I just saw Dr. Wyzykowski with a number of hand-related complaints. Unfortunately (perhaps) on the day that I saw him, my hands weren't exhibiting many of my symptoms just like taking your car to the local mechanic... I'm a veteran of many hand surgeries and as I age my hands are acting up and cantankerous and apparently shy at times. He did spend a good deal of time explaining things to me which I greatly appreciated. He offered some cortisone injections but after just having a left shoulder Shingrix vaccine which hurt like heck, I wasn't in the mood for any needles. He did seem just a bit touchy when I explained to him that I had just read an article about cortisone injections actually causing arthritis. He did take the time to explain to me that it is well-known that cortisone injections in the joint can negatively affect the cartilage but that isn't the case when your tendons are injected. He also was careful to explain the need for referrals or consultations with other specialists. So that's a lot for a busy MD. read more

I have a partial rotator cuff tear. I attended my visit with a loose short sleeve shirt and pants. He demanded that I remove my shirt twice. I refused both times, showing that my entire arm, including my shoulder, were visible. He had scans which clearly reflect my injury, so there was no reason for my shirt to be off. He did a range of motion test on me and when I told him to stop because it hurt, he pushed my arm further. I told him to stop repeatedly and he continued hurting me. He was not taking notes at any point while he was adjusting my arm and hurting me. When I told him that I had limited feeling and a colder sensation in the affected arm, he told me that he had never heard of those symptoms and insinuated that I made them up. He therein stated, unprovoked, that my arm was not blue and I responded that I never told him my arm was blue. He asked if I had a dislocated shoulder and when I told him I didn't know, he told me I couldn't have a dislocated shoulder. The line of questioning/statements were incongruous to the conversation and were alarming. He was hostile throughout the appointment and made me extremely uncomfortable to the point that I had to tell him that I felt uncomfortable and needed to leave. I feared that this has happened to other patients and when I arrived home, I checked online, and was affirmed in my fears that he has. This is not a person who should be performing any type of exam on any person. I reported him to the medical board. This person should not be in a position where he is "treating" vulnerable people. read more

Before I went to Wyzykowski to have my shoulder examined I watched his video. In the video he was a really nice person and claimed to really care about people. But when he walked into his exam room for the first time, (An entire hour late), he was a completely different person. He was cold, arrogant, rude, rushed and hostile. I felt really uncomfortable. He gave me a cortisone shot and just rammed the needle in and showed no concern that he was hurting me. Explaining my shoulder to me, he spoke quickly and over my head. I didn't understand him so I asked him a question and he got more than just annoyed and told me, "I already told you that . . . what? . . . Are you going to make me WORK and explain it all over again? He was so rude and abrasive that I felt it in my gut. If it were not a in a doctors office I woulda gone off on him. It was so bad that I couldn't get it out of my head. When I went back for my 2nd appointment I was going to confront him about how rude and belittling he was and warn him to never treat me like that again. Now for the second appointmentment, again, I sat out in the waiting room waiting 45 minutes past his appointment time. I realized that I was getting so upset that I was afraid of what I was going to say to him so I left. But before I did, I called their appointment line which sends calls to the phillippines. The wait was another 15 minutes to tell the customer service rep that I was leaving and why and told her that I refused to pay any no show fee, since he had already wasted 45 minutes of my time. I also warned her that Golden State Ortho had better not charge my Medicare for the visit. The communication barrier was significant and I had to ask to speak to a second clerk because the first one simply could not communicate or understand effectively. That was about a year ago. Today I went back to Golden State Ortho for another doctor with a different problem - same thing: The doctor was 50 minutes late for the appointment and treated me like a number. He walked into the room and took over 5 seconds to look me in the eye while he talked AT me not TO me. The Medical assistant was horrible. She never even looked at me once while she checked me into the exam room, and could have cared less about anything. Completely cold, vacant and not present. When it was time to take me down the hallway to get my cast changed, she was going to make me walk the entire way and I had to ask her for a wheelchair = total complete lack of training. Golden State Ortho is to be avoided at any and all cost!!!! You'll be sorry! read more

