Authentic Peruvian food from the ceviche to the chicha morada. This is a place to eat not get fancy, though the waitresses and staff are very hospitable and accomodating. Felt very welcome. Ordered a bunch of food (fried diced chicken [good], ceviche mixto original [excellent] and with mango [skip mango], milanesa de pollo [good], avocado salad [can skip], parihuela seafood soup [excellent], pescado a lo macho [excellent], maduros fritos [excellent], arroz tacu tacu [excellent], tres leches [excellent], and flan [excellent]. Been here before and got the chicken and lunch special which is also excellent. Great place- worth a visit if you're near Sunnyside, Queens. read more

I'm Peruvian and my husband loves tamales; since my to go place Chimu was out of tamales; we ventured on this place. Big big mistake. We ordered from Uber eats and the one stars are for the lucuma ice cream and the alfajores. Im Peruvian so I know this type of cuisine. I have never seen such a crusty, dry tamal in my life. The taste was not so bad but maybe they forgot one ingredient to make the tamal soft. The papa a la huancaina was a yellow sauce with no taste of feta or spice. We also order the red onions were soggy. The lucuma ice cream was good since they don't make it and the alfajor was ok. Overall it was a horrible and expensive dinner. Please do yourself a favor and order from a real Peruvian restaurant. Go to Chimu and taste their tamales and papa a la huancaina; you will see the difference. read more

Ordered the jalea because I wanted to have a cheat day. Lord Jesus, this thing is massive! For about 26 (excluding delivery fees), I got a HUGE platter of calamari, squid, mussels, fish, and yucca fries that was beyond delicious. It took me like 4 days to finish. What a steal, and SO good! Would definitely order again. Well packaged, got a bunch of sauces with it, and utensils. read more

Great atmosphere, I went there on a Saturday evening and was able to get a seat. Everyone that worked there was friendly. There was live music and everyone was having a good time. Sangria was good, calamari plate with fish and shrimp was amazing. I don't remember the name of my dish, but it was a fillet dish in tomato sauce, it was good but I liked my friends chicken pineapple rice plate better!!! I couldn't add the extra star because I smelled cleaning products (fabuloso) towards the end of my meal. Other than that this place is a gem! read more

This is a local hotspot. I've visited several times and each time was an enjoyable experience. To start, they serve complimentary red wine! Who can beat that? The servers are all extremely friendly and hospitable. The reason I gave it the 5 stars was due to their pollo a la brasa, the main event! This chicken is beyond explanation delicious. I've never had better rotisserie chicken and I don't believe I ever will! Now we typically get the first combo meal: it comes with rice, black beans, avocado salad, French fries and a whole chicken! All for $28. Their green sauce is tasty as well! Overall, we're probably gonna get dinner from here tonight as well haha. read more

I personally won't come back to this restaurant. When I first got there my mom and I ordered water with lemon, meaning just water with a piece of lemon; like most restaurants serve. When they brought our water with lemon, it looked like a lemonade, which it was not what I asked for. The food had no flavor at all. We ordered bistec a lo pobre and a ceviche. Aside from the assistance which was amazing by this gentleman. Then when we received the check. They had charged for the water. $3 which is nothing but even better restaurants never charge for that. read more

After middle school my buddies and I would spend $4.75 on a quarter chicken with rice & beans. Prices have gone up a bit since then but still has that same good old flavor. Their known for their peruvian style roasted chicken - lots of flavor, and always juicy. They serve fried pieces of corn nuts before every meal and usually provide a glass of wine on the house. Other great options are their ceviches, jaleas, and lomo saltados. read more

