Took my bike in for a desperately needed tune up and picked it up yesterday. The brakes work perfectly (thank you!). New chain (excellent!). But as I'm riding today the gears seem to shift occasionally while I'm just pedaling, not shifting. I'm not a bike expert, but it probably shouldn't be doing that. Sorry, but I'm taking it somewhere else next time. The people are nice and the story of the shop is fun and all, but they don't seem to do a very good job of actually servicing a bike. I looked on their webpage to see what bikes were available. They did not offer details of their inventory so I drove to the store. I get to there and a man approaches me and asked, "How can I help you?" I said, "I'm looking for a new bike. Do you have any hybrids available?." He laughs, I say, "I'm not sure what's funny." He says, "I'm not sure if you're aware but there are no bikes." I tell him, "I checked online and it didn't tell me anything of your inventory so I thought I would come down to see what you have in the shop." He then says, "we have no bikes. My mother wanted to do me a favor and take my bike in to get a tube replaced because I didn't have the time to do it myself. She send it in last Friday. They call back saying the spoke needs to be replaced too and my mom tells them that's fine you can fix it, my daughter and I are going camping so we will pick it up Monday. Monday at 5pm, the bike isn't fixed and my mom had to run other errands. I also had to coach the same day and I was on the other side of town. So I come down there at 5:30pm to it still not fixed, just the spoke because he ripped the tube when replacing it. So for his mistake, which is common I get, but you had Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and all day Monday to fix it. Where's the time management. So dumb me paid just to get my bike back because I no longer felt comfortable leaving my bike any longer at a shop that needed two days to fix one wheel. What a waste of time and money. He refused any sort of a discount for the time it took to "repair" it. So I will no longer go there and I recommend no one else venture to them as well. Sad part of the story, when they were located on Main Street I got that very bike from them, and the service was so much more reliable and considerate back then. To brighten the story, across the street is Cafe 59. They don't fix bikes, but they have incredible food and drinks. Just an FYI :) read more

+500 points for their bargain basement with tons of used bikes. Just walk in and go ask to see the basement if you're shopping for a bike. You're bound to come across something you like. Everything from hybrids to mountain bikes to road bikes. I bought a used road bike here for $200 and it's served me well so far this summer. It's a hipster bike shop. Most of the employees I've talked with here have been very nice, but aside from their basement where I bought a bike...I haven't had any other services done here. read more

And so begins my new life by bike. Upon learning that my old gal, a '95 Toyota Camry Wagon, was in need of some serious repair in order to pass inspection, I made the decision to free myself of this automotive burden. My roommate, a life-long bicyclist, sent me to Rick's. After several visits, researching, learning and preparing myself for this life changing purchase, I cannot believe that this place only has three stars. What I AM certain of, is that Rick's Cycle Shop is NOT out to make a quick sale, but a long-term customer. On my first pop-in, Rick answered all of my questions and was happy to educate me in the time allowed with no pressure to buy. On my second visit, I met Jon who was equally willing to help me out, (and I know nothing about bikes). On visit #3, Jon demonstrated sincere dedication in aiding me with my purchase, finding the right fit for me and was sensitive to my budget. In the end, I came home today excited, with not only a new bike, but almost all of the accessories I feel I need. I will come back for fenders so, we shall see. But despite my lack of knowledge, I did not feel talked-down to in any way by anyone from Rick to Jon, to the other employees that I interacted with regarding the purchase of a helmet (at pick-up) or adjustments to my handlebar grips. I look forward to doing more business here as I need new accessories, tune-ups or repairs. read more

