In recent years my tests have all been on Hybrids, so it's basically hooking up a computer, checking under the car to look at the Catalytic Converter and checking a few more things under the hood. His website was down this week (hosting provider issue) and he was away when I stopped by yesterday so I worried that he was out of business but he was there today and finished my car lickety split, giving me the web discount for telling him about the issue. I've been going here for 5 years with multiple vehicles and the service is always great. The garage is in the back of the strip mall, so from I-80, go down McBryde past San Pablo Avenue and turn right into the alley behind the building. He's right where the rear parking lot opens up into two rows of spaces. If he's working on another customer's car, just park there, as there's always space in the rear of the lot. read more

So happy I found this place. I will definitely be back if I ever need another smog test. In the meanwhile, I intend to point my friends and neighbors in the direction of Richmond Smog. Although I usually do a fair amount of research on all available service providers before selecting one, I followed my gut with Richmond Smog, picked them right off the bat, and my instincts were right. Hugo answered the phone promptly. He readily quoted me a price over the phone, speaking clearly and in a friendly voice. No grumbling, mumbling, or terse responses. No digging for information. BTW -- I was bracing myself for a much higher price and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Richmond Smog was charging what I paid the last time I got a car smog-tested...about 9 years ago: $69 for both the test AND the certificate. I arrived at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon and was taken right away. His garage is small (accommodates one vehicle at a time) but very clean. The entire process took ~10 minutes -- so I barely had time to walk around and check out the neighborhood. The results were filed with DMV electronically, I was given a hard copy of the intake paperwork and the test results, and Hugo presented his iPad so I could type in my email address to receive a copy of the sales receipt. It was a seamless and satisfying experience from the first moments of my telephone inquiry phone call to the goodbye. read more

I happily waited about 10 mostly because an O'Reilly Auto Parts delivery truck was blocking me from entering the Smog shop. I wasn't in a rush.
