I also like that there's an option for sticky black rice as the base. It's a tiny place with only one six person table inside (plenty of outdoor seating) and they do takeaway. Firstly, the people that work here are totally awesome - very chatty and genuine - just the kind of people that you enjoy giving business to. I had a green smoothie and a chicken Bibimbap to go. The smoothie was very green indeed! I loved it, but be warned - this tasted like veggies. It's not one of those healthy smoothies that hides behind sweet, fruity tastes - it fully embraces it's healthiness, rocking the broccoli and spinach unashamedly, so if you don't like your smoothie to taste to 'green' then this one isn't for you! They have plenty of tasty options, so perhaps go for one of the other smoothies insetead! As for the chicken Bibimbap (which I horrendously mispronounced, might I add) this was very tasty! I'd never really had this sort of thing before, so it took me a few minutes to get used to the flavours, but once I got past that it was a very good take-away meal. The portion was massive and they'd packaged it all up really nicely, making it easy to take to a park and eat in the sun without any bother or mess. There were so many other things that I would have happily tried in here! They had amazing looking fresh sushi up for grabs which, though a little pricier than elsewhere, did look rather great. I'm sure that I'll be back here! Next time you're walking past, pop in and see what you think! :)

The layout is clean and simple - no frills, but still comfortable and modern. The service was quick, efficient, and friendly. The karaage was a generous portion given I ordered the 'side-dish/snack' version, and tasty. The creamy kimchi sauce was also yummy, although it was more mayo with a hint of kimchi - delicious, but as someone who loooves kimchi, it was a shame not to have something a teeny bit punchier because karaage and kimchi is a combination I could definitely get behind! Overall, great. I'm definitely going to pop in and try their gyozas at some point!

But no place in Brighton can conjure up a good takeaway Katsu. A dilemma. Then I found Sunoso (it just appeared on Just Eat. Like Asian Fusion magic). I had Katsu and some Karaage. The Katsu was incredible for takeaway Katsu. Easily the best I've had. Better than Pompoko, Itsu, Kokoro and Sushimania. It was light, tasty, non-greasy and with lots vegetables and a choice of either white or brown rice. Delivered within 30 mins. The Karaage was okay, very tasty but a tad dry. Could have done with a slice of lemon. Reasonably priced. Tempted to call my girlfriend and encourage her to stay away for another night.

Admittedly, I do always order the same thing though: chicken satay to start, and beef Pad Thai for a main. But it's always amazing. And so reasonably priced! It's perfect for a lazy evening for me. Tips: it's cash only and the Co-op on the corner's ATM is not always great for being in service. It's also BYOB, but the Co-op DOES have you covered for that! It also is quite small, so I'd call for a reservation if you want to go after 6:30pm on a weekend. Staff are always lovely. Definitely a firm favourite. :)

Update: January 2009…read more Last week they were open again in Seven Dials, and as busy as ever. Not quite sure what is going on - best to ring ahead to check! ------------------------ Update: October 2008 The restaurant in Seven Dials has now closed: the branch at 42 Waterloo Street, Hove, BN3 1AY remains open. Tel: 01273 733 733 ------------------------- This is an incredibly popular Thai restaurant in the Seven Dials area, where booking is essential every night of the week. The reason for its popularity isn't hard to find: a wide range of reasonably authentic Thai dishes, all at very reasonable prices. They do an especially wide range of fish dishes, including the 'Red Snapper' of the title (although I presume this is bought in frozen, since it's not found in UK waters?). They don't have an alcohol license, so bring your own - this also helps keep prices down. Although the menu focuses on fish and meat, there are plenty of vegetarian options (they will do any dish with tofu, on request). If you ask, they will also stir-fry or steam your fish if you prefer it not to be deep fried. Portions of rice and noodles are generous, so order one between two. Expect a two-course dinner for two to come to about £15 a head. The lunch-time menu is very good value too. Despite being very busy, service is always pretty good and friendly and, being a small place, you have no trouble finding someone to help if you need it. Slight downers: because it's small it does get very crowded, so it's not the place for a quiet romantic meal. Also the lavatory is accessed via the outside, and gets a bit chilly in winter. But it would be churlish to deduct a star just for that

I guess there's always a danger of disappointment when a restaurant comes so highly recommended, but I just didn't find Sukhothai to be all that outstanding! I am a big fan of Thai food and hence, well versed in the many Thai restaurants of Brighton. Long story short, I've had better! The restaurant itself is comfortable and traditionally decked-out- it's a nice enough space in which to dine, sure! And the waitresses were friendly and attentive, possibly a little too attentive, since there weren't many customers to tend to. The food, however, was just a bit...unexceptional. I missed the ornate garnishes at Muang Thai and the tasty dishes at Thai Orchid. My green curry was fine, the flavours were good, but it wasn't nearly spicy enough. My dining companion's Pad Thai was also tasty, but there were no peanuts!! All in all, pretty standard food in a nice enough restaurant. The location near the seafront is handy if you're visiting, but not so great if you live in a residential area out of town.