Dr. Wyzyskowski has always been extremely thorough and never dismissive of my concerns. Unlike so many other doctors, he took my symptoms seriously--addressing my frozen shoulders, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel issues without any bias due to my medical history, including mental health diagnoses like bipolar and ADHD. Sadly, I've faced significant medical gaslighting from other providers, but with Dr. Wyzyskowski, I felt validated and respected every step of the way. While some reviews mention his reputation for being very direct, I've always found his directness to be compassionate and supportive. Dr. Wyzyskowski is honest, thorough, and not afraid to tell it like it is--qualities I deeply value in a doctor. He focused on what was truly necessary to improve my quality of life, such as cortisone shots and physical therapy for my frozen shoulders, and he thoroughly tested and treated my tennis elbow and carpal tunnel. His care has always felt genuine, and I truly felt he went above and beyond to ensure I received the treatment I needed. I left every appointment feeling confident in his expertise. For anyone who values a straightforward and respectful doctor who genuinely cares about his patients, I highly recommend Dr. Wyzyskowski. His honesty, empathy, and inclusive approach (the opposite of ableist) are a breath of fresh air compared to the dismissiveness I've experienced elsewhere. 10/10! read more

Saw Dr Wyzykowski today for the first time. He asked me if I had a cold. I said yes, that's why I wore a mask. He told me masks don't work, that he didn't want to get sick and told me to reschedule. He said we don't let people with colds in this office and he walked out. I'm wondering if he just doesn't want to see Medicare patients after reading the other reviews of his rudeness. I won't be going back. read more

I saw Dr W, on 9/23 . I had medical tape on my arm from physical therapy I had earlier that day. He was going to give me a cortisone injection but saw the tape and told me to go home and clean it off with "Goof off", and then make another appointment, there were only two stipes of medical tape, which he could have cleaned if it were an issue. 10/9 back to get shot, pain was gone next day. 11/25, I go back because the pain is unbearable, I cannot lift my arm to comb my hair or button my pants. If i bump my arm the pain almost brings me to tears. He sends me back to physical therapy and will not give me something for the pain. I am limited on what pain pills i can take for another reason. All three visits this person was an arrogant pompous ass to me. I should have read his reviews before seeing him. read more

Had my 1st visit with this Dr. today, and it will definitely be my last. He was arrogant and cold. I would rather go around in pain then have a Dr. like him. I was referred to Dr. Wyzykowski for a cyst on my left thumb joint. After a physical examination of my thumb but before seeing any X-rays (which were taken on my way out) or ultrasound (which was not done), Dr. Wyzykowski informed me that surgery was the only realistic option. He stated confidently that due to likely bone spurs, draining the cyst would inevitably lead to its reappearance and that there were no options other than surgery, which I should do promptly. He refused to further discuss other options, becoming impatient when I tried to ask additional questions about alternatives such as trying the draining first to see what would happen. He also informed me upon my questioning that general anesthesia would be required due the tourniquet that would be necessary on my upper arm, which would make it difficult to keep my hand still under local anesthesia. When I asked about the risks of surgery, he stated only that everything has risks but these risks were minimal. When I asked about the risks of general anesthesia, he and said that he was not an anesthesiologist and if I wanted to know about this I should talk to an anesthesiologist. At the end of the visit he handed me a card for his surgery scheduler and said that if I did not get a call from her to schedule the surgery within two weeks I should call her myself. At this point I accepted the card and had the X-ray on my way out of the building, but had already decided that I would not be willing to work with him. I also saw that in the letter he sent to the referring physician after the visit, Wyzykowski stated that "[the patient] understands the risks include but are not limited to wound complications, infection, neurovascular injury, persistent or worsened pain, weakness, stiffness, recurrence of the cyst, loss of function, and loss of life or limb. All of his questions were answered and he has agreed to proceed." Although he did mention reducing the risk for wound complications and infection while outlining post-operative home treatment, nothing else in this text quotation is true. I then researched other specialists and made an appointment with Dr. Rebecca Yu in Berkeley. I did not initially mention anything about my previous experience with Wyzykowski. As part of the exam she used ultrasound, showing me the pictures and explaining her findings to me in real time. She said that the bone spurs were minimal in the area of the cyst. Then I gave her the X-rays from my previous appointment and she reviewed them with me, confirming what she had seen from the ultrasound. She then carefully explained my three options of (1) watchful waiting, (2) draining the cyst, and (3) having surgery, including risks and benefits for each, and providing probabilistic risk estimates when I asked for them. I told her my preference would be to have it drained once I had my COVID vaccinations, or sooner if it were to become more painful or enlarged, and then to reconsider surgery if the effect of the draining was short lasting. She reinforced that she believed that to be a very good choice. I also asked her about anesthesia if surgery became necessary, and she said that local is best and that she would use a digital tourniquet rather than an arm tourniquet for this type of surgery, so general anesthesia would neither be needed nor appropriate. Cleary I plan to follow-up with Dr. Yu over time, and to avoid Dr. Wyzykowski and Muir Orthopedics in the future. read more