I went to Ricks and worked with a guy named Tristan to solve an issue I had been having. He was so helpful in the various things that I needed. I thought I needed a new stem to reduce the reach with my handlebar situation. He talked me into getting touring style handlebars, which in the long run will be better for my back. If you are looking for rude and lousy customer service paired with incompetent technical service, then Ricks Cycle Shop is your kindof place. After 8 consistently craptastic, rude, condescending visits to Ricks Cycle, I am fairly certain that I can adequately assess this... ahem... "business" (You would have think that I would have learned my lesson after my first experience, but I am a sucker for pain and punishment). Upon moving to Albuquerque, NM, I brought my Canndondale into one of the local bike shops for a service. They could not believe that another bike shop (Ricks Cycle) had recently serviced my bike! The rear hub was completely trashed and this type of mechanical failure does not happen overnight. They estimated that the rear hub failed over 2 years ago, which means that Ricks serviced my bike twice without noticing this critical drivetrain failure. Lets talk about a past experience at Ricks: My crank was replaced under warranty. I pedaled up Linwood Avenue and made it as far as Gates Circle because the crank fell off. So, this necessitated me walking my bike back to Ricks. To add injury to insult, they blamed me for the crank falling off. Really?! And here is the kicker- they were too busy to adequately repair my crank because they were super busy and behind in repairs. Apparently, they do not understand the concept of making things right. This place is a never again. I recommend avoiding Ricks Cycle at all costs. Check out Northstar bikes on Eggert Road in Amherst. read more

Came to Buffalo to visit a friend for a week. I had no mode of transportation since his bike was stolen shortly after he moved in to a new apartment. Went to Rick's to rent a ride for the week. Lo and behold I am perusing their selection of used bikes and there is my friend's bike. I tried to rent it and even buy it. No such luck, even after I explained to the gentleman that was helping me that it was in fact stolen. Long story short, I left the shop, called the police, and eventually the bike was returned to its rightful owner. Can't believe the lack of morality in some people. My advice is don't patronize a shop that buys and sells stolen property! Not cool, Rick! Not cool! read more

So I been inspired by Buffalo's surge in bike culture and decided to purchase a used bike on Craigslist. It was inexpensive but runs great and has the vintage flair. By no means am I even close to being an expert. I just knew I needed a helmet and a lock. Went in and although I was helped by a very knowledgeable person, it was as though he was looking down on me for not knowing certain things about my brand new to me bike. I literally had it for less than an hour. I know in a newbie which is probably annoying to a know it all, but show a little compassion on someone trying a new hobby. Ended up spending $70, with no receipt mind you. I don't mind spending a few extra bones to support a local place but a little kindness with my customer service would have made me a repeat customer. Now, I may just take my business elsewhere for the future. read more

Still don't know if it's Rick or Rick's (contradictory info on website), but either way, I was not impressed. I've been to enough bike shops to know that you often get very aloof service, but this place was the most aloof I've seen. I was looking for used bikes. They have a large selection, but I couldn't get a staff person to help me at all. They were milling around doing their own thing and not acknowledging the customer. I would understand if I got a "Hi, be with you soon," but we received no greeting. I will not be returning unless I'm desperate. read more

I fell off my bike today. I took what the firemen of Block Island once saw and named, "a digger." That time it was right off the ferry. Right in front of the firehouse. I hit some dirt and went over the handlebars. It was mortifying and memorable. After that, about 10 years ago, I lost my nerve and didn't ride a bike again until like, now. Today was mostly mortifying and disorienting. I rode into the above ground tracks of the metro. I'm a spas. That said, the good men of Rick's Cycle Shop fixed my bike and my spirits up. I wobbled in with my bike and a nice guy who also works at a community bike shop straightened my handlebars and helped me outfit the bike with a basket, lights and a mirror so I would like it again. While I waited a reggae band's cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon played. I liked it, and I hate Pink Floyd. Like I said, I'm disoriented, but I am going to buy that band's cover of Sgt. I live in Chicago, and thought it might be cheaper to buy a "new" used bike in Buffalo, my hometown. I bought an amazing 3 speed cruiser from here about 10 years ago, and wanted to try the shop again. I walked into Rick's and met Jon, who talked to me about their new bike selection, and then described some of the used bikes downstairs that might fit me well. He was extremely knowledgable, super personable, and I never felt pressured. Some people said this shop was disorganized, but Jon sent my brother and I downstairs to look at the bikes he thought I'd like, and knew exactly which row and about how far down the bike was located. I had a really great experience here, spent less than I thought, and they attached all the extras I purchased for low cost (nice bonus.) Jon also took the time to make sure I understood the parts of my bike, which I really greatly appreciated. I highly recommend Rick's! read more

