Rich's is my favorite store. Since i started shopping here i never go anywhere else to buy deli items. Good selection ofthe basics. Check out their soups - i bring them for lunch at work and they are only $1.25. Great when you are on a budget. Holy eastern-European mindf*ck, Batman. The wife and I were in the neighborhood checking out a potential home and decided to walk the area to see what's around. We initially walked by Rich's, but on our return, the curiosity got to us. Admittedly, we were expecting your typical, semi-dumpy neighborhood convenience store. Instead we found a bustling market filled with Polish, Lithuanian, and Ukrainian specialties. There is a full deli, a decent produce section and your other staples scattered throughout the deceptively large store. We were both hungover and not wanting to deal with much, but the energy and experience at Rich's were too much to pass up. The kabonosy, pasztet, gypsy sausage, smoked meats and fish in general, meats (mostly pork products duh,) soups and soup starters, produce, cheese, condiments (northeastern european like Hochland brand goat cheese products and slavic mustards,) polish vodkas and liqueurs make this place worth the couple dollars spent on a used book store variety Ukrainian or Polish Berlitz handbook. Ok, so I agree too. I was fascinated with the neighborhood when I moved here, but it took me a while to discover Rich's because you would never know how much it held from the exterior. I am still to intimidated to order at the deli counter since there is usually a line and they are all speaking what I assume is Ukrainian. What I HAVE discovered is that in the fall they had the best tasting mangos I have ever eaten. I love their chocolate - it is so hard to find good dark chocolate in this country, and they have a massive block of smooth dark for just over a dollar. Yum. I also love their random assortment of juices in the back corner. My favorite is the cherry. Milk is cheap, fresh produce is good. I haven't been a big fan of their bread, but I love trying out the patries and found the poppyseed cake strangely addicting! They have a huge supply of Eastern European cheeses and yogurts, open bins of pickles, sourkraut, and something else I can't remember at the moment. Behind the check out counter is a huge shelf of alcohol, which I'm sure holds some great finds. Any other discoveries? read more

I love this place! Honestly, if I read Polish I'd never shop anywhere else; it's got all the essentials - a great produce section, a deli, bakery, home needs - and it's much cheaper than Dominick's. I checked it out when I moved into the neighborhood and my Polish-Jew ancestry immediately informed me that I needed to be getting some pierogis and borscht. I'm always a little awkward because I don't speak Polish or Ukrainian and I feel a little intrusive, but I don't need deli meat (vegetarian!) and while I might be the odd one out, I can still buy everything. I was so excited to find this place so close to where I live! Now I can get my fill of beet salad, herring, sprats, and pelmini anytime I desire. :D This place looks pretty tiny and nondescript from the outside. I never would have realized it was an Eastern European grocery store if I hadn't Yelped " Russian grocery". But once you get inside, it's larger than it seems, and it has a great grocery and alcohol selection - they carry a number of delicious imported beers. Smallish produce section but large sausage/meat/cheese deli selection. They also have lots of canned/jarred herring and fish, mustards, pre-made salads, bread, you name it. It's kind of cramped inside and was pretty busy for a Monday at 1 p.m. I would imagine that it's a madhouse on the weekends, so beware! I'll definitely be back on a regular basis! read more

Places like this make me want to move to Chicago, stat. I love this place! I love the customers, the employees, the bakery and meat selection, and the eastern European refrigerated entrees that I wanted to put in my 3.5oz Ziploc bag and fly back to Atlanta =( Whine. Stammered my way into Rich's Deli based solely on the fact it said delicatessen in full writing and knowing nothing about the place or Polishness i was about to enter. What an amazing experience. i have never been to Poland, but I am quite sure that places like Rich's are the norm, including the guy outside the door pedaling his items that the flea-market rejected. I saw him haggle with multiple different people in what can only be described as a spectacle and actually sell his crapwares to fully compliant individuals that seemed happy to throw their hard earned money away. Perhaps part of the culture I have yet to appreciate. Stepping inside, it became apparent, these are the smells accustomed to a real deli with real butchering taking place and aromatic flavors being developed. Given that I was in it for lunch, I headed back to the deli, with 3 lovely eastern european women waiting happily to help me out. First thing I noticed, HEADCHEESE, and lots of it, i counted at least 8 or more varieties (ie legit). While i do not like it, i appreciate the process,and more importantly, it establishes Rich's deli as a no B.S., we don't care if we are in America, this is our food and we are proud to serve our people kinda place. It took a minute or two to align our minds, but the forces that be came together and we managed to use hand and facial gestures to impart that I wanted a turkey and cheese sandwich. Of course, grabbing the semi-english speaking girl from the back helped a lot. While they heaped freshly sliced turkey, cheese, lettuce, and mayo onto a huge bun (only $3.36 and huge + delicious) I walked around the place and took in the sights and smells of what i can only presume to be eastern europe. Polish seemed to be the only language being spoken (or at least i think it was Polish, sorry if I am wrong on that one) and I was definitely the only non Eastern-European around. I can certainly confirm J.J.'s review, hold your ground in line (if that's what you call it, more like a free for all) or be taken out and steer clear of the HUGE polish beers. The regular ones are damn good, especially if you like polish smoke beers. The produce also not a good deal and not always fresh. If you're not a Pole, you should probably act like me, better seen than heard, as they don't likely give a damn what you think about the way they roll. The other amazing deal I found (which i thought was a secret until I realized Kent S. is on the prowl) is the amazing RANDOM little cheese and meat boxes. All of the butt ends and little unclaimed parts of cheese and meat are ever so kindly chucked into a box and offered for WHAAAAAAA.......ONLY $2.17, but there is 1.5 lbs of cheese in there, really?, really?, OH YES REALLY! yet another great reason to justify wine and cheese for dinner. Rich's cant be beaten for value, and the people-watching is pretty fantastic too, just don't get caught staring as some of the dudes were massive euro bodybuilder types and might be ready to rumble on your non-Polish English speaking ass. Get some Rich's deli and pick up a bottle of cheap designer imposter cologne outside to go for quick Polish flare read more

