I was genuinely disappointed with the food offerings. I began by considering the Cornish pasties…read moreand I asked the lady behind the counter if they were made by the company to learn no, but she claimed off pat that they were made to Rick's recipe. I don't get it as this guy literally has a mini empire in Padstow, cafes, fish n chip sit it and take away, a cookery school, a coffee bar, a fish bar. There's nowt to stop him firing out tasty pasties by the score. So I thought no thanks matey if you can't be bothered then I'll not bother either. I did buy two bottles of beer labelled with Chalky his now deceased pooch but here again top dollar at £3.5 each and no discount for buying 6 or 12. There were lots of jars and tinned food too but least effort from Rick so no thanks chum I'll stick with M&S. it's some comfort to know he won't miss my trade.

There was a sign on the door saying they were being hosted by Rick's deli We were a little disappointed when there turned out to be no cooked food available - fish fried in beef dipping sounded exactly what we needed as a reward for our exertions. One of the cashiers was kind enough to recommend another place in town for fish and chips As a foodie, I was never going to leave without a browse round the deli although the lack of access to refrigeration meant we couldn't buy anything to take with us. It all looked delicious though the prices reflected the price expected of a high end deli in a tourist trap

The place is located at the working harbor, adjacent to the National Lobster Hatchery and--authentically if not attractively--with a view of the car park rather than the bay. Rick Stein is peculiarly ubiquitous in Padstow, with shops, restaurants and even accommodations. It's all very odd and almost Disney-ish, but we figured we should see what all the fuss is about. Glad we did! The fish & chips are a distinct blast from the past, in a good way: the cod was a thick, clean white slab like I haven't seen since the 1970's and both fish and chips are cooked in flavorful beef tallow, as is traditional. While the fish is spectacular and unprecedented, the chips were undistinguished and disappointing, though apparently exactly what the world expects them to be these days...everywhere the same. I prefer the more traditional version found on the quaint pleasure boat harbor-front of the town just a hundred meters away. More modern touches included a delightful spinach and watercress salad with an Asian dressing, and Rick Stein's gin and tonic, brewed up by local Tarquin's distillery using Stein's proprietary recipe that features the unusual flavors of anise and grapefruit peel.

The grilled fish is done in vegetable oil. Well priced and service is good (as long as you don't try and get in the door early!) Menu is simple but effective - everything you could want! Nice setting and free car park right outside. Gift shop next door - but don't be fooled - Rick has some batter mix there for £3 - you think their must be some special ingredients in it - but alas, just flour and anticaking agents - come on Rick - bit of a joke, aye?