Great bunch of friendly, entertaining guys. HUGE selection of bicycles. FREE air to pump up your tubes ( less than 90psi) at the entrance inside. It's always crowded here. They turn over bikes quickly. I've never seen Campus Wheel works crowded. hmmm? there's only ever one to five people in that place, not counting the staff who don't seem to know much about bikes, except for maybe one guy. I have taken many people here who always comes out with a new used bike or their own well tuned. I see all these comments about the name? who cares, google it, what comes up? the same place every time. read more

There's a great selection of new and used bikes, looking like they range from $100 to a few thousand dollars, so you're sure to find something to suit your needs. I went in to grab a bike with no experience doing so, but left feeling confident that I had a great bike and everything else I needed to maintain it and be safe. My husband and I go to both Rick's and Campus for our bicycle needs. My husband is the super serious cyclist of the two of us. He collects and does serious cycling, fixes bikes on his own etc... He likes both places. As an occasional cyclist, meaning I commute with my bike, but I don't do 100 mile rides yet I am working up to it, I don't find them to be snooty or anything. I went in on my own a couple of times to buy a U lock and to drop off my bike for a tune up. The person who did help me (taller guy) did correct me and call the U lock I guess by its correct name but I don't think he meant it as a snobbish thing, its just what its called. He did help me, but left me to my own devices to pick one. Tune up was fine, no problems. This place satisfies my need from them as an occasional cyclist. read more

Maybe I was just not paying attention but I wasn't too put off by the attitude by any of the employees. however I always feel like a noob in a bike shop and did sort of feel judged, but that is likely my own nutty perception. My fiance and I dropped our bikes off to get tuned up for the season. It's really crowded in there so it's annoying to bring in your bike and stand around. You are perpetually in someone's way. But the turnaround was pretty quick for the beginning of the season (2 days) and it was reasonable ($40) and they wrapped my fiances handlebars for the cost of the tape. My ride feels good as new so now I'm ready to take on the open road! read more

This place is great. I went in with a hundred questions regarding bikes. Tom took the time and walked through each of my questions. He asked me what I was looking for, price range and brought out a few bikes for me to test ride. Got a bike i am very happy with that was on sale. Also pointed me in the right direction of a helmet, and pump. He gave me a free water bottle which was nice touch. Very good experience and I would recommend this place to anyone. This place is for bike enthusiasts and they were real blunt with customers they considered were likely to take advantage of them. But my experience was very good. I've been doing business with Rick's Cycle Shop for years and I have come to know Tom enough to appreciate his years of experience and knowledge base on all things bikes. I bought a Raleigh SC 200 several years ago and just this past 2 weeks, I had to have a new rear wheel replaced because of a freak accident. Tom and John took care of me in short order and asked if I wanted my rear brake adjusted for which I said yes (I could have done it myself but why not get it done while the bike was at the shop and have it done right.) Rick was recommended to me by a friend on arrival to Buffalo. I read some of the reviews here and was a bit concerned. I am not sure what shop these people went to, but it clearly wasn't Rick's. I walked in with my $75 bike swap bike from the mid-80s and was immediately helped by a very friendly and helpful member of the staff. The repair staff was quick to determine what work needed to be done. I received a follow-up call later explaining the part wasn't available, to see if I was ok with a part from a used bike. A used part wasn't available and my bike was finished two days before the original estimate. Now I have my bike and it works better than it has ever worked, thanks to their once over tune-up in addition to the other work. The cost was very reasonable and they combined work to lower the costs for me. I would DEFINITELY recommend this bike shop. I am so used to bike shops where you walk in without @$3500 bike they done even look your way. What a change of pace. read more

