I have been to Gekko in Brighton twice. The first time it was not very good, so I complained. I only went back to use my vouchers I'd been given as compensation, and it was a million times worse than the first time I went so I will not be going again!
The buffet food is mainly lukewarm. The staff seem to stir it around, add water and more food to the already cold and dried up food from time-to-time. The rice was particularly bad, being all dried up around the edges and almost inedible. In fact, one of my party had food poisoning afterwards and we suspect it was the rice. Surely they should only keep food warm for the allowed time period and then throw it away/replace it, not keep topping it up/adding water/stirring it?!
As I wasn't particularly impressed with the buffet on my first visit, I was looking forward to trying the live cooking stations this time. I went to order a ham and mushroom pizza, only they'd run out of ham. So I ordered mushroom and pineapple instead. I was told it would be 20 mins but, after going back several times to ask if it was ready, I had to wait 40 mins!!! Gekko prides itself on being able to supply different cuisines so that everyone in your party can choose what they want, but when one meal takes 40 mins and you are sat there like a lemon while your friends eat their's is unacceptable. My friends were ready for dessert before I even got my pizza! The pizza itself was quite nice (but would have been nicer if it had had ham on it!!!). Many freshly cooked pizzas and noodles were left uneaten on tables, presumably because guests had got fed up waiting and opted for the buffet instead? The ordering process was chaotic with one member of staff writing orders haphazardly in a notebook and then giving you a numbered ticket. When I went back with my ticket he couldn't find my order in the notebook and was too busy actually making the pizzas to give me any information as to when mine would be ready!!! A complete shambles.
I was looking forward to trying the creperie, but it was closed, as was the Tandoori section (which one of my party had been looking forward to trying). The other desserts were all dried up and 'plastic' tasting. At least on my first visit there was lemon tart which was lovely. The other food that I didn't try looked awful, especially the dried up slick of chilli in the bottom of the tray. The sushi bar was almost empty. This was in the early evening, soon after the £12.99 menu had commenced, not 10.30pm I might add! If I'd been paying £12.99 per person I would not have been at all happy!
The state of the restaurant was terrible, the tables were sticky, the cutlery dirty and wet and the plates wet. Plates and glasses were being carried out of the kitchen in dishwasher trays which meant that water was dripping all over the floor. It was an accident waiting to happen as I saw a member of staff/customer slip on the wet floor at least every 30 seconds!
I will not be going back, it was worse than a disappointment, it was a serious health risk! read more
