The staff was super fast, efficient, and helpful. They clearly want to keep things moving and get everyone queued up quickly, so the intake process may feel businesslike and rushed--especially for a new customer like me who hadn't had their Friday morning coffee yet. That said, I really appreciated the efficiency. It was also nice to see the smog technician take his time during the actual test and point out (and in my case, attempt to fix) any areas that could potentially become problematic. I was in and out so quickly that I actually forgot my water bottle in the lobby, but the technician gave me a quick call and I was able to retrieve it shortly afterward. I'll definitely be back again the next time I need a smog test! read more

Lovely, lovely people! Great customer service and I was in and out in about 40 minutes. He even told me that I should probably go get my car checked out because it sounds weird when it starts up. I had a really good experience at this place and I highly recommend them! He was very busy, but he was able to get me in and out of there in about 40 minutes. The prices are reasonable and great and the staff is lovely. read more

The man who did my smog was quick and helpful. He told me the Safeway down the street has a DMV Kiosk and that was so great. I was able to take the paperwork from him and get my registration sticker the next day. read more

I called and asked if I can bring my car in for a smog check. Vince was very friendly and helped me right away. He also said my antifreeze was running low and educated me on how to refill it. I will definitely come back moving forward to get my smog check. read more

Pretty simple. Very nice people doing competent smog checking at a fair price. Check them out.

I mistakenly went to this smog test spot instead of the one I called. By happenstance, things worked out. Vince and his assistant were both unassuming, helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. Vince, thanks for giving me great service at a great price today! I really appreciate it. I left feeling taken care of and armed with some recommendations regarding maintenence items I can tackle to get my car in even better shape going forward as well as how and where I can get my new tags from. Highly recommend for others to see Vince for all their smog test needs. It's located at the end of the driveway where the autobody shop is on San Pablo Ave at Barrett Ave. read more

The best smog shop in Richmond and I will say the whole bay are. He has really good pricing even with today's economy, if your car fails smog he will charge you really low, I brought on my first time a mustang that I did not knew it had BBK1 headers and he started doing the smog and found them out and told me why it would fail and he only charged me 10$ that's crazy other shops would not care and charge me 80$ like advance smog on San Pablo ("TRASH SMOG SHOP") . Well then he guided me and showed me all the websites that I can search and look for the headers that I had in my car and see if those are legal in CA, well after a few days I did my search and brought the part number of the headers and I was able to pass smog clean and he only charged me 65 or something pretty affordable. And he talked to me really good and gave me a lot of knowledge. Now a few months later I when back with another car. Pumm he started to check the codes and stuff like that and found out that I had like a few codes that the machine was not able to read because the battery had been disconnected before, he gave me a paper with instructions and like how long should I drive it, how to drive etc etc so all the sensor or like monitors would start ready, after I drove it for like an hour I came back and pumm the car did passed smog, we had another really great conversation he was giving me again more advices on what to do with my life etc etc. I less worlds I really recommend this smog shop and I hope he gets a lot of more clients, he already has me, I will try to refer him to my family members and friends. Great smog shop and great guy. read more

This is a tough review to write because I have real respect for what the owner is building. He seems like a great guy, and the shop looks like a solid, honest operation. I also admire the effort he's made to involve his daughter in the business. But I want to share my experience in the hope that it's ultimately helpful. When I arrived, his daughter was working the front, possibly after school, and unfortunately the interaction was pretty rough. Everything I said was met with attitude or a negative response. I tried to stay open and respectful, but it became clear I couldn't be around that kind of energy. I decided to leave before getting the smog check done. The owner was busy working on another car at the time, but as I was pulling out, he ran over to catch me and ask what was going on. I appreciated that, and I told him honestly about my experience. He seemed surprised and genuinely concerned. I hope he takes this feedback in the spirit it's intended. I mean everything I said that day, and everything I'm writing here, with respect--for him, for the business, and for his daughter. This could be a great learning opportunity, and I truly wish them both the best moving forward. read more

Knowledgeable, kind, gracious and quick. Why go anywhere else? These folks are the real deal, and last year advised me for free when my car failed at another Star Smog station. Failed due to employee lack of knowledge and not due to car issue. Richmond Star Smog actually told me last year to go back to where the car failed and re test for free armed with proper intel rather than have it smogged here at more cost to me. So, I'll add Honest on to this review for them too. read more

Vince was very friendly and fast and even checked tire pressure on each tire. I would fully recommend him over any other local smog locations. and the price is very competitive!!! read more

Very kind and honest family business. The service was quick and thorough. He even pointed out something on my car to keep an eye on and was very professional. But the best part is the price! By far the best price in Richmond and I've called just about all of them. Overall very honest and humble father daughter team with a clean workspace in a good location. 10/10 read more

I brought my 1999 Honda Passport in for a Star Smog Inspection. Vince was very professional and knowledgeable. He was able to scan my vehicle to make sure it was ready because my car battery died a few weeks ago and sometimes the monitors won't be ready. I've not written a review for a hot minute but this place deserves it. I came in on a Monday afternoon for a smog check and was in and out in about 15 minutes. Very affordable price compared to what I paid 2 years ago. Vince was super friendly from the get-go and even went above and beyond to check for any oil leaks + fill in my tires. It turns out, my engine oil had been leaking for god knows how long and was on the brink of being empty! Had I not known, my engine oil would have run out, damaged my engine, and would have cost me lots of $$$$ to fix. After the smog check, I headed to Fahrenheit Auto (right next door, also highly recommend) to get it checked out and fixed. I will definitely be coming back for my future smog checks and recommend this place to family & friends. Thank you for going above and beyond for your customers Vince! read more

I was here with my mother for a last-minute smog check. Vince was incredibly accommodating, and friendly. To my surprise, he picked up me speaking Cantonese with my mother and was also able to speak some Cantonese, which she definitely appreciated. From what I heard from Vince, he encourages phone calls to check if you're worried that the shop might close before you can make it. read more

Vince gave me a smog at a very reasonable price and was very friendly. On a Sunday when a lot of places aren't open. Vince also checked my air and discovered one of my tires was only half full. I have only good things to say about Vince and the woman working the desk at Richmond Star Smog. (If you're reading this, sorry I didn't catch your name!). I scheduled an appointment for 2pm, arrived at 1:58, and was immediately taken in. The intake process was quick and efficient. The smog test was lightning fast: I'm back home writing this review at 2:22pm. Vince was super nice and respectful, providing free advice about car maintenance while conducting the test. It's a shame he's not associated with the garage next door: I've been searching for a mechanic and would take my car to him in a heartbeat. read more