One of my favorite Spanish joints. I believe management may have changed (I say this due to the name/menu change) nonetheless, the food and service is still great. Good food+ GREAT prices! What's Great? *First off, the service is good. *parking is easy *good music/good volume Not everyone(wait-staff) speaks clear/fluent English but they understand everything you ask/tell them. Staff is always very pleasant. Their chicken is very juicy, tender and the salty roast flavors take over your mouth. Be careful because it's always piping hot! The sides are good but what I love most has to be the GREEN AND WHITE SUACES they put at each table. Be a sure to dip your chicken into each. You won't regret it! Another thing that "Yelpers" will love is the $5 Sangria coupon you get just for checking in! ..not to mention a complimentary glass of wine.. I like to try new things on the menu so I ordered a half chicken with fries, half chicken with rice and beans for my lady (our usual) and a fried fish with plantains and salad (to try). All of that food plus the $5 Sangria, a coke and a Snapple for just $39! Can't beat that! THE ONLY REASON I CANT GIVE 5 STARS!.... The restaurant is great but it is a really small space. The outside seating definitely helps, especially in the summer months but during the winter time, it can get very cramped. Not a lot of table Space and on a busy night, not a lot of arm space. However, they try their best to ensure you have the most space possible. The wait staff and bus boy need room as well. read more

Ambiance - this is hole in the wall style restaurant, which is not a bad thing. A lot of spanish people. I went on a friday and there was live music which was great. Small place so I recommend making a reservation ahead of time. Service was great. Ceviche de Pescado - Fish Quality was not great but I did enjoy this dish. It was very authentic and tasted like when I was in Peru. 6/10 1/4 Rotisserie Chicken - Very tender meat. came with a side of rice and beans or french fries and salad. very generous portions. great price. highly recommend 7/10 Desert: Tres Leches Cake - Im cuban so I like my tres leches! haha. 9/10 Alcohol: Cusqueña - Great Peruvian Beer! 10/10 Pisco Sour - Very tasty and very authentic! Remember, this is made with egg whites. Highly recommend 10/10! Overall: Not the best Peruvian food ive ever had but not bad either. read more

Pio Pio Riko is a hidden Peruvian gem of Sunnyside, Queens. It is conveniently located one-block away from the (7) train, and is a 15-20 min subwayride from Grand Central Terminal (Manhattan). When you go, make sure to bring someone who can speak a little bit of Spanish, or else ordering your food will be quite an adventure. My Peruvian co-worker introduced this restaurant to me, but this time I went without him and had to rely on my high school Spanish skills. Although I made reservations, the seating took a while (it's not a large restaurant to begin with). I highly recommend three dishes: Whole Roasted Chicken ($7), Ceviche Mixto ($12), and Jalea ($20). To conquer the Jalea, you need at group of 6 hungry people, we found out the hard way. The Pollo (roasted chicken) is better than I had expected. I read some reviews that it was dry / nothing amazing, but that was not the case at all. The ceviche is excellente, and the milky vinegarized sauce (called El leche de tigre = "Tiger Milk") is my favorite part of it. I use it as a dip for the calamari-style fried Jalea seafood pieces, so whenever I order the Jalea, I make sure to order a ceviche dish (they have three kinds) to go with it. The decor screams Peruvian pride with the tables colored in red & white (TGI Fridays-esque) symbolic of their national flag. Though not a "hole in the wall" joint, Pio Pio is as authentic as you could get. This along with Flor De Mayo are my favorite Peruvian establishments in NYC. If you're looking to seafood-yourself-out without spending a lot (we went in a group of 6, each of ate until we could eat no more, but spent less than $20 including tax & tip, with drinks & dessert too), this is 'un buen restaurante' to dine at. read more

My friend and I went for dinner on 10/2/23. We tried to order a combo, and the waitress said we couldn't order one. We ordered drinks while we looked over the menu more. When she came back, I asked her what the problem was with the combo (if they didn't have chicken, or what.) She told us that there is a "new rule" that we can only order the combo to go, but we can order all of the same things for a higher price. I asked her what the higher price was, and she said she didn't know. I asked her if she knew mathematics but she said no. So we drank our drinks and left. Maybe this "new rule" is only for fat gay gringos, but if you are expecting to order what is on the menu for the prices that are printed, you may be disappointed. read more

