I came to Dr. Shah for hip pain, am an older equestrian athlete, and had tried anti-inflammatories, chiropractic, and physical therapy. Dr. Shah suggested shock-wave therapy and after three sessions I was able to get out of my car without hanging onto my car door until my hip could handle movement. My riding improved greatly. So thankful for Dr. Selina Shah and her expertise to do PRP injections. After 6 months, I was on the verge of needing surgery for debilitating pain from a plantar plate tear. From beginning to end, she helped to make sure the procedure was as pain-free as possible. It's been about 3 months since the injection and even though it'd be unrealistic to be 100% healed, I'm almost there as it allowed me to travel so much to even log in 25k steps in a day before starting to feel any hint of pain (that went away quickly). Dr. Shah was first enthusiastically recommended to me many years ago by a dancer friend of mine. In that community, she enjoys something of a legendary status, almost a cult following, as it seems every dancer has seen her for one reason or another. I do kickboxing and some basketball and I've been back to her many times for many reasons as I age and my body finds new ways to fall apart in those sports. Because she's in demand - and sometimes travels with different sports teams - it may take some time to get to see her. Dr. Shah is simply the best. It takes time to evaluate an issue thoroughly and each region takes time. I respect that about her. She doesn't rush and sometimes if you have had problems for a while, it takes a while to peel back the layers to really get to the heart of the problem. Compensation by the body for long term problems really complicate the diagnosis. Dr. Shah's forte is just that. She is methodical and is brilliant. With 4 knee surgeries under my belt (3 scopes and an ACL rebuild), I wasn't surprised when both knees started giving me a lot of pain and weakness. There were already signs of arthritis in my 30s and time only exacerbated this despite a very active lifestyle (daily stretching and alternating between swimming, hiking, Zumba, weight lifting, Pilates, cycling). Dr. Shah is a thorough physician with a non-surgical primary focus. I had a very large calcium deposit in my shoulder, and rather than sending me to an orthopedic surgeon who likely would have immediately removed it, she provided me with treatment options. I chose to avoid surgery and see if the deposit would reabsorb into my body after a cortisone shot. Fortunately, at my follow-up visit a month later, the deposit had indeed reabsorbed. I spent a great deal of time researching a new orthopedist and I was lucky to find Dr. Shah. Dr. Shah attended a top tier school, Vanderbilt University, and is a team physician for USA Gymnastics, USA Figure Skating, USA Synchronized Swimming, and USA Weight-lifting. Thus, she is listed as a sports medicine MD as well. She also treats performers at the San Francisco Opera, Berkeley Repertory Theater, A.C.T., and Broadway, among other performing arts companies. She is a former dancer and gymnast who understands how the body moves and heals. During the initial consultation, which was exactly 30 minutes in duration, she took detailed notes and asked pointed questions in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Shah was able to immediately diagnose an issue that a previous MD had missed. Her expertise is evident during the exam. She is knowledgable, firm, and matter-of-fact. You should expect a 15 minute wait time once you are in the exam room while she concludes with other patients. Dr. Shah's front desk staff, Amy, is amazing! She is courteous and efficient and one of the best receptionists/assistants whom I have encountered in a medical office. Amy follows up right away regarding necessary testing, appointments, insurance verification, etc. and checks patients in and out swiftly and amicably. After being referred for surgery for bi-lateral carpal tunnel syndrome, and then consulting with my primary care MD, he suggested I see Dr. Shah for an evaluation and to discuss alternatives to surgery. Dr. Shah provided a very thorough exam and suggested trying steroid injections. Bi-lateral injections were completed in December '23, and at this time (mid-May '24) my L hand exhibits no signs of the carpal tunnel symptoms and my R hand exhibits few symptoms (estimate 85-90% normal in this hand). While seeing Dr. Shah for follow-up, I also began to experience "trigger finger" in my R thumb joint. This was also treated by injection and the condition has not returned 3 months post injection. Dr. Shah and her staff have been easy to work with. She has been communicative and forthright - stating that, though the treatment has been