Before coming to UCSD, I was aware of this "tradition" but didn't think that it would be such a grandiose deal! It is literally like a "free" coachella to those who couldn't make it. And the best part? It is on campus! Since UCSD doesn't have close by rival schools, and we are divided into six colleges, the best way to bring the school together is by music. Sungod is hosted at RIMAC Field Spring Quarter, May time around Week 5-Week 8. This year it was on May 3, 2015. The theme is "carnival", so there were a lot of free carnival rides, carnival food, and amazing performances! Rockstar was one of the sponsors and came out to pass out free Rockstar drinks for the (dehydrated) students. This field is also used for Graduation in the June, and it is also located right next to RIMAC Annex (where the basketball games are), RIMAC Gym, and ERC college. Most of the time when I pass by, I only see the baseball/softball/soccer team practicing, so majority of the time it is empty. RIMAC field can hold up to about 20,000 people comfortably....with still lots of rides and space to sit around and chill! There are a few restrooms located by the very bottom of the entrance upon entering, but during Sungod they bring in many more portables. Overall, RIMAC field is HUGE and definitely a fun place to host any type of large scale event! A concert would be amazing here! But I wonder how they keep up with watering the grass, since its so large.... Either way, if you come to UCSD, RIMAC Field is probably something you will drive by/walk by/pass by! On weekends, there are a lot of games hosted here.

Note that there were no backpacks allowed. It's a great space for a big outdoor concert like Jack Johnson. HUGE field with all open seating. Since there are NO REAL SEATS, this one pays to get there early to be seated close to the stage. There was only wine and beer at this event. I would've liked some frozen cocktails. There were also a bunch of food vendors. I didn't partake, but we saw people with hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, wood fired pizza, crepes, lemonade, etc. The food vendors were CASH ONLY. There were some ATMs there, but unfortunately issues with the network or electricity, so those without cash without cash were out of luck. There was a booth with merchandise, but unfortunately they ran out of sweatshirts very early in the evening. It was a really fun concert even with us being really far back on the grass field. We could hear everything and are still able to have a conversation with our friends. Pretty good for a concert venue in San Diego. I would definitely want to show up early, bring a blanket and sweatshirt!

It has so many San Diego local eateries in the park that are fabulous such as Hodads, Cardiff Market, grand Ole'BBQ, and so many more. We loved the Pacifico grill. They served up grilled NY streak and lobster sandwiches on a buttered roll. The park views are amazing and Petco's location in the gas lamp gives attendees many options for pregame or post game fun. It's a blast here since most home games are sold out. I love this place !

I was in Section 306, Seat 20 (next to the stairs). While I was in a far section, I still had a pretty good straight on view of the stage. The screens were large and high quality. They mostly used the screens behind the stage, and less of the side screens. It was still too far to see the band on stage, but the screens were still good. I was thinking someone could bring binoculars if they really wanted to see the stage from this section, lol! But I still enjoyed this high-level view, being able to see all the screens and laser effects and such. They even had fireworks at the end, which I've never seen at this venue but it was awesome! Audio was great, but also loud, so maybe recommend getting ear protection even for the far sections. Overall, I think most seats in Petco Park have a great view. For concerts, I do wish they had more merch booths and I wish there was a map of the locations. I waited an hour for merch, and was cutting it close to the concert start time. You really have to go early to have enough time for merch, drinks/food, and getting to your seats. We got to the stadium around 7pm, merch line 7:25-8:20 (multi-tasked going to restroom & buying drinks while partner waited in line), got to seats 8:30ish, set started at 8:45. Getting out was also difficult and crowded. I saw some people leave early to avoid the rush. I was stuck in peak rush. The first trolley out was packed like sardines. Just a warning!