A group of us had planned to go for dinner elsewhere but our first choice was fully booked, so we wandered a few streets along to this place, to see whether they could squeeze us in. Being a Thursday night, we'd been a little shocked about how packed the first place was but, happily, Sukhothai Palace was completely empty, so fitting us in was no bother at all. The woman seated us at a lovely table and handed us the menus. The decor in really nice in here - it felt a lot more upmarket than I had been expecting actually and I was impressed by it all. That being said, the atmosphere was a little lacking, with us being the only customers in the place for the majority of the time we were in there. The menu is great - there is so much choice and variety that I doubt anyone who struggle to find something they liked the sound of. I opted for the sizzling duck with jasmine rice. The food arrived and the portions were hearty, which is always a plus in my book. The rice was done well, though it didn't taste especially different to boiled rice, I must say, and the sizzling duck was tasty! The sauce was delicious, however the duck was a little bit fatty in places, which was a bit of a shame. It came with some crunchy onion and a few leaves, which were nice little garnishes to add something to the dish. I ate it all and enjoyed it very much! The service in here was pleasant, but it was a little bit slow and relaxed, especially considering we were the only people in the place! However, the staff were very smiley and polite, so other than this, there was nothing to put you off! As for prices, mine came to £10 (without a drink). I'd say the average main came to around £7-£9, with rice adding another £1.50, so all in all, the prices are pretty decent in here, particularly for the nice portion sizes. This was a really pleasant experience and I'll probably be back to try more!

If you decide on the latter then a good place to go would be Gekko, especially because it's designed for the indecisive folk like me. Serving Thai, Malaysian, Chinese, Texmex, sushi, pizza, pasta and soups, there's something for everyone in this all-you-can-eat diner. During the day its just £6.99 a head and in the evening the menu is extended to £12.99 with additions of noodles, stir-fry, tandoor and chargrill Indian. Considering this place is a buffet venue, I think the decor is quite tasteful with stripped flooring and high-backed chairs, making it feel much more like a restaurant than most. The food, too, considering there is an abundance of different cuisines, also isn't that bad. Dishes like Mee Goring and chicken fajitas aren't often found on the same menu in buffet halls. Desserts aren't just a yoghurt or a piece of fruit either. There's cakes, muffins, pastries and even a creperie. For the genre it's in, it isn't bad at all. Perhaps I haven't been to enough to judge.

It may even just be a name-change: I can't see any difference, not that this is all a bad thing. This is still the Asian greasy spoon, the Far East equivalent to a fry-up, and every now and again this is exactly what you need. However, as buffet places in town go, Gekko isn't quite as nice as some of the others... nice being a pejorative term here. The food is, as expected, a grease factory. Unlike some of the other buffet places, it actually looks a bit rank: maybe the slightly yellow lighting was a bad idea. As well, the choice here is a little limited: the buffet being big, but not as packed with different flavours as some of the other places around town. The decor is also rubbish: the worst kind of Asian modernity, so often done in places like this, and always tacky and awful. It almost goes with the territory, but the crowd here is also particularly rubbish: the West Street clientele do not look their best when choking down a plate of noodles. No, there are better buffets, not much but still slightly... go there instead.

That's pretty much where the good stuff ends. Well that might be harsh. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good. The rice looked like it had been reheated a few times as did the chow mein. Magic Wok came highly recommended and I have not been disappointed in my first two orders with them. The menu is big, the food has great flavour, everything is cooked just right, and so far really consistent. The portions are big enough, the prices are very reasonable. I managed to feed 2 adults and 4 kids for £35 and no one was left hungry! And they still do their free item when you spend over £15, so look at the list of items ahead of time, a really a nice touch and many things to choose from. All aspects of my experiences were spot on, from the fast, accurate order taking, to the fast delivery with HOT food appearing in less than half the time I was quoted. Everything I ordered was so tasty, it would be hard to recommend one thing over another, but I have to sat the king prawn in satay sauce is a real winner. And the special curry. And the sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style. And salt and chilli chicken. And...you get the idea ;-) My search for great, fresh, delicious, consistent Chinese in Brighton is over!