successful to date, we need to monitor it and it is possible it may return. This doctor is rude, condescending and dismissive. She doesn't have time to discuss your diagnosis because she is too busy and doesn't want to "mess up her schedule". She literally spent 5 minutes with me of what should have been a 15 minute appointment and said she did not have time to have a conversation with me. As another patient described this doctor in a previous Yelp review, it was the "most bizarre appointment I have ever had". I felt the same way when I left her office that day. Most bizarre appointment that I've ever had. If you are not an athlete, she does not want to help. I had hoped she would have insight into all of the muscular imbalances that I'm dealing with. I used to be an athlete - but I'm out of commission for a while. If it's not a blatant "here is what's wrong" issue, she has zero interest in you as a patient. Her complex questionnaire intake doesn't allow for 'prioritization' of a given symptom or pain description. She fixated on one that wasn't the biggest issue I was dealing with. About three months ago, I fractured a metatarsal in my foot. After a frustrating period trying to get clear information from my regular health providers to no avail, a colleague of mine recommended Dr. Shah for another opinion. I am beyond happy that I took up that recommendation. Dr Shah was not only clear and realistic regarding my recovery timeline, but she was also exceptionally supportive throughout. While my regular provider had been condescending and evasive, Dr. Shah took my concerns seriously and offered clear, careful instructions regarding measures I could take to maintain the strength of my foot as it was healing. I've been going to see Doctor Shah for a few years. I went initially due to pain in my right shoulder. I had seen an orthopedic surgeon who gave me a cortisone shot which didn't last long at all. Doctor Shah uses ultra sound guided imagery for the correct cortisone placement. She also uses sterile technique in the cortisone injecrion which, surprisingly, the orthopedic surgeon did not. Doctor Shah used the tenex treatment on my shoulder about 10 weeks ago. I've had great results. It is a low pain procedure and I've gained return of almost full range of motion that I didn't have with the cortisone. I'm falling apart at the seams and my hip now needs some attention. Dr shah has been a light an the end of a long dark tunnel. I have been suffering pain in my low back and SI joint since my first pregnancy 4 years ago. I have been to countless doctors and PTs (you name it - neurologist, rheumatologist, orthopedist, acupuncture, physiatrist, chiropractor) with no improvement and a vague diagnosis. So many quickly referred me on to the next person when they couldn't immediately figure it out. Dr shah was referred to me by my sister who is a PT, validated by other reviews on yelp. At my first appt with many xrays and mris in hand she spent one HOUR with me reading the scans, listening and thinking about what might be the cause. An hour! And actually showed me the scans and explained them to me. She then suggested a new diagnosis and course of treatment as well as a fantastic PT (5 stars also for Natasha at sports and orthopedic leaders in rockridge). And she was honest that it might take time to sort it out but she'd stick with it. And she absolutely has been endlessly tenacious. I am currently trying a procedure called prolotherapy performed by a collegue in her office dr Ross (thumbs upon him too). TBD on results but I know that if we need to try something else dr shah will be the first one trying to think up a solution. That commitment is simply rare today in medicine. Also as a side note I've been very impressed with the office - helpful front desk, easy to get an appt, and very collaborative docs who help each other (oh btw I saw the podiatrist there too dr hyatt). As a enthusiastic golfer, my painful puffy left knee became too much of a focus. Finally,I bit the bullet and went to my regular GP who told me it was arthritis and put me on Celebrex. No relief after 6 weeks. Went to my GP's Orthopedic recommendation who sent me for an MRI and then told me "You are just getting old". My boyfriend found Dr. Shah on Yelp and made an appointment for me. She immediately sent me for a "sunrise" x-ray that showed my knee cap was not tracking as it should. The practical explanations and fixes have me playing 18 holes, three days a week and walking. And my left knee looks and feels like my right. Dr. Shah is far and away the best doctor I've had. I have always felt like they say "practicing medicine" for a reason, but I think she's truly on track for "perfect!" Recently I've developed a shoulder problem.
