When I was younger up through my early to mid 20's I rode a bicycle very often. My bikes were never bought here, but whenever it needed a fix or tune-up, my family and I would always bring it here. After more than a decade away (beyond a handful of short rentals), I finally made the decision to get back into riding. I knew a lot had changed with bicycles since the last time I was a regular rider and did a bit of research beforehand so I could have a general idea of what I was getting into. From the very start, my experience with Dave truly has been extraordinary, going above and beyond above and beyond. He agreed that I had a very general idea toward what I wanted, and in terms of more specific styles that fit my needs he showed and let me give a good test ride on 3 different models. I made my decision on which style I liked the most, and he gave me a card with the model info and style (I'm a "fitness hybrid" guy) and actually encouraged me to shop around and try out a few other brands of fitness hybrids to see and feel what felt most natural, emphasizing if it doesn't feel quite right, you won't ride as much. After going to a few more shops and testing (in a much more limited capcity) a flew more bikes, I made the decision that the Trek FX 1 I tried out from here was the one to buy, as it felt the most like me. Along with my purchase, a water bottle and mount were included, and a discount offered for the next few months toward any accessories I might need (including the helmet I got). Dave again provided amazing customer service, letting me know that if I had any questions about the bike, or if I felt I needed a new seat (which a couple stores actually tried to push from the jump) after a couple weeks to go back and I could test out any if needed. He also said in around a couple months break in period they would give the bike a good inspection for free to make sure everything is still in good order. When you want personal service from experts who live, ride and compete using the products they sell, you want to deal with a locally-owned business with a proven reputation. Handlebars is that business. Peter and Chris are exceptional. If you want something you won't benefit from, they'll tell you. If they don't have what you need, they'll get it for you. If they can't get you what you want, they'll advise you where to find it. If what you've got is worn, they'll fix it. One problem for them, they sold me a Trek 4000 that has lasted me going on 20 years. Their products are built to last. But with all the recent options for group riding activities, from Slow Roll Buffalo to Blues and Bikes (which Handlebars supports) I think I'll be looking for an upgrade soon. read more

I've been in the market for a new hybrid bike for a while now. At the end of last summer I ventured to Handlebars and unfortunately they were closed. In a pinch, my friend and I went to Bert's instead. BOO! The staff was so unhelpful... I asked the differences between two bikes, and the young hipster worker literally said "Hmm I don't know"... So that was a bust. Now that the weather is finally breaking, I headed back to Handlebars. I was in the market for a Giant, and was disappointed when entering to hear that they no longer carry Giant- but only their sister brand Trek. The worker was EXTREMELY informative however, even gave my friend and I a hands-on demo of how to remove the tire on her bike and re attach it. When he went to get a sample model of the Trek I was most interested in, he came back with great news. They had ONE Giant left in the basement from their inventory... and would knock the price down for me as it was the last one and they wanted to get rid of it. It was a model higher than what I really needed, but he was quick to explain the different features to me and it turned out to be a great deal for the price he offered me. I couldn't get enough of the good feels while in Handlebars. The staff REALLY know their stuff and I can't wait to pick up my new wheels on Friday! read more

I love this bike shop. This is the place to go if you want your bike fixed right. They will generally take the time to look at your bike right away if it's simple and they are very knowledgeable. I think this shop is fantastic, but full disclosure, I have not shopped for or purchased a bike here. I have been here multiple times for purchases of supplies (water bottles, cages, grip tape, tires, gloves, etc), and have had multiple bikes tuned multiple times. I have always been very happy with the service. If anything, I find their staff to be... I mean this nicely and affectionately... 'bike dorks'. They are knowledgeable and great about talking about bikes and rides and routes. While I have found OTHER bike shops to have very condescending staff, I find the Handlebars crew always encouraging, pleased to welcome and help cyclists (and bikes) of any level. read more

I haven't even had my bike fully serviced yet, but I already have had such a great experience with this shop. I brought my bike in because the gears were skipping. Dave took a look at it right away, worked his magic, and then had me test it out around the neighborhood. Just after that everything was running much smoother. I left my bike with them for a derailleur adjustment and am sure that I will have many more nice things to say after pick-up, but so far I am very impressed! read more

