I've been going here for a few years and will not go back ever again. After missing an apt and getting a bill for $350, they said if I came in, they'd erase the debt. I went in again, and they refused. After asking for the Dr to call me back and them assuring me he would, he never did. Generally speaking, this place feels like a racket. I have really enjoyed seeing Dr. Schmotter and staff. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I have been there for my two kids, ages 12 and 14, and myself. The hygenist did a great job and even remembered me the next time I came in. My daughter needed some cosmetic work on a tooth and Dr. Schmotter patiently went through the options and was favoring the more economical one just to save us money. Went in Only for consultation because other dentist messed up. Dr Schmotter took the time to listen and then make great advise. That was all I wanted BUT he went ahead and corrected the problem then and there. Not only have I never been so embarrassed, but going to the dentist is hard enough, especially when the dentist with horrible breath criticizes your teeth! I never want to go back. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this dentist. I first wound up in his chair after having a bogus diagnosis - this was over 12 years ago. He was SO ethical. He told me that the xray results from another dentist were simply incorrect and fraudulent. As a result, he became my dentist for many years, until I moved to North Beach in SF this year. I still get compliments on the only crown that I have. I looked for a more local dentist and was given a recommendation. I checked it out and... After a poor experience with Dr Fox (actually it was his secretary Misty, who is simply a bad front of the house choice as an employee but likely holds some "magic power" over the good doctor), I succumbed to driving back over the bridge and going to my original dentist, Dr Schmotter. What a pleasure. Always professional, friendly, intelligent and thorough. And...they have free parking and a fabulous receptionist who seems to actually like people! I highly recommend Dr Schmotter. This review is for Dr. Claudiu Marin. I have been going to this dental office for most of my life, and when Dr. Schmotter's partner (Dr. Joe Armel) retired, I lost a wonderful dentist and a good friend. Although I have absolute trust in Dr. Armel's decisions, I was skeptical about having a new dentist, even though I knew Dr. Armel spent a great deal of time finding just the right folks. When I met Dr. Marin, I wasn't sure if he was the dentist for me, but I decided to try him based out on my former dentist's recommendation. [I have to admit, Dr. Marin's use of new technology was impressive.] When I came in for my services, I found Dr. Marin to be attentive, gentle, caring, and extremely professional. As a bonus, the work actually cost LESS than we anticipated. OK! I'm sold. So, even though I live a good 30 miles from his office, I have a new dentist. Dr. Schmotter is my long time dentist, and I want to highly recommend him! I have been going to him for about 12 years, and switched to him when I needed two dental implants. A former dentist, who didn't perform dental implants, disparaged implants and had tried to talk me into getting bridges - which I did not want. Dr. Schmotter perfomed the operation superbly - and over 11 years later I am still extremely happy that I held out for the implants - which are so good that I actually occaisionally forget that I have them - I will feel them with my tongue and think - hum - my tooth is numb - is there someting wrong? - oops - no - that isn't a tooth - that's the implant! While Dr. Schmotter is certified to perform, it seems, just about everything - he is very ethical and will not hesitate to send you to a specialist - such as Dr. Alex Kashef of Marin Oral Surgery (located one floor up and directly above his office!) - for rare or extreme specialty work. Dr. Schmotter shares space and support staff with Dr. Armel. While I have no direct experience with Dr. Armel - I was distressed to see the 2 negative 1 star reviews for him based strictly on an unfriendly front desk person. I have never had a problem with the front desk - and felt bad that a seemingly very able dentist would be so badly tarred because of a possible employee problem at the front desk. Dr. Schmotter is a first class dentist with the right combination of technical and people skills. He is the best general dentist that I have ever had and I highly recommend him! One item that I should note that does set this office apart from others that I had been to - the numerous dental chairs are arranged in "Bays" with counters and equipment on both sides of the chair - but there are no private rooms - all 10 or so chairs are seperated by the work dividers - but all are set up in one large room! While I wondered about privacy issues on my first visit - my concerns were quickly allayed by the fact there was enough seperation and background noise (and lack of interest in someone else's dental issues) for this to be a real consideration - but I now find it actually to be a comfort in that with all of the different work going on - all the procedures are being done to the highest up to date standards - in an open manner that hides nothing - and there is NO screaming !:0 - and only the best practices of professionalsm are there for all to see - making me more comfortable! read more

Dr. Schmotter did a bridge for my daughter 8 years ago that bothered her for years. She kept going back to Schmotter but it was never right. She recently went to a young dentist and had it fixed. I kept going as he had been my Dentist for over 30 years. But recently I also had a problem. He filed my tooth so short that he just left a stub which cracked. Now I have to get a bridge. Dr. Richard Schmotter's office is very inviting, modern, and comfortable. The staff is totally terrific. They do not make you feel bad because you didn't quite floss enough. One sign of knowing that it is a terrific dentist is that the people who work there have been there 30 years, if they are old enough. They are so kind, they always make you feel like you are the most important person in the world. I went there initially because an awesome triathlete named Stephanie said her father was a good one, after I took a face plant going 20 miles an hour on a bike and had tons of teeth get knocked out. I am almost back to normal, considering I did not get the screw on teeth. Most people do not notice the difference. Dr. Schmotter, himself is warm and kind. He is generous to a fault. I was lucky to find out that Doctor Schmotter had moved from Aspen in the mid 80s and had opened a dental practice in Marin. He is a very skilled dentist and does the highest quality work. His crown work is perfect. He is a salt of the earth kind of person, and he will do what is best for you. The new doctor here replacing Dr Armell is Dr Marin. Dr Marin does indeed have impeccable technique. Dr Marin However is from my perspective close to obsessed with not prescribing pain pills and limiting the nitrous oxide. After doing a root canal and prescribing Clindamycin for what he described as a "significant infection" Dr Marin lectured me in person and over the phone in reference to his thinking about my not needing any pain medication. I am fully aware of the current opioid epidemic but at age 70 I also believe that if I were going to develop a dependency it would have happened by now and that a prescription for pain meds after a root canal isn't going to be to my detriment and I should be the one to say whether or not I am in need of pain meds. It is really very important to me to feel secure that my dentist is going to adequately address my pain management. I never had any issues or doubts regarding this with Dr Schmotter for over 20 years. Dr Marin, however from my experience carries his personal convictions beyond what is reasonable with regard to not prescribing pain meds. Consequently Dr Marin is someone I wish to avoid. read more
