    Empanadas

Tango Sur is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago and I missed their empanadas! I decided to go to El Mercado today to grab a few of those empanadas. They have fried and baked empanadas with many fillings to choose from like: ham & cheese, eggplant, corn, spinach & ricotta, chicken, beef and sweet beef. I bought one fried corn, one fried spinach and ricotta and two fried sweet beef empanadas. They were warm, freshly made and super delicious! If you're in the area check out El Mercado and Tango Sur!

I grew up with an Argentinian father and everything in this store reminds me of the treats and goodies I love from my childhood. Not only that, but the cuts of meat are amazing. This is the only place where I can get real Asado de Tira. The chorizo, which I found out they make there, is also amazing. If you're looking for a snack, their empanadas and alfajores are the best in the city. This is where I get all of my foods that I would have back home. Also, the people are always super nice and friendly. It is definitely my favorite little shop

This is the best kept/not really kept secret on Southport... There was a period of time where there were empanadas every way you turned in the neighborhood-- but as they say, only the strong survive. Cash only- best empanadas in the city. Without a doubt. Made fresh daily. This place is the move. Also if you're Argentinian and feeling homesick, you'll be right back in the motherland the second you step through the door. Love this spot so much.

If you are looking for the best Argentinian empanadas in the city look no further. This tiny grocery store/meat market has empanadas for sale up in the front. Our kids love fried steak. I am partial to the corn but all are light delicious and expertly fried. Make sure you bring cash. No credit cards accepted

Does this store sell Picanha? And if so, how much per pound? Thanks

Yes, they have the traditional picanha. But it is better to call and ask about the price. Last time I've paid 25 usd for 2lbs.

How much is a bag of Yerba mate? Do they offer credit or cash?

Hello, Thanks for your inquiry. We have several brands of Yerba mate in different sized packages. prices can vary from $6 to $15 depending. They do not accept credit cards at El mercado. I hope this answers your questions to your satisfaction.… Read more

For example with my mussels, rather than this large chunk of baguette, I wouldn't preferred it pre-sliced. We went on a busy Saturday night and it was popping in here for sure. However because it was so busy, my table ended up being neglected and our waitress was impossible to flag down. In terms of vibes, it seems like a pretty cool place to be. I liked the chairs and then the little booths seem like a fun time. I was also a big fan of the bathroom sink. Overall, Publican was a fine time, and even better time if you're looking for meat forward dishes.

Very unassuming, considering it's just your good ol' neighborhood butcher shop / market by day. Off the bat you can tell they carry clean, wholesome products. The shelves and fridges are stacked with the likes of fresh meat cuts, house-made sauces, cheese, jams, pickled goods... the list goes on. I can only imagine their deli sandwich are incredible. I'll have to return to order from their regular cafe next time I'm in town. The event however, wow very well done and the menu was stacked. Their sweet staff kept bringing out family-style dishes and I didn't have a single bite that wasn't delicious. From the butcher's steak to the mussels and everything in between. Oh and the night finished with some kind of apple/cranberry pot pie situation. Wow. Oh and plenty of wine and cocktail options here too! Like plentyyyy. Keeping this place on my radar for when I'm next in the city. Thanks for having us!

When our friend arrived to pick up our order, it still wasn't ready (35 minutes after the fact). That's when we learned they didn't have one of the sandwiches. They were also out of potato salad. It was noon on a Friday. How were they out of so many things and how could they not have called and told us immediately? One friend had nothing to eat for lunch and, due to their delays, we couldn't go elsewhere. One person got a Reuben. It was fine not a lot of meat. I had pastrami. Also very little meat (I don't even like meat and I'm not a big eater but it was like ?!). Totally dry. Not grilled, no cheese, no condiments. Looked nothing like their picture in the paper. The coleslaw was TERRIBLE and inedible. Do not order. You can see from my other reviews that I rarely leave bad reviews. This place is not cheap. My sandwich was like $17. It's a joke (see pic). They skimp on meat when they are called a meat place. They are out of everything. Don't care about customers not getting what they ordered. Definitely would not go here again.

This is the perfect size for making mohinga (Burmese catfish soup). They also have a fish service counter if you need them to cut it into smaller pieces. They have nice big sturdy plastic bags that can fit the whole fish. They have separate service counters for chicken, fish, and beef/pork which is helpful to reduce cross contamination. It's super cold so make sure you bring a down jacket and beanie! The service line sometimes takes a bit of time so just be aware of that. There are plenty of other meat offerings like whole chicken, pork, sausage, beef, etc. All of them look really fresh and very competitive pricing. There's also a grocery store section where you can buy fresh vegetables, spices, and even baked goods like paczkis. The Bavarian cream paczki was delicious and not too sweet. There's also bulk frozen foods like fries and jalapeno poppers (if I remember correctly). Finding a whole catfish in Chicago can be difficult and I'm glad I can always trust Peoria packing for my catfish needs. The whole 2 lb catfish was only $6, incredible deal! The parking lot is decently sized, on a busy day like Christmas or Thanksgiving you can drive further near where the trucks are parked and park along the fence. For special holiday hours they were responsive both through Instagram DM and phone calls to confirm their hours! Really great service. They recently moved to this new location in October 2025. It used to be near Fulton Market in West Loop. Different location but same great service and item selection, probably more spacious too.