I had my bike serviced here. Whoa big mistake. I was told to fix the shifter would cost me $40. Ok, that's fair. I agreed on the price. My bike was ready the next day. Terrific, I thought. "that'll be $70, sir" WTF!?! Without asking me, without calling me, they took it upon themselves to fix other things we'd never agreed on. The rear brake for instance. I hadn't had any problem with it but their service guru seemed to think there was a problem and proceeded to "fix" it without my permission. I ended up talking to the manager/owner who was polite but not apologetic. And while he offered me a $20 coupon he didn't refund my money or admit his employee's behavior was either lazy, greedy or duplicitous. I'd like to say I've had better luck with other bike stores since moving to buffalo but the kids at Campus Wheelworks treat their shop like a clubhouse. The emphasis is on hanging out and comparing tattoos, not servicing customers in a timely manner and at an affordable price. If any knows an honest, reliable and reasonably priced bike store in the elmwood village area I'd love to hear about it. read more

We felt manipulated by the owner Thomas Azzarella. His prices are inconsistent. We were quoted one price and once we received the invoice the service was $25 instead of the initial quote of $5. He replaced brake cables, which I got for $3 at another local bike shop. Rick's was trying to charge $15. His bike renting rates are unreasonable. His customer service skills are horrific. I will never patronize this business. It doesn't make sense when there is a decent alternative on Elmwood. read more

I like this place but a bit disturbed to know that they may be part of a theft ring. Selling stolen property is just wrong. I bought a new bike here about 5 years ago and love the bike and loved the service. I'm back again to buy a new bike and the service was still good. Not everyone can afford a new bike and and like me, not everyone likes the new bikes (I love the vintage 60's-80's ones). This is why Rick's is such a unique bike shop here in Buffalo. Their basement is AWESOME. Filled with all kinds of bikes from all kinds of timeframes. Whenever I need some vintage parts....they are my first stop. You may or may not buy a bike here but you SHOULD at least check out what they have before buying anywhere else. read more

I bought a second-hand crossover (street/mountain) bike + lock and cable + helmet + panniers and bike rack at Rick's Cycle Shop last weekend. It was a fair deal (not crazy-good, but reasonable) and I received very good customer service -- I did not want to look at every bike and accessory in the store, so I just rattled off my requirements and the person helping me grabbed the appropriate thing for my needs. My nit (and even this turns out to be a "plus" about the business) was that I said I wanted to use my bike for commuting and grocery shopping but the panniers that the guy grabbed off the shelf were not at all up to the task I described: though I did not at all stuff them with groceries, they split (one seam and one pressure point) in their first use. Further, though my bike was given a tune up before I left the store, the Rick's bike mechanic dude left the handlebar joint too loose -- it skewed off to the side after I started off in the wrong gear and I had to wrestle it back into position to correct this and use it. The following day I contacted the store and explained what happened and they said that they'd issue a refund on the panniers and tighten the loose handlebar gizmo -- and when I went into the store, they delivered on what they'd promised. Of course, a purchasing experience with zero problems is what we aspire to have, and I did not get that. But I think it is also useful to see how a business responds when things go wrong, and these guys passed that particular test with flying colors. read more

Rick's is a decent store, product-wise, and their selection of used bikes is pretty spectacular. But few things irritate me more than dudes at bike shops acting like I don't know what I'm talking about. I've been commuting by bike for nearly a decade now, so you'd think when I tell someone that I have a Trek road bike, they'd trust me instead of insisting I mean hybrid. If not the first or second time, then at least by the third. I shouldn't have to bring my bike into the store to purchase break pads just so you believe me when I tell you what I need. read more
