on the complimentary bread. Definitely eat this hot. The Calf Tongue had great texture, sliced at a nice thickness. Flavor-wise it was garlic heavy, so make sure you like garlic! The Shrimp and Avocado Salad (Small) was fresh with a great balance of ingredients. The small was more than enough to go around, so if you're a smaller group, I'd stick to the small. The Cazuela De Mondongo was flavorful with tender meat. I only had a bite, but the general consensus was the same. It comes with rice, so make sure to soak up all that stew! We got the Argentinian Grill, which served 3-4 people (we got x2, which meant 4 total sides): -Skirt Steak: was the best cut overall. It was well cooked at medium rare -Sweet Bread: I hadn't had this before and I enjoyed the texture and flavor. It is very tender. -Short Ribs: was too chewy, as I couldn't bite through it. Maybe it got a bit overcooked, since it was sitting at the bottom of the pile of meats. -Flank Steak: was a bit overdone. I added some chimichurri and onions for more flavor. -Blood Sausage: nice crumbly texture. The flavor is not too strong. -Sausage: decent snap, on the salty side, but still tasty -French Fires Provencal: perfectly crispy. Had a good amount of parsley, but could use more garlic (though there was so much garlic elsewhere, we didn't really need more) -Sauteed Onions: went well with the meats, as it added extra flavor -Sauteed Spinach: typical sauteed spinach -Sauteed Broccoli: typical sauteed broccoli Although the grill combo is good to try out the meats, it's better to pick and choose the meats you actually enjoyed. It definitely feeds 4 people (if you get a couple appetizers, feeds 3 otherwise). We were all full and had a little leftovers. I also tried a sip of the Red Sangria, and it was good. Mellow in flavor, which I enjoyed. Overall, a cozy spot for some Argentinian food if you're in the area.

Our group of 8 walked in a cold winter night, to a warm wood adorned interior with dim lighting making for a cozy intimate feel putting me right at ease setting me up for a great night. We started with a pitcher of Sangria - they make an excellent version as they brought out fresh crusty bread, chimichurri and butter. Grilled Provolone with prosciutto made an awesome cheese pull and was fantastic on their bread. The Calf Tongue had a good texture and marinated with olive oil, vinegar and garlic heavy. The shrimp and avocado salad was packed with fresh delicious ingredients. For the main event it is grilled meats all the way. The Argentinian Grill gives a nice sampling - we ordered 2 so were able to get 4 sides - French Fries Provenzal, Sauteed Spinach, Broccoli and Onions. The skirt steak is the standout and now that I tried a sampling I would probably focus on this the next time I am here. I enjoyed the sweet breads and chorizo, but found the Short Ribs a little tough and Blood Sausage is not really my thing. The service was very attentive and friendly making for a fantastic all around experience. I am happy La Fusta exists I hope I never know a time when it no longer does.