This Dr. (Wyzykowski) is a miserable excuse for a doctor and human being. Truly. Not only is he rude and incompetent, but he's also a pathological liar. When I complained about his chronic mistakes and failures (i.e. his poor cast placement - TWICE; failure to advise anyone that a port was needed in my cast to accommodate the $5k bone healing stimulator he prescribed; his failure to advise me to exercise my hand in my cast and report stiffness right away; failure to prescribe OT during the initial crucial weeks to prevent stiffness and permanent hand damage), Dr. Wyzykowski deflected and attempted to blame ME for developing stiffness in his improperly positioned casts (3 do-over casts needed over 13 weeks is ridiculous). I left his "care" with new injuries I didn't have when I came to him, and he tried to blame me for that?? How ridiculous, unprofessional, and unethical can one doctor be. He then proceeded to lie and spin the facts in his medical notes to cover his tracks and blame everyone else but himself. Zero personal responsibility. He lied and said I was a smoker in my medical notes, which is a complete LIE. I've never been a smoker, nor did I ever say anything of the sort. I think his office mixes up their patients and repurposes patient notes. I honestly can not say enough bad things about this man and most of his staff. He's the absolute worst doctor and human being I've ever personally encountered in my lifetime. I've experienced behavior from him very similar to that of other Yelpers. He rolls his eyes and cuts you off, and walks out of the room abruptly when he feels questioned or the slightest bit challenged. He fails to advise or prescribe appropriately and then blames you, the PATIENT, for not knowing better. Um, excuse me, isn't HE the Dr.?? He routinely fails to communicate and then blames everyone else but himself. Dr. Wyzykowski is a textbook gaslighter, narcissist, and bully. Based on many of the 1-star reviews from women, it seems that he's a misogynist as well. Character matters. read more

Richard J Wyzykowski, MD - Poorly casting. Dr. Wyzykowski also failed to prescribe OT during the crucial 1st 12 weeks to prevent permanent damage. - Orthopedists Near Me - Walnut Creek, California

"Compassionate caregiver" is not a term I'd use to describe this individual. One of the first things he said when I arrived with an injured shoulder is that he 'doesn't provide pain meds', only NSAIDs. Despite this seeming a bit risky, I took a leap of faith and agreed. It was a regrettable mistake as the pain did not subside enough to allow sleep. After a week of this, I made an appointment for a med review/pain treatment plan. When it was my turn in the Urgent Clinic, he refused to even see me, telling his assistant there was nothing more he would do. After seeing all the other "One Star" reviews, it makes sense that he's worried about his career; getting labeled as a "pill doc" would be an ender of what's already a troubled performance as a healer. read more