Actually I always thought the place was much larger whenever I passed by, but it lacks space, it's in a slim two aisle seating format. The artifacts hanging on the restaurant made for an authentic touch of the food, wine bottles on display and the tables remind me of TGIFriday's red and white stripes. I have been here a handful of times. On the last visit we were seated at the window aisle, a nice view of the outside, but where we sat everyone can see in as we dine. It took a little bit before the waitress got to us. And they all seemed in a hustle bustle mode. During lunch there weren't that many people dining but for dinner it gets pretty full most of the time. This is only the second Pio Pio I have been to. The other Pio Pio didn't have the Riko in the name, same chain? Anyway, I thought the roasted chicken was done well, with it's soft meat, charred flavorful skin and a roasted flavor of spices, lick-able to the bone. But not as good as the other one I been to in Manhattan, timing maybe? The not so smooth green sauce was the same as I had it and added a touch to the meat, it's like a mild, peppery-cucumber like sauce. Like most the other joints similar in category, it's very basic food cooked well. Vegetables, beans and rice along with quality roasted chicken. read more

I guess after reading Karen C.'s and Wuita C.'s reviews my friends and I were pretty lucky (or so I think because I didn't see how they handled our corn nuts or food). Our experience was pretty good... we shared the Combo Limeno and with soda and complimentary Pisco Sours I think our bill came out to around $30-35. But now I'm wondering if they were in fact "on the house". Everything was really tasty and our waitress was nice plus we came at a good time because we were seated right away! The bathroom was pretty gross...although I wasn't expecting anything nicer. The sink is located outside of the bathroom and I started to get squeamish when I noticed people bypass the sink to go back to their tables or even the kitchen! Eeek! Flying in on the red eye from San Francisco via Atlanta, I finally arrive in New York. My friend takes me to his favorite local Peruvian restaurant - Pio Pio Riko, this corner place not far from the subway station in Queens. It's a late lunch for us and I order the Ceviche Mixto. My dining companion gets the Lomo Saltado. Both are tasty dishes overall. I can't remember a whole lot about it, which can be a good and bad thing. We also catch up and watch the rain come down over a pitcher of Sangria. Sangria - I'm big on the fruit marinating in the stuff. Well, they had lots of tiny fruit pieces added into the sangria, but there definitely wasn't any marinating going on. That was bit of disappointment. They do add this cute little plastic thing to your glass for a bit of character. As we watched the rain come down, we also felt the rain come down on us. Yes, the ceiling was leaking. I looked across and saw drops of water land on him, the table, and into our drinks. We moved the table over a bit, but what can you do? The restaurant has a leak! Overall, a decent place. There was a lot of traffic in the couple hours we hung out there. (The rain may have helped business since most people were dodging into any local businesses to avoid the sudden downpour.) My friend has been to Peru, so since he likes this joint, he may have a higher opinion of it. I haven't been to Peru, so I can't really compare it to much. read more

I visited Rico Peruvian with my sister Paola not expecting it to be so good. We had the whole chicken ($10), and the Jalea ($25).. The Jalea was on point. The platter was huge and delicious. There is nothing better than some good quality octopus, squid, fish and shrimp fried with freshly squeezed lemon juice on top. Omgness.. they should make a song about it "Jalea, Jalea"!. Most people I know have never even heard of it.. (missing out).. The Peruvian chicken was also excellent. The green aji did not have the color or flavor I'm used to but wasn't bad. The yellow sauce was d-lish. Peruvian cuisine is at the top of heap as one of the most flavorful and delicious foods. The restaurant is small and it's little tight between tables. The service was not great, I had to hunt down the waitress a time or two.. I think they were understaffed during a busy time. You have to park on the street at metered parking but that's normal for New York City. Finding parking in this area was fairly easy at dinner time. I ordered combo limeno in total came out to be $32.65 with tax. Not bad. It comes with a whole chicken beans, rice, salad, and salchi papa's. When the food comes I noticed the portion comes very small. The salad was combined with the hot fries and hotdog. But I noticed that they included another plate and that was the salad itself. So they cut the French fries and hotdog to a very small portion. A portion that is suppose to feed a family I'm assuming 4 people. In the picture we are some of the fries because we were hungry but why would you add salad into the fries? Guys I'm sorry I give good reviews but I just hate money hungry businesses and makes other hardworking restaurants look bad. I love this restaurant not because of their chicken but their CALAMARI and CEVICHE DE MARISCOS. When entering this restaurant you'll immediately notice how small it is. The waitress however are very nice and helpful. As we sat down she gave these huge fried corn kernels along with some kind of white sauce. They were actually delicious and addicting. CHICKEN: My bf and I heard so many good reviews about their chicken and green sauce but i wasn't a big fan. I feel like their seasoning was a bit salty and the green sauce was missing some kick to it. ( pio pio still has the best green sauce besides mine) I make my own green sauce which taste similar to Pio Pios. SERVINGS: They give you ENORMOUS servings for the price. However, the menu prices were different from what they billed us on the receipt. We didnt bother to correct it with thm as we were so stuffed to even argue. The Picada Limeña was AMAZING, we didnt think it would make us full so fast. We ordered a Tequila Sunrise and a Whiskey Sour. Safe to say drinks are well made and enjoyable. The Arroz chaufa was good but had a little too much salt and the 1/2 pollo a la brasa was amazing but the fries needed a little more time in the fryer. Other than that, the live music and nice lighting was amazing atmosphere for our special dinner date. The rotisserie chicken is pretty good but the increased the price by $5 dollars for a whole, I get it inflation but what about increments