There's so much here that it deserves more than one visit. On my first, I picked up a couple of soups to go and some Ukrainian and Polish beers, all for under ten bucks. The soups were excellent with a number of types from which to choose, as are the beers. Can't wait to go back and fill my fridge again. I highly recommend a visit. read more

I love that Rich's is right down the street! It is such a great value. Some of my favorite things about the store are the produce section, the cheap beer and liquor, the fresh breads, all the dairy products, and I am excited about tying the chocolates. I am also really enjoying experimenting with the new things I am finding there. Fantastic Polish store! This place feels like Martusia's in Grodzisk Mazowieki. Great homemade soup, fresh pierogi, and a great beer selection all within walking distance of my place. Amazing! The homemade soups for under $2 are reason enough to visit this little treasure trove, but then the questionable buckets of homemade pickles in the back insist you become a regular. I have so many freakin little tuber-wares from eating the hell out of the soup all winter. And my husband is convinced my sodium is sky rocketing because of my intense pickle addiction. I eat like 5 a day! This place is truly great! Definitely, check out the deli. They have all sorts of polish looking meats if that is your thing. I'm more preoccupied with the home made peirogies and the potato pan cakes, but I bought my husbands polish step-dad some sausages and he certainly enjoyed them. But you should beware, this place is serious Eastern European. They may be accustom to all the hipsters with their reusable grocery bags and while they may like their money they don't waste their time on pleasantries. Don't expect any casual grins from other customers who are Eastern European serious about grocery shopping. And don't bother asking the counter gal for a straw...she doesn't know what it is. I just visited this deli for the first time today and I am so glad I found it! After Three Sisters Delicatessen went out of business, I wondered where I would be able to purchase traditional Russian food. This Ukrainian deli is even better! It is much bigger and looks so much like the grocery stores in Russia. Today I bought sausage, pelmeni, bread, dried fish, tea and cookies. I definitely will be back. I just wish it was closer. I like this place, and not only because it's a block from my apartment. They have a good produce section with generally good prices. They have a bunch of Ukrainian food in packages with fun writing all over them. They have borscht and cheap cheese at the deli. They have sunflower halva and interesting-looking meats. They have brusk cashiers who are, well, efficient anyway, and always interestingly dressed (jean jackets are so hot right now) and equally dour-looking. Ooo, and there are these little triangular multi-grain rolls that are $.75 and worth every penny. read more

love Rich's deli. everything here is so cheap, and so delicious. i actually take food from here back to my polish friends in michigan and they love it. i really don't know what it is, but there are these like pork meatballs in a mushroom gravy. the container says "pork chops in sauce". i don't care what it says, it is fabulous. their baked goods are pretty delicious, and the counter girls usually have some funny comments up their sleeves. they have a pretty decent produce selection too, and all of it seems fresh and is also really cheap. read more

Some of the ladies who work in the deli can be incredibly rude. I can understand Ukrainian and some of the things they say about the American customers can be pretty bad. To be honest, they can be pretty rude to their eastern European customers too. The old manager was a great guy and very attentive to the customers but they have a new manager now and he is terrible. I explained how bad the service was and he just walked away, never to return or be found again. It's a shame how quickly this store has gone downhill. Fortunately there are other choices. read more

Visited Chitown for first time over Thanksgiving. Grew up with a Polish mother, so Rich's Deli was a no brainer. Loved everything! Rye bread cannot be beat. Also pastries were awesome.Next time in Chi I will go back. We don't get this in Tucson. read more

I used to live down the street from this polish grocery store and frequented it at least 3 times a week. They have a whole side of an aisle dedicated to european chocolates, it's great! The beer selection is actually pretty outstanding too. The produce is all very fresh. They have a good selection of fresh meats. If you are into cabbage they have 3 barrels of different mixtures. The ladies at the checkout stands are usually friendly in their loud ukrainian outfits. Cheeses are great also. Everything is reasonably priced also. I have been back there a few times since I have moved to a new neighborhood because i miss it so. read more

Another one of my neighborhood stores I can't seem to live without. Granted, I used to get a lot more out of Rich's when I used to eat meat, as the deli counter is overflowing with all kinds of encased and often smoked meats, but I still go there for cheese, some produce (they usually have ridiculously cheap vine-ripened tomatoes) and other Polish goodies, like beets, pickles, herring, chocolates and fresh bread. This is a good grocer for certain items, particularly Eastern European foods. The sausages and prepared foods selections up front are both good and cheap. The grocery options, however, are limited, and there are frequently long wait times to be served at the deli counter. The back of the store has some strange, but tasty options, like pickles in a barrel and a tray of fish. read more