Since it's a bowl shape, you're right on top of the court. * The Vibe: The "open-air" concourse is such a San Diego move--it's great to step out for a breather between games without feeling like you're trapped in a basement. * Organization: For a sold-out NCAA event, getting through security was surprisingly smooth, though the "clear bag" policy is strictly enforced, so don't try to sneak anything in. The Not-So-Good: * Concession Lines: Between sessions, the lines for food and beer were brutal. If you don't time your run perfectly, you're going to miss the start of the next tip-off. * Cashless Only: The whole place is cashless now. Great for speed, but a pain if you didn't come prepared. * Parking: It's SDSU, so parking is always a headache. If you didn't rideshare, you probably spent 20 minutes circling the structures. There was live music, specialty cocktails and raffles. One food kiosk was open for Tanner's Burgers and snacks. It provided a wonderful elevated viewing platform. We enjoyed the Oceanside drone and fireworks to celebrate this special year. This was our first drone show. We preferred it and chose to go out this night prior to the 4th fireworks show at our home. The arena feels modern, clean, and well-designed, and honestly, there isn't a bad seat in the house. No matter where you're sitting, you have a great view of the action. One thing people often mention is parking. You can pay for arena parking, which typically ranges from $15-$25 depending on the event, or you can park for free behind some of the nearby businesses and enjoy a short walk. Personally, I think it's a fair trade-off, especially considering everything the arena offers. The food options are surprisingly good for an event venue. The smash burgers are delicious, and the steak nachos are hands-down my favorite. They also offer a good selection of alcoholic beverages for those who want to enjoy a drink while watching a game or concert. What really stands out is the variety of events. From hockey, indoor football, soccer, and basketball to concerts and family entertainment, there's always something happening. The atmosphere is energetic, fun, and welcoming every time we've visited. One of the best things Frontwave Arena does is offer free tickets to many of their sporting events for local families through promotions on their Instagram page. Follow them and keep an eye out! If paying $15-$25 for parking helps support a venue that regularly gives away tickets so families and friends can enjoy games together, I'm more than happy to do it. The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival had a lot variety of vendors all welcoming, friendly, and many tables having a spin the wheel for prizes. Thanks to Yelp SD and the LJ Art & Wine Festival for the opportunity to snag a ticket to the Wine & Beer Garden which included 5 tickets for drinks and/or bites. This section was gated and closed off, plenty of tables and chairs, concert stage with live music entertainment, and a variety of options for drinks and limited food options that included The Food Box, which served up some tasty sliders as they operate now with only catering or delivery. A standout spot was Mezco Mezcal Cocktails, the worker was friendly and helpful. The workers at registration and the entrance were also nice and the overall area was a great central spot to go in and out of with the fun action all around the festival. Overall, a great event connecting the community and a delightful experience!

We went to see the Arrival movie screening with the short story author Ted Chiang on a Saturday…read morenight. It was a free event. We parked at the Gilman Parking Structure. On the website it says it's the closest one to the amphitheater. When we arrived at 5pm (the event starts at 6pm), security hadn't event opened yet and they told us they were waiting to get the word to allow people in. We were the first to be there and there was no line at all. The list of prohibited items was shorter than what they have on the website. Also, someone asked if backpacks are allowed and security said backpacks are fine; they said something sized like those huge army duffel bags are not allowed. They didn't check inside our bags at all. People brought in outside food. It was pretty lax actually. I'm not sure if a paid event would be more strict. We could have arrived later and still gotten a good seat, maybe 30 min before the event. Since we were the first ones in, we made a bee line to the very front center seats. We had bought bleacher cushions from Amazon. They had cushions for rent for $4 and blankets for rent for $8. The first maybe 10-15 rows all have backs to the seating. Beyond that, further back, there's no back support. After sitting for 3 hrs, the bench even with the cushion gets uncomfortable. I'd want to bring a pillow for my back next time. They had alcoholic drinks for sale, like wine, beer. But they were a little bit pricey. They also had snacks like takis, popcorn, candy and sodas. The bathrooms are at the top when you enter and they were clean. The sound for the movie was great. We could clearly hear the dialogue and could feel the subwoofer. We were in the shade the whole time for the 6 showing.