Went here w/ my fiancée last night, we were trying to eat somewhat healthy so we figured a little rotisserie chicken would hit the spot. This place is kind of small but we didn't have to wait for a table. We decided on one of the combos which was a whole chicken, salad w/ avocado, rice & beans & french fries (yep, there goes the diet) and my fiancée ordered sweet plantains which were the best i've ever had. The green sauce is really good as was the chicken. The waitresses were very attentive, my only gripe, it had to be 90 degrees in there. Plus they give everyone, eat-in or take-out a complimentary glass of wine, which is a nice touch. BUT, that wine + the already hot place = an even hotter place, by the time we were done i was dripping literally. Not to mention the place got packed by the time we were ready to leave. We would definitely try it again however. read more

I was randomly craving for some Pio Pio one day, and my boyfriend suggested going to Pio Pio Riko. "It's the cheaper version of Pio Pio" he said. The looks of the restaurant wasn't impressive but the smell of chicken was ridiculously good once you entered the place. We ordered the combo chalaco (whole chicken, avocado salad, french fries, rice & beans) and a glass of sangria. We asked our waitress if it was enough food for two people...we found out later on it was more than enough! We got greedy so we also asked for a side of maduros and yuccas. We also found out later our side dishes were huge. As we were waiting for our food, we were nibbling on the fried corn pieces. I never liked them in general. Reminded me of unpopped kernels or pigeon food. That's me though. My sangria was a huge glass of sweet Robitussin. So glad our waitress gave us complimentary glasses of wine (for me to mix together). Finally, our food came out... plates after plates of food. The whole chicken was so flavorful and oh so juicy. The skin was to die for esp. with the green sauce. It gave me the tingles. Their homemade ranch(?) dressing that came with the avocado salad was so delicious. The one thing I wish I didn't order were the maduros (if you know me, I LOVE maduros) - they were more like green plantains; not sweet and soft enough for me. There were so many other dishes I wanted to try - tres leches, ceviche, jalea, lomo saltado but we were beyond stuffed. We had to take home 1/3 of our meal! If you want casual Peruvian food that's also affordable and accessible, I recommend Pio Pio Riko. Most of the bad reviews are associated with the way they do their bill. Nothing to do with the food. Luckily, I knew that the tip was already included so I paid my bill as is. It is a little odd how they round up each dish with tax and add a miscellaneous-like tip but that's how they run their business. I too would have been pissed if I didn't know. [Update] Their fish ceviche is amazing. Avoid the mixed ceviche though! read more

5 stars all for the chicken this time. Since I tried only the rotisserie chicken from here for the first visit. I had a lot of rotisserie chicken from other places and I never liked them until I try this place. They made the chicken really well. The meat is soft but not that soft like taste smash tuna. I can taste the tender and juiciness from the meat. The flavor is so well marinated that I couldn't believe that is just a rotisserie chicken. In order to confirm the chicken taste better than others' Just in case it wasn't because I was too hungry to feel so I had to order another chicken from another famous place the following day to compare. And the results are obvious. They are a lot better! The price is even cheaper! I will go back soon coz that chicken can make me miss the place. read more
