We are big empanada fans!! And I mean Big fans, anything encased in a crispy, fried/baked dough is an automatic lovable treat for me. I know empanadas originated in Spain and they spread the art of making these handheld pies to the Philippines, Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, and yes, Argentina. We are also big fans of Argentinian style empanadas and we were so happy to discover El Mercado on Yelp!! They have quite a variety and we ordered a healthy bunch and got a small tub of the chimichurri sauce. Everything was excellent and the spinach and beef empanadas rose above the rest. :) we decided to have an Alfajor cookie sandwich filled with dulce de leche (I'll have to have this with an espresso next time). Check out the store, get some fine steaks, have a coffee, soak it all in without having to take a flight. :)

Very small and cute little shop on the corner. We stopped in just to browse the aisles and see what the market was all about. The front counter was filled rice balls, empanadas, and desserts. The woman at the front was very friendly and welcoming and helped us choose what we wanted to try. We landed on a sweet beef rice ball and a baked beef empanada. You could tell both were extremely fresh. This was my first rice ball like this and it was absolutely delicious! Full of flavor and packed with filling. Just one of these alone is almost like a handheld meal to fill you up. The baked empanada was also very good, but I have also never had an empanada that I haven't liked! I will definitely be stopping by again in the future to try other empanada flavors, as well as to try a some of the desserts that looked amazing!

Tango Sur is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago and I missed their empanadas! I decided to go to El Mercado today to grab a few of those empanadas. They have fried and baked empanadas with many fillings to choose from like: ham & cheese, eggplant, corn, spinach & ricotta, chicken, beef and sweet beef. I bought one fried corn, one fried spinach and ricotta and two fried sweet beef empanadas. They were warm, freshly made and super delicious! If you're in the area check out El Mercado and Tango Sur!

I grew up with an Argentinian father and everything in this store reminds me of the treats and goodies I love from my childhood. Not only that, but the cuts of meat are amazing. This is the only place where I can get real Asado de Tira. The chorizo, which I found out they make there, is also amazing. If you're looking for a snack, their empanadas and alfajores are the best in the city. This is where I get all of my foods that I would have back home. Also, the people are always super nice and friendly. It is definitely my favorite little shop

This is the best kept/not really kept secret on Southport... There was a period of time where there were empanadas every way you turned in the neighborhood-- but as they say, only the strong survive. Cash only- best empanadas in the city. Without a doubt. Made fresh daily. This place is the move. Also if you're Argentinian and feeling homesick, you'll be right back in the motherland the second you step through the door. Love this spot so much.

If you are looking for the best Argentinian empanadas in the city look no further. This tiny grocery store/meat market has empanadas for sale up in the front. Our kids love fried steak. I am partial to the corn but all are light delicious and expertly fried. Make sure you bring cash. No credit cards accepted

Does this store sell Picanha? And if so, how much per pound? Thanks

Yes, they have the traditional picanha. But it is better to call and ask about the price. Last time I've paid 25 usd for 2lbs.

How much is a bag of Yerba mate? Do they offer credit or cash?

Hello, Thanks for your inquiry. We have several brands of Yerba mate in different sized packages. prices can vary from $6 to $15 depending. They do not accept credit cards at El mercado. I hope this answers your questions to your satisfaction.…

We ordered the brisket, baked beans , and ribs. The brisket was juicy and tender. It was delicious!!!! I do wish it was more hot temperature wise. The brisket got cold quick. The ribs were my favorite! I wish we got three orders of them. They were perfectly tender filled with flavor. The char on them had the perfect smoky touch. The baked beans were delicious, they weren't too sweet but they were filled with a slight sweet note that I believe comes from the pork bits in it. So good! We enjoyed our food with the spicy barbecue sauce. I highly recommend that barbecue sauce! Total we spent for all that was around $55. To drink I had the bourbon sweet tea. The bartender was a bit rude. I feel like my drink could've been made with more love but it did the job. My drink costed about $17 I will be coming here again. There was ample enough seating. It's beautiful coming here at night. From the scenery inside you'll feel like you're in a movie. This experience fully blew my mind.

My favorite BBQ spot in Chicago!…read more I've been to Green Street Smoked Meats a few times now, and at this point I basically know what I'm getting before I even walk in. The prime sliced brisket is sooo good and the reason I keep coming back. It's smoky, juicy, super tender, and has that perfect fatty edge when you get a good slice. Sometimes they'll give you burnt ends, and wow, that is THE best piece. So much smoky, umami flavor packed into one bite. Definitely grab some sliced bread at the counter and a few cups of sauce. I love making little brisket sandwiches as I go and switching between the sauces. I tried the pulled pork sandwich once and really liked it! I also have to mention the elote and cornbread because I get them almost every time. The elote is creamy, a little spicy, and goes so well with all that smoky meat. The cornbread is sweet, soft, and perfect alongside the brisket. The service is always really nice. Everyone behind the counter is friendly while you're ordering and they're weighing out the meat, and then after you pay it's self-service. The whole setup is awesome. There's a big open indoor seating area that kind of reminds me of a food hall, with drinks, a coffee shop inside, and big screens where they sometimes have sports on. When the weather is nice, sitting outside is even better. That whole little area around Green Street with the other restaurants nearby has such a good vibe. I've been three different times and somehow my tray ends up looking almost identical every visit, which says everything you need to know. The brisket, elote, and cornbread have basically become my order at this point. Easily my go-to when I'm craving BBQ in Chicago.

We ordered the steak fajitas that came with beans, tortillas, and a little side of guac. The tortillas are apparently handmade and fresh, but I was a bigger fan of the corn ones instead of the flour ones. Both still very good though! We also got the shrimp skewers, and it paired so well with the free chips and salsa they gave us. I'm not a huge fan of bell peppers, but they made them so flavorful and tasty here that I couldn't stop eating them. The service was great with the servers and busboys since they brought out the chips/salsa right away and made sure our waters and drinks were always full. The only flaw I have for the place was that we waited nearly 40 minutes even though we put our name and phone number down in the front. The host claims she called us but might of dialed the wrong number, so it was a little bit of a bummer to have to come back and check in when we could have been seated earlier. However, one of the managers stopped by our table to ask how our food was and packed up our food for us at the end. The ambiance was very packed and lively in there! There were so many people celebrating birthdays that they would have signs and cake and even sing to you for your special day. It's BYOB, so there was a lot of people making their own drinks. Additionally, I'd make sure you have cash since it's a cash only place. I definitely want to come back again and recommend it to others; however, you better be prepared for delicious food and an exciting environment!!

We ordered the queso fundido, horchata, Sabina's tacos, and skewers which comes with three. Next time, I would skip the queso and horchata as the queso got hard quickly and the horchata seemed a little watered down. The Sabina's taco and skewers were delicious! The chicken was not as good the shrimp but we wanted to try it. I recommend getting the shrimp as I feel like it's juicier naturally. The tacos were flavorful and I loved having the refried beans and cheese in the taco. The restaurant is lots of fun as the staff are all busy, playing music, and making sure people get their birthday songs in. I highly recommend this spot as it's good and the vibes are fun.
