Ok, cheap it ain't. £8.70 for Hake and chips. Chips good but nothing special. Fish v nice, excellent thin crispy batter. Here's the thing; if you're in Padstein, you like fish and chips, then this is your Mecca. Go worship.

Beef dripping is the key ingredient here for the battered fish, and it makes it taste brilliant.

Great location right on the tiny marina, with decent batter-fried fish (if you can keep it away…read morefrom the seagulls!). But it's the chips that really shine. These are made with a more traditional recipe that actually resembles and tastes like potato, rather than the ubiquitous, industrial, processed, fat-flavored French Fry that most seem to prefer these days. These chips are a lovely combination of soft and crisp, and far superior to Rick Stein's version, as far as I'm concerned.

However, a nice cashier in Rick's deli pointed us in the direction of this place to get the old cliché of fish and chips at this seaside tourist trap They have a prime spot right on the harbourside though it isn't perhaps the prettiest harbour in the world. We were blessed by glorious sunny weather when we were there and sunlight streamed in We were made to feel welcome on arrival. It was nice that they cooked our fish and chips to order. The portion was big enough for us to share. Nice crispy batter with moist flaky fish Unfortunately, the milkshakes were a disappointment. Strangely warm, I suspect they didn't contain real ice cream, which if true is a shame as they had a stand serving lovely local ice cream This is a pleasant enough spot for your fix of fish and chips in Padstow

I was genuinely disappointed with the food offerings. I began by considering the Cornish pasties…read moreand I asked the lady behind the counter if they were made by the company to learn no, but she claimed off pat that they were made to Rick's recipe. I don't get it as this guy literally has a mini empire in Padstow, cafes, fish n chip sit it and take away, a cookery school, a coffee bar, a fish bar. There's nowt to stop him firing out tasty pasties by the score. So I thought no thanks matey if you can't be bothered then I'll not bother either. I did buy two bottles of beer labelled with Chalky his now deceased pooch but here again top dollar at £3.5 each and no discount for buying 6 or 12. There were lots of jars and tinned food too but least effort from Rick so no thanks chum I'll stick with M&S. it's some comfort to know he won't miss my trade.

There was a sign on the door saying they were being hosted by Rick's deli We were a little disappointed when there turned out to be no cooked food available - fish fried in beef dipping sounded exactly what we needed as a reward for our exertions. One of the cashiers was kind enough to recommend another place in town for fish and chips As a foodie, I was never going to leave without a browse round the deli although the lack of access to refrigeration meant we couldn't buy anything to take with us. It all looked delicious though the prices reflected the price expected of a high end deli in a tourist trap