Wow - I wish I'd read the reviews here before seeing this arrogant, rude doctor! I was even reluctant to post a negative review as I very rarely do that. But he was so condescending and dismissive that during the visit, after no more than 10 minutes together I stopped and asked, "Am I frustrating you in some way?" He replied, "We doctors have a limited time with each patient and I'm spending time here to get to the root cause of your issue when I could just prescribe a shot and PT." I couldn't believe my ears! I had been provided with a misdiagnosis of the X-rays from the ER visit so there was a bit of unraveling to determine if I had arthritis and/or Carpal Tunnel (I believe I have both) and whether the recent swelling, stiffness and extreme pain were triggered by my recent Reclast Infusion. I believe he wanted me in and out fast and these multiple variables, making his diagnosis a bit trickier, did frustrate him. He was impatient and arrogant when answering my questions, although he neglected to provide the appropriate background information on his treatment plan until I asked for the specifics. I will definitely not go back to him for the follow-up as I was so stressed after spending this one visit with him. I don't care if he's a genius at his craft (which I don't know whether he is or not), but there are certainly more respectful and compassionate physicians out there!!! read more

I cannot rate him as a surgeon, since surgery was not an option for my broken bone. However, I would rate him a minus five as a physician after one of the worst medical interventions I have experienced either personally or professionally. [I have a Masters Degree in Public Health and have worked with health centers from California to Washington to New York]. The following is a summary of my experience of Dr. Wyzykowski: 1. At the outset of the appointment I expressed my concern that in spite of the two hours and fifteen minutes of Physical Therapy I had been doing every day since my cast was removed I had been unable to make progress regaining range of motion in my little finger. The fracture at the base of the finger had healed well, however, the finger was stuck in an almost 90 degree bend at the knuckle. Despite all my efforts I had been unable straighten it. I sensed that there was something wrong and made the appointment with Dr. Wyzykowski to find out if surgery was an option to straighten the finger and regain range of motion. His response to my question was to become agitated, raise his voice and vividly describe all the horrible things that could go wrong in surgery. I was taken aback at his unprofessional manner. It would have been easy to simply acknowledge my concern and tell me that surgery could do more harm than good. I wondered afterward if his over-reaction was because he was terrified of going into a hospital to do surgery in the midst of the pandemic. 2. He barely glanced at my finger, made an assumption that my lack of progress must be my fault. He did not believe I was doing my physical therapy, in spite of the fact that I had explained that I had worked closely with the physical therapist and was faithfully doing three 45 minute sessions every day, even devising additional techniques based on my background in yoga therapy. He was completely dismissive and did not seem to have heard a word I said. He just said I needed to do more physical therapy. . 3. Angry and frustrated after the appointment, I did some research and was lead to the possible diagnosis of an uncommon condition called Dupuytrens Contracture, which can be triggered by trauma to fingers. I returned to my regular doctor who, unlike Dr. Wyzykowski, examined my hand carefully and agreed it looked like Dupuytrens. She referred me to an excellent hand specialist in Berkeley, Dr.Yu., who confirmed the diagnosis and described in detail both surgical and non-surgical options and the possible outcomes. 4. It turns out there is a device available that uses a spring action especially designed to straighten a finger. Apparently, Dr. Wyzykowski and the hand therapist he had me work with were both unaware of this device. His hand therapist fabricated a rigid form with Velcro straps that did nothing but cut off the circulation in the pad of my little finger. If my opinion of Dr.Wyzykowski could have gone any lower, it would have compared to the competence, clear communication and knowledge of Dr. Yu. The doctor who originally referred me to Dr. Wyzykowski had warned me that, 'although he is an excellent surgeon, he could be abrasive". I found him to be not just abrasive but unprofessional to the point of incompetence. read more

Dr Wyzykowski performed carpel tunnel surgery on me last year. The results are amazing! Prior to surgery I could barely write or use a knife or scissors. Now, I have no trouble cooking, gardening, sewing, computer typing, and all the other activities I enjoy. During the time I was seeing Dr. Wyzykowski, he was very professional, personable and attentive. I need to understand everything being planned for my care and why. Never was I rushed or felt my questions were not welcome. I also had to wait past my appointment time for Dr Wyzykowski as others did, but the wait and/or planning for a possible wait was worth getting a top notch doctor who was interested in my health and issues. In addition to the actual surgery, Dr. Wyzykowski made sure I had pre-op care and OT as well as post-op care and OT to ensure the healing would be successful. read more

