RAISED BY WOLVES @ UTC LA JOLLA…read more Raised by Wolves is located inside UTC La Jolla, tucked away in the very back of the mall near the Din Tai Fung area. I would definitely recommend parking around Corner Bakery or near 24 Hour Fitness for the closest way in. This was my very first time going to Raised by Wolves. I made a reservation on OpenTable, and if you are reading this right now, I highly recommend booking one. When we got there, the wait was two hours for people without a reservation. I booked for 9 PM on a Saturday night with my friends after dinner. We actually arrived at UTC earlier than expected, so we let the host know and they let us in about 20 minutes early. As for parking, they do not validate here. Parking is free for the first hour and then two dollars per hour after that, so just be aware that you may end up paying for parking when you visit this bar. It is set up like a speakeasy, which is really cool. You get to see where the actual bar is hidden. We ended up ordering a bunch of cocktails and the drinks were super great. I really loved the vibe overall. It was lively and chatty, and the staff was super friendly. The ambiance is very dark and classy. Keep in mind they do not serve food here. It is purely drinks only. Overall, I would definitely recommend stopping by.

You can essentially sit wherever, but the bar is the best seat in the house IMO. The scenery was cool and had the prohibition era feel to it, however the music was current and WAY TOO loud. There is nothing more annoying to have to shout to the person sitting over the next barstool for a conversation. So there's that. We ordered the Island Old Fashioned, which sounded interesting, but...alittle disappointed. I wanted to order another cocktail, but we had dinner reservations. The bartender(s) barely spoke and if they did, we wouldn't have been able to hear them, you know, because of the loud music. Maybe we'll come again for other cocktails when we visit San Diego again. Until then, RBW is a "check off the list" kind of thing.

The theater was nice enough, although our seating area could have used a good deep cleaning. There were crumbs and other leftover food noticeable. The waitress who took our order once seated seemed annoyed she had to climb to the top where we were sitting with obvious exacerbation over the task. In the two times she was there to take our orders I was displeased with the way we were treated, and some of the comments she made. I got the impression she was annoyed with the audience of children, which mad the experience substantially less enjoyable for me and my son. I will definitely not be going back to this theater and expected a lot more from La Jolla, especially when paying almost $50 for a matinee and over $100 on food. Definitely think this theater could take a renovation in their weekday staff and provide their customers with a more enjoyable movie dining experience. When someone doesn't enjoy their job it shows, and I saw this with several staff members there that day. Would not go back or recommend.

On the website it says it's the closest one to the amphitheater. When we arrived at 5pm (the event starts at 6pm), security hadn't event opened yet and they told us they were waiting to get the word to allow people in. We were the first to be there and there was no line at all. The list of prohibited items was shorter than what they have on the website. Also, someone asked if backpacks are allowed and security said backpacks are fine; they said something sized like those huge army duffel bags are not allowed. They didn't check inside our bags at all. People brought in outside food. It was pretty lax actually. I'm not sure if a paid event would be more strict. We could have arrived later and still gotten a good seat, maybe 30 min before the event. Since we were the first ones in, we made a bee line to the very front center seats. We had bought bleacher cushions from Amazon. They had cushions for rent for $4 and blankets for rent for $8. The first maybe 10-15 rows all have backs to the seating. Beyond that, further back, there's no back support. After sitting for 3 hrs, the bench even with the cushion gets uncomfortable. I'd want to bring a pillow for my back next time. They had alcoholic drinks for sale, like wine, beer. But they were a little bit pricey. They also had snacks like takis, popcorn, candy and sodas. The bathrooms are at the top when you enter and they were clean. The sound for the movie was great. We could clearly hear the dialogue and could feel the subwoofer. We were in the shade the whole time for the 6 showing.

RIMAC arena is a high tech gymnasium that is good for volleyball games and other indoor court…read moresports. We saw UCSD take on UCLA in volleyball. UCSD won in three sets. There is a ticket fee for all non students. The small arena has a large screen scoreboard that is paired up with a loud sound system for music. It's very entertaining and fun during the breaks. They have a "block party" for every UCSD block and the staff throws free t shirts into the stands. There is one small snack stand for sodas, nachos, pretzels and typical sports food. It was staffed with two people. There is no beer or wine served here so get ready for Gatorade. The arena is a nice volleyball venue where 200-300 spectators watched the game very comfortably. It was fun with music and the great announcer.

Eh. I've never…read morereally been a fan of seeing shows at Rimac Arena. I mean, when you wanna check out a hot show and you're REALLY excited about it... it's hard to get upset about the venue. You just wanna catch the performance. This was the case last night for the big Flight of the Conchords show at UCSD. Been wanting to see those cats for years, and finally, they brought their tour through San Diego. The show could have been at the Miramar Landfill for all I cared... I just wanted to see the best musical comedy duo since Tenacious D up close and personal, and it happened to be on this particular college campus. The show was great, but I despise the layout of Rimac. It's primarily used to house the UCSD basketball teams (both men and women), and it doubles as a large concert venue for bands and artists with a big draw. Unfortunately, the space yields some terrible acoustics. I don't think shows were necessarily top of mind during construction of this venue, and it's apparent by the vast amount of metal pillars and various other adornments that cause the sound to bounce all over the place. I think they could spend some of that trust fund loot to throw some egg crates on the walls to absorb the sound, but that's just me. You know when you see a show in a gymnasium, and for a moment, you totally forget that you're in some sweaty sports venue? Well, that's not the case here. You're well aware that you're in a basketball arena, for sure. You really have to commend the staff at UCSD for doing so many great things for the students enrolled here, though. Seems like they have a different music festival going on every month (Sungod, for example). However, I just wish they could warm up the arena somehow. It'd be like doing yoga in the middle of Time's Square. Sure, the yoga would awesome... but it'd be really tough to get the full experience because you're in the middle of a bustling intersection. Like that yoga comparison, it's hard to fully get into 'show mode' here. But coming full circle, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to see some of your favorite bands. It's unfortunate that our city doesn't have more 'real' music venues in town for an act of this caliber. Uncomfortable bench seating in a college sports hall hardly does the trick for me.
