Taken from the restaurant part of grocery store

I was looking for a taqueria/grocery store combination since I was hungry after a long day of work. At the same time, I needed some fruit and eggs. I bookmarked this place some time ago, for it has good reviews on Yelp and was relatively close to Albany Park. After a short bus ride on Kimball, we got off at Belmont and walked a couple blocks west on Belmont. We then reached our destination. Behind the cash registers, there was a taqueria with some bar stools along the tiny dining room. Their menu features many of the Mexican quick-bite basics, such as tacos, tortas, burritos, and dinner combos. We had a pastor torta and chile relleno (stuffed poblano peppers with cheese), along with horchata and a bottle of lime jarritos. The total came to $12 for our dinner. Everything was made-to-order on their commercial grill. My pastor wasn't out-of-this-world amazing, but the meat was flavored well and portioned nicely. Speaking of great, cheap tortas, be sure that you check out the restaurant inside the Carniceria Guanajuato on Diversey at the Belmont Central neighborhood (hint, hint). Hubby also was satisfied with his chile relleno. Thus, our quest for some quick Mexican food was a success. Onto the grocery section, they carry a full line of groceries, even though the prices were just average comparing to other major Hispanic grocery stores in the city. We purchased some green seedless grapes ($0.99/lb; $1.89), a 4-lb bag of naval oranges ($3.49), and a dozen of jumbo eggs ($2.49). The total came to $8.05. While I wasn't impressed by their varieties and prices on their agricultural produce, their meat/seafood department appeared clean and had decent selections for a small-scaled neighborhood grocery store. Overall, if you're a resident in Avondale, it would definitely be a staple and perhaps a go-to place to pick up some simple, everyday grocery essentials. You can also find most of Mexican spices, beans, dairy products, pastries, juices, snacks, and alcohol here as well. You've got to love the real city. There's no absurd W*lm*rt that dictates where you shop.

Get some nachos and tacos while duping your groceries! The service is excellent and the food is complete perfection.

This is a decent place to stop for basic grocery needs. It is just a tad more pricey than a larger grocery store, but it is very conviennent for the neighborhood. The service at both the taqueria and registers is fast and efficient.

Most underrated spot for genuine tacos in all of Chicago! Highly recommend the steak tacos-they're surprisingly loaded despite being cheaper than most places!

The food is fresh, very tasty, and cooked to the order. Portions are generous for a reasonable price. First time I had the Enchilada en salsa verde and.... mmmm .... it was delicious. And the second time I ordered de Shrimp Fajita... ahhh... also it was a delish. Staff is very friendly, fast, and courteous. Dining area is small, but it worth to going there for a quick lunch. I honestly recommend this place. Next time I'm thinking to have the Chile Relleno.

Sometimes when I'm trying to find "international" ingredients at Mariano's or something it's hit or miss. I found what I needed here and it was a fairly quick trip--I don't think I was in store more than 20 minutes. The store is small, and very very crowded. Aisles are about as wide as a single person facing forward. This isn't a place where you're going to get a shopping cart down an aisle. The prices are good. I got a head of Napa cabbage for 99 cents per pound, and when I go to my neighborhood store it's usually closer to $3-4 or more per pound. Since it was such a steal I added hot and sour soup to my menu for the week. There's a parking lot at this store. It's one way, and you must enter from Archer. DO NOT enter the wrong way or you won't be able to park--the spaces are angled and there's not enough space between the building and the fencing to turn yourself around. There are only about ten parking spaces here so I'm sure it gets filled pretty quick, but when I was here I was the only car parked here. There's street parking which can be pretty chancy, but maybe I'm just speaking from the perspective of someone who was here on a busy Sunday in Chinatown.

A line for grocery store fried chicken? Absolute cinema. People have been recommending I get into fried chicken reviews, and I've resisted as I really don't want to get fat, but this was the perfect storm to start a grocery store fried chicken review journey. I got to the front in the line and felt like a fish out of water. I sheepishly asked the employees, Darius R and Damariea J, what the move was as it was my first time getting fried chicken from here. I thought they'd be annoyed, but they were so helpful and welcoming. "Today is actually wing bucket Friday! A whole bucket is normally $17.99 but today it's $9.99. I can give you some of everything so you can try, but the spicy wings are my favorite." Hell yeah. Darius was the MAN. I took my tissi and wing bucket to the UIC campus for consumption. The tissi was a brick and landed at a 6/10, which currently ranks it 71st out of 94 grocery store birds I've tried, but the fried chicken was INSANE. Darius wasn't lying, the spicy wings were next level. The best grocery store chicken I've ever had. Boomin the Publix fried chicken. Shoutout to the Darius' and Damariea's of the world. Good people. As always, I am looking for new fantastic restaurants, and stores to try out, and share with: family, friends, and on Yelp. As you walk in it seems like a common corner store, groceries in the front, meat towards the rear. When I walked to the back I had a pretty good hunch this would be a great one. The fresh smell, it was very clean, and the amazing eye catching signage. You could feel like you just walked into in a sweet little store in Mexico. When they handed me the food I ordered I knew was on the right track. When I took my first bites I smiled, and knew, I needed to share this place. I was intrigued by the Pozole Verde sign out front. I had never had it before, so I placed my order for that and zero regrets. It comes out in a quart container with a plastic wrapped foam tray with: chopped onions, cilantro, radish, shredded cabbage, and mexican oregano. I added mostly everything but went easy on the oregano. The chunks of chicken were tender and not overcooked. The hominy and vegetables were just right as well. They have this to a science and it has to be near perfect. Now to the tacos: As you often see in neighborhood grocery stores the chorizo was hanging in back above the meat counter, so a house made chorizo taco was a given. The Al Pastor was reccomend by the one of the butchers, and I had a steak taco to round it, and myself, out. All I can say is that like the pozole everything was superb. Even the salsas.. I wish I knew of this place when I worked and lived in the area. I would definitely have known everyone there by name. I still smile thinking of it, and next time I'm in that hood, I will be there. I look forward to trying out a few more menu items, and picking up some of the fresh meat. So maybe don't slap Grandma... but you should at least pick her up and take her out to lunch here. Enjoy! #AlfieEats