I've gone in here a few times, and I am feeling pretty mixed about this place. On the one hand, they have one of the best locations for actually trying a bicycle out, and I was able to test ride the bike I was interested in for a good test. They allow you to go around the neighborhood and not just inside the store or their parking lot. On the other hand, I'd best describe their customer service as indifferent. I'm totally cool with low pressure environments, but all of the times I've come in to ask questions, I just got the impression that I was a little burdensome to the staff. I suspect they do a lot of business with their higher-end brand customers, and perhaps are less interested in the low-end commuter types like me. Their overall selection of accessories is pretty okay, consisting mainly of manufacturer accessories. I have no current experience with their repair shop. read more

Honest, friendly service. Staff is very knowledgeable and always gives money off when you buy various items all together. Have a great selection of medium to high priced bikes. When purchasing parts, they allow you to return parts for different sizes if its not what you need. Always enthusiastic about giving advice and recommendations. Lots of high end merch that you wouldnt expect to find on a random street in Kenmore. They are true cycling enthusiasts at handlebars, and are not just looking to get commissions ( like at Bert's). I'm kind of partial, because phoning just about every bike shop in WNY on a Sunday, they were the only place that had the exact chain lube I was looking for. This was my first visit, and it looked *much* bigger on the inside than it does from the street. I perform my own bike service and the rep (Eric, perhaps) talked me out of getting a more elaborate part than I needed. It made sense. Out of the corner of my eye I saw him casually measure the new part I was getting with a micrometer. What a relief that he was making sure I didn't have to come back the following day, since they were closing. He took his time with me, and did not have that "know-it-all" vibe that's all-too-common in bike shops. When I asked about something they didn't carry, he mentioned a couple of local competitors that he though might have it in-stock. Whoa. I'm not particularly a Trek fan-boy but thought only one shop in the area carried their product. Not true, since (we'll call him Eric) tells me these guys have had it for decades. I brought my bike in twice for the same flat tire. They fixed it the second time for free, but it went flat again. I've only been riding for a year so I trusted the "experts" in a highly rated bike shop to know how to properly fix the problem. They didn't. My husband and I had our bikes in for routine maintenance. I did not ride my bike before leaving as I thought they were a reputable repair shop. We had not issue leaving it for a week for they were busy. My bike is in worst shape than when I took it. My brake rubbing on my front left tire. My handlebars slipped very forward on my first ride out. We spent $69.00 for routine maintenance per bike and mine is unsafe to ride. Dissatisfied with service and don't want to deal with their attitude. Steer clear of this repair shop. I agree with a previous review- they do have an elitist attitude. read more

They are a good shop, but I've always felt they're too busy and I've never experienced the type of attention or good prices other reviewers speak of. I get around via bike and I use it everyday so it is disappointing that they can never get to even minor repairs for a week or so. Where I go is not a specialty shop but I don't have the 7-10 days to wait for Handlebars. I've called and asked nicely if a minor adjustment could be done to get me on the road that day and no deal. I will give the owner credit for replying to an email about the call but by then the work was done by someone else. Recently I had an accident and their wait time was four days for an estimate. I went to Tom's and they had lots of people in there but still did it in less than an hour. By the way, despite what this profile says, Handlebars does not rent bikes. read more

Every time both myself and my family was taken care of. No upsell. I was asked questions about what kind of riding I do and what might suit me well. I brought my bicycle here for a tune up specifically because one of the reviews stated that they went above and beyond. Sadly I did not have this experience. I brought in my beach cruiser for a serious tuneup. It had been left outside last winter and needed some work. For $80, they didn't even wipe the bike down. Both brake cables were replaced however the back brake was stiff and sticking and not really working. Clearly they had not taken a test drive on this bike before calling me to pick it up. I brought the bike back to see if there was anything they could do and the indifference, lack of concern I received from the owner was appalling. If your bike needs repair, take it somewhere else. The brakes are so bad I have to take it somewhere else. read more

I could see right away they had the brand, but not the bike I was specifically looking for. When someone finally got around to helping me... (I was the only customer in the store) The girl could barely answer my questions before trying to walk away. I asked about the model I researched on line and she said they don't have that one... started to walk away... um... could you order it if I wanted it? The Handle Bars Bike shop is outstanding!! I was helped by Brenton, a very knowledgeable man, he was very helpful. I dropped off two bikes that hadn't been ridden in approximately 5 to 10 years. He explained what they would need and what all they would check over. Picked up the bikes in 4 days and they look brain new. Brenton cleaned some surface rust off the fenders making them shine.