This is an amendment to my first experience with Mr. Wyzykowski. I sit in the parking lot of the new office writing this as experience is fresh. After my second visit he spoke directly with me and was very professional about listing to me and hearing my concerns regarding my first experience that I expressed on Yelp. I have to agree when he suggested to not publish a one time experience but instead give it a couple of chances. I conclude I was finally properly diagnosed and appreciate that more than I can express. This is after multiple doctors visits and countless hours of time wasted. He is still handsome as ever and I still have to say the picture is a bit dated! You will be pleasantly surprised ladies. I have to say I cannot change my point of view on wait however. I was told today he had three appointments at 11 two at 11:15 and so on. You have to admit that can't help with waiting time! So if you can wait it out.... He is worth it. read more

Went to him as a second consult. Prior doc put my wrist in a splint that didn't constrain the movement causing the swelling. In a new brace now with limited mobility for a few weeks. I have written a letter of complaint to Muir Ortho and am filing a complaint with the state board. Three days after meeting with Dr. W, I met with Dr. Schilling from Muir Ortho. Dr Wyzykowski is an excellent surgeon. Prior to my initial visit over 7 years ago, I read his reviews which included some negative ones. I usually ignore negative reviews - I usually like to form my own opinion. After three surgeries (2 carpo tunnels and a pinch nerve in my right elbow last year), I found him to be personable and very professional. He takes time to listen to my problems, stopping me when he wanted more details or to performs tasks or "does it feel different" on one hand then the other. He explains what the surgery would be like, the recovery procedure and the amount of rehab I would be going through. After three successful surgeries I am happy I have stayed with him. I guess I should have listened to the reviews, but I took a chance and boy was I sorry. I checked in 15 min early to Muir orthopedics, as I was a new client and knew I had to fill out paperwork. Around 10:15, the time of my scheduled appt, one of the front desk girls shouts, "ANYONE WHO HAS AN APPT WITH DOCTOR WYZYKOWSKI, WE HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED HE IS RUNNING 30 min behind." Ok, no worries, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. I wait. Finally get called back at 10:45. Now I sit for another 30 min without even being checked on. I finally get my stuff as I've now been here a total of 1 hour, which is just ridiculous. I walk out and all the girls at the desk stare at me like I'm crazy for telling them I can't wait much longer because my husband has my 18 month old son at home and he is gonna be late for work now that I've been here for so long. I asked him much longer and one of the girls goes up to the door where he is with a patient and eavesdrops for a sec and tells me it'll still be some time. Wow, over an hour wait when you're only 2 hours into your workday?! What's up with that?!Zero respect for your patients time is absolutely unacceptable and just plain rude. I found Dr. Wyzkowski to be arrogant and rude. For the second and last time. I will not return as a patient.

He is very full of himself. I am a 72 year old female, and broke a major bone in my hand and he told me, in front of my husband who is also a physician, that "we don't do anything for these kind of breaks when you're over 70". He then proceded to try to "reduce" the fracture without using any sort of novocaine or numbing. It was very stressful to hear him tell me to suck it up and stop whining. My husband was so stunned, he was speechless. Needless to say, we went to see a college friend of ours who is an Orthopedist, who said the "over 70" thing was B---S---. Stay away from this guy! I've been a patient of Dr. Wyzykowski's on and off over several years. Previously for problems with tendonitis & trigger thumb. Most recently, Dr. Wyzykowski performed surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. Surgery and the following PT/rehab were clearly explained as well as what was expected on my part to aid in my recovery. I was told he had a specific PT protocol which if followed would likely produce the desired results. It wasn't always easy and frustrating at times, but it worked! Surgery was a success as was the PT/rehab part. I appreciated the extended follow-up on my progress. The only somewhat negative side,is that appts. usually run late and are short in duration. However, this would not deter me from seeing him again for any future hand-shoulder problems that may come up. I am very satisfied with the surgery Dr. Wyzykowski performed and the final results. read more

He is an excellent surgeon but his bed side manner is sometimes lacking. He can be sort and condisending. The biggest problem was the lack of written directions after surgery.
