Williamsburg - South Side, South Williamsburg

Bembe is one of those places. If you know, you know -- and…read moreif you don't, you should fix that immediately. Tuesday nights? Reggaeton goes crazy. The room is moving, the energy is right, and it feels like a real party instead of a playlist on shuffle. Friday nights with the live drums? Different level. That's when Bembe really shows its roots. The drums add this raw, authentic feel that turns the whole night into an experience instead of just a bar stop. Now let's talk drinks -- because this one deserves its own moment: The tequila with the lime dipped in coffee grounds is surprisingly delicious. I wasn't expecting it to work... but it absolutely does. Must-drink. Non-negotiable. This is a place to dance, drink, sweat a little, and leave feeling like you actually went somewhere. Bathroom Review (2 out of 4) Safety - Bouncer presence helps a lot. You feel secure moving back there. Accessibility - Easy enough to get to, no maze or weird hallway journey. Space - Bathrooms are small and tucked way in the back. Gets cramped fast. Privacy - Sinks are outside the bathrooms, which kills the privacy a bit when it's packed.

Delaceiba cookin' up the dope vibes!…read more Came out to see the DJ, Delaceiba, and he did not disappoint! The energies he provided kept the party MOVIN'. I loved that there were congas by the ready for a quick jam sesh! My only gripe was the drinks. My first drink was an "old fashioned" and it had a bunch of raw coarse sugar at the bottom. It actually looked like a Long Island iced tea, so I'm not sure what it was. It was a bit loud, so maybe they misunderstood my order. My second drink seemed accurate, and was just fine. Anyway, I'd definitely hit this spot up again, especially if Delaceiba is in the house. Much much love Bembe!

For my 600th review, I will be writing about my visit to The Rub on my birthday weekend…read more(4/30/2016). The Rub is a monthly hip-hop dance party, that plays old school hip-hop, the kind of music I listened to in high school. It takes place on the last Saturday of every month at the Bell House. It sounded like a great time, so I headed over to the Bell House around 10pm. There was no line around 10pm, so I got in quickly after paying the cheap $10 cover. There's a (non-mandatory) coat check at the door, and the space is split into a smaller bar/lounging area and a large (dark) dance floor with a stage and another bar. I'm glad I heeded the warning to come before 11pm, because the space filled up quick. Drinks were fairly priced. Beer ranged from $5-$8 and mixed drinks were $8. I had a good amount to drink. It's great that there's no dress code, because you wanna be comfortable when you hit the dark dance floor. They played all the types of music I had expected, including old Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, and a lot of Prince (R.I.P.) I did notice that the smaller bar area had different music than the dance floor. The music at the bar was older, late 90s early 2000s hip-hop, and the main dance floor had later 2000s. I'm not sure if that's a usual thing with this event, but it wasn't bad. I had a great time

I LOVE this event…read more This past Halloweekend Saturday, Nick C. thought of the genius idea to come to the Rub, an event held every last Saturday at the Bell House. It was about a 45 minute wait in line but well worth it. They charged a $15 cover that day, I hate covers but that's pretty damn cheap considering how huge the venue is and great the event was. The Bell House is a warehouse divided into a small bar area and a huge stage area. The crowd is great and the place has a very Generation Y feel to it. The music that night and the last/first time I was here, featured classics of the 90s/early 2000s (basically my childhood). I would assume that's the theme and motif of the Rub, to replicate a night out in the city during that epoch. So for that, I bestow it a very emphatic 5 stars.

Greenpoint

Overall rating: 4.1…read more Surprisingly I had a really nice time here on a date. Granted I've had a lot of drinks. While I had a good experience, there are too many specific low reviews that I can see how this has bad reviews. My cover was $20, I can't imagine it being $30! I love the different rooms and all the smoke. The dj was really good. I went on a Friday around 11 and there wasn't that many people. I was expecting it to be more crowded.

I came in…read moreabout 45 minutes before closing and asked if it was possible to get a discounted entry since they were closing soon and there was no line - and said I would buy a drink inside(which I have done before). As soon as I walked in, I waved at the male employee inside door and he automatically said "I don't like your energy, hold on. I might not even let you in because of that" Then proceeded to patronize me, scream at me and wave his hands in my face, telling me to get the fuck out of here for even asking. I was speaking at a normal volume and he chose to make a scene, yelling and closely following my friends and I out - taunting us, trying to loudly embarrass and shame us for even asking for a discount - though we were already leaving... I asked a simple question and it could have easily just been a "no". Instead, I was mocked by a belligerent, condescending man that made me feel extremely unsafe. The other staff members also witnessed his deranged tirade and did nothing to mediate, and if anything, enabled him. I have been a patron of this venue before but never again. I have never experienced such disrespect and lack of professionalism from a front door person before. The place is not "good" enough to treat people this way. I started recording because I was so shocked by this nasty behavior and thought it should be documented. Do not come here..

The programming is thoughtful and deliberate: great DJs who actually play what the crowd wants, live acts, and events that draw people of all ages without feeling chaotic. Even on busy nights, the staff keeps things running smoothly, and the crowd is respectful and upbeat. It's a place where you can enjoy good music, good company, a feeling of community thinking that we're all in this together, and a sense of authenticity that's getting harder to find in the city. In conclusion, 5 stars for the crowd and the club that keeps it happy

I have a love/hate relationship with this place…read more I have had horrendous experiences here where an entire birthday group of 15 people left the line outside to go elsewhere because bouncers were on a weird power trip beefing with random people behind us in line. I have also had fun nights here with great music, dancing, and vibes. I'm officially old now and my thoughts on the place are tempered --that I'm glad it exists and it's an important space for the whole community. This has been a fairly reliable and solid place to dance which a good mix of genres, crowds, and vibes for years now. Used to frequent as I lived right over in Clinton Hill while in college. Oftentimes it has been the only place close by to dance in that kind of setting. The drinks are fine and bartenders typically chill. They did look at us like we were crazy one night when we asked for two long island iced teas haha... ...but also like actually why not? Maybe I want that chaos in my life. They said no, probably for the best. Bouncers outside have been hit or miss over the years but honestly you can say that about any place, they keep BS out so i can't blame them. I don't think the place should really ever have a cover including when it was at its busiest, but I think it may be necessary for overhead. The bathroom line can get long and people take their time in there doing what they'll do.. Can be a wildcard for what it will be like inside, but if you come with a fun group, problem solved. Overall the staff is "no BS" to put it simply, so as long and you're chill and respectful, you *shouldn't* have any problems.
