Price-gouging, racist-owned business.
As someone who doesn't like to cook, I buy foods for lunch and dinner from local restaurants and food trucks every day since I moved into the neighborhood a little over a year ago. Therefore, I have dependency and motive to make friends with nearby food sellers, including Stephanie's Bakery which offers more authentic Mexican food than others on the same street. That's solely why I've brought more business to them than anyone else and sadly, I won't be a customer from now on due to what the owner/cashier has done and said today.
In the past 8 months, Chilaquiles with beef from Stephanie's Bakery has been my weekend lunch staple and many other dishes for my weekday's lunch. I've been charged $10 for these dishes consistently until recent weeks when the owner changed the price on me without prior notice, and said, "beef price goes up." I thought, ok, perhaps it's the pandemic. The following day, I stopped by to order a chicken dish and still got charged $12. When I asked for the reason, she didn't bother answering my question and simply rolled her eyes on me. Ever since I'd been paying $12 for everything I ordered until last week when the owner told me the "new price" of $14 and went on to say, "oh, it's because Chilaquiles related dishes cost $14." At that moment, I realized what she is trying to pull and pushed back by strongly demanding her to put up a menu with new prices so that customers would not get confused and know how much of each dish. She nodded her head without saying a word.
I woke up today craving for Chilaquiles so I went to Stephanie's Bakery. I did not see a new price update on the menu. Guess what happened? The owner told me it's $13 this time because the tortillas that came with every dish for free is now a dollar extra! She even forgot the fact that she already started charging me $14 for the same dish last week! I got so angry that I pointed out all her little petty, crafty tricks. Soon after I finished, she said something so out of line that I feel I need to let the world know what kind of person is running this business. She said, "you people don't understand, I can't explain to you." What!? You people? Do you mean Asian people? Since when a customer has to put up with this non-transparent price-gauging nonsense?
I grabbed my food and left and here I am writing about this person.
In addition to her ignorant & racist comment, she almost never throws in a set of spoon and fork and napkins for me as it is their common food takeout practice for customers. Looking at the menu, there's not even a single dish that is listed for more than $12, and yet, she's charging people $13 & $14 on a whim.
I do not recall one time when I see the food grades of Stephanie's Bakery on its front door that says A. It's always either "B" or "grade pending". This should've been a sign that I should not get food from them. Well, now I learn. read more
