Probably the first Cuban restaurant I've ever been to. I was in the area and they have a good review so I decided to give it a try. The waitress doesn't speak English so it was a bit hard to order. They don't have pictures in the menu as well but the food doesn't disappoint. I ordered the daily specials, Fricase the cerdo. It comes with rice, beans, yuco something and toast. Not every restaurant review has to be about a five-star, over-the-top experience. Regular people like to eat regular food, sometime. And regular Cuban people like to eat regular Cuban food. A few years ago, when I was still a member at The Meadows CC in Sarasota, I used to pass this little Cuban restaurant, Rincon Cubano ... on Honore, near Fruitville. I used to stop occasionally for lunch. My love of Cuban food goes way back -- in Tampa and especially on Calle Ocho in Miami. I have not found really good Cuban food since moving to Nokomis and my yearning reached a peak recently. After stopping for lunch a few years ago, we finally made it back to Rincon Cubano for dinner. Rincon Cubano is a family owned and operated restaurant in a small strip center. It has been shined up a bit since my last visit. One side overlooks a semi-open kitchen. The other side has a bar, some high hat tables and a large (unfortunately, mostly unused) music stage. The staff couldn't be nicer and the entire place is spotless. The menu is somewhat limited but still contains some of the traditional Cuban foods that are personal favorites. Of course, the Cuban Sandwich is a featured item and I have had them in the past at lunch. They are excellent. But we were looking for a full dinner on a cold and rainy night. To warm up, I started with a Makers Mark bourbon with just two ice cubes. Candy chose a Cafe con Leche. We then moved to two of the traditional soups: Garbanzo Bean -- This flavorful soup, a standard in both Cuban and Italian cuisine, is a mix of whole chick peas and blended chick peas. The creamy consistency is then enhanced by a small amount of vegetables (carrots, celery, spinach and potato). Caldo Gallego -- This hearty soup originated in the Galician Region of Northwest Spain. It features white (cannellini) beans with pieces of pork, potatoes and leafy greens. It has been adopted in both Cuban and Puerto Rican cooking. For my entree, I chose Vaca Frita - pan-fried shredded beef with sauteed onions and lime. The meal comes with rice, beans and fried sweet plantain. That is too many carbs for me. Instead I had a fresh and very large side salad that I shared with my wife. She chose the appetizer portion of Stuffed Yuca, the starchy root vegetable that was filled with ground meat and lightly fried. The salsa music was playing softly in the background. The beautiful mural of Havana in its heyday was on the wall behind the stage. And the radiant smiles of the staff members warmed the room. And the best part -- the bill, including tax and a generous tip, came to grand total of $50. Rincon Cubano is a hidden gem. When we left, I kicked myself for waiting so long to return for dinner ... and a totally enjoyable evening. read more

Service was probably the best service I've gotten from a restaurant in a while. Ambiance was a cute restaurant we went on Sunday afternoon and it was PACKED. Anyways I was super excited to eat here but I wasn't amazed by the food unfortunately. The beans that came with my meal had no flavor whatsoever. I guess I was expecting Spanish rice and beans and instead the beans could have came out of a can for all I know. The fried yuca I ordered were hit and miss. Very inconsistent with amount of fried to what's actually in there. Salmon was the kicker for me. It WAS cooked properly, when I cut into it with my fork it broke apart accordingly. Yet nothing drives me more insane than when my meal tastes fishy. Again the kicker, some of the salmon was good other parts not so good ‍ boyfriend ordered the special steak they have on Sundays he said his meal was 4 stars but I stand by my 3 star review. read more

Still a very good Cuban sandwich We once again visited Rincon Cubano, "Home of the Cuban Sandwich". And once again I came ready to order their Cuban Grande with extra meat. This substantial sandwich always seems larger than 12 inches. A concession I made to my wife was I would only eat half and bring half home. A sign on the door asks people to be patient, the restaurant experiencing staffing shortages. We certainly understood, so many restaurants facing those same issues. That it took a little longer than it normally should to get our food was ok, and once my sandwich arrived, it was impressive. I liked the crunchy bread. I also found the roast pork particularly noticeable and very good, maybe it was because I got the extra meat. I recommend double meat to get a better bread meat ratio, it isn't a special request but a menu option. Rincon Cubano is a large place with a Latin feel, unobtrusive music playing. Did take out tonight and first time I've been disappointed with this restaurant having eaten here 3 times before. Something has changed for the worse in my opinion. In the past I've always tried the Cubano sandwich which was always good but wanted to try something different tonight. We ordered the Cubano Picadilo and the Cuban steak sandwiches. Lots of bread for both sandwiches but both had very little meat and the steak sandwich was really bare bones with something they called shoestring potatoes. It was comical and I'd recommend avoiding it. No condiments whatsoever with the steak sandwich and the Picadilo maybe had 2 tablespoons of ground meat. I really wish I had taken a photo of each sandwich but I tried being as truthful and descriptive as possible. We won't be revisiting anytime soon. My recommendation: order a Cubano from the Publix Deli and you'll be very happy! read more

This restaurant is conveniently located across the street from Aviva /Benderson nursing home and rehab, and is terrific for takeout. If you are visiting someone at the nursing home, this is the kind of restaurant where you can eat again and again and enjoy their basic offerings. The ropa vieja with shredded beef is flavorful without being spicy, and I enjoyed it with yellow rice and black beans. My companions all had sandwiches of different varieties, and enjoyed them very much, particularly noting the delicious fresh rolls they were made on. Their tip was to get the larger sized sandwich, pay for extra meat, eat half and take the rest to enjoy for your next meal. While practically empty when we were there mid afternoon, the service was very very slow. Tip number two would be to order ahead and do take out. Amazing spot full of Cuban warmth and culture in the middle of Sarasota Florida. A must for Cuban food lovers or first time food enthusiasts. But if you're looking for a mojo-marinated pork roast, ham, (sometimes salami), cheese, and pickles go somewhere else. My friend told me to look this place up when I came to Sarasota. He was adamant that the Cuban sandwiches here would blow my mind. But lamentably, this simple sandwich (which took nearly 40 minutes to make) ruined my trip. I know, you're probably asking yourself what a guy named Gabriel Grimes would know about a Cubano or any hispanic dish at all...But let me tell you my other last names are Angulo Pimentel.
