I had rotator cuff repair surgery 7 months ago with Dr. Kirt Jensen and am so happy to report that my shoulder is back to normal. I am able to do all the exercise classes I enjoyed doing before I dislocated my left shoulder and ruptured my rotator cuff. I am back to swimming a mile 2-3 times a week without any pain or restrictions which I would not have been able to do without the surgery. I also have no scars! I highly recommend Dr. Jensen for shoulder surgery. He is an exceptional surgeon and caring person. Everyone in the office was helpful and very nice. read more

My husband went to Dr. Jensen several years ago to confirm that he needed a shoulder replacement. All that we heard Dr. Jensen talk about was that he was the best, blah, blah, blah. My dad was a retired orthopedic surgeon, and I asked Dr. Jensen to call him as a courtesy. He claimed that he did, but my dad said that he never got a call or voicemail. When my husband had his surgery, I told Dr. Jensen that he will need stronger pain meds, as he had been on Norco chronically. Even tho he acknowledged my request, he didn't do what I asked. Post op I asked the nurse to get in touch with Dr. Jensen before the nerve block wore off, and she tried for 4 hours with no response. He finally shows up 5 hrs later, when my husband is writhing in pain, and he says "well, I told you that he would have pain after the block wore off!" So cocky and rude. I was furious. Post op, the staff in Layfayette office was rude as was he. He said everything looked fine. Ok- fast forward to the past year- my husband has been in pain and range of motion decreased. Our regular ortho had a MRI taken and also had another surgeon opinion- the shoulder replacement was off- head of the new humerus riding too high. He now has to have a new replacement in a reverse fashion, as there is damage that can't be fixed with a normal replacement. Bottom line- avoid this surgeon- even though he has some positive reviews, they were the lucky ones read more

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Kirk Jensen yesterday after being referred by my attorney, initially, and my Pain Management doc sent the referral over. I'm so glad they did! I've met other orthopedic docs for my shoulders over the last few years that were rude, condescending and barely gave me the time of day. One even said I needed my shoulders replaced but he's not the one to do it. What??! This doctor took his time speaking with me to assess the problem(s) and reviewing my images from a couple of years ago. He decided to get current images right there on the spot to give an accurate assessment. The X-ray tech came and got me and I have to say, he was wonderful. What a sweet, funny guy. I didn't catch his name, but THANK YOU for your ray of sunshine attitude. It was almost like getting "Glamour-Shots" done. LOL Dr. Jensen reviewed the images immediately and has a great plan to help fix the issues that cause me pain without replacement surgery just yet. The young lady that came in before the doctor to ask me questions about my injuries and past treatments was also very friendly and caring. The front staff was nice and I literally have zero complaints about my entire visit. I was brought back to a room for my appointment in a timely manner and was seen promptly. The time spent with me was definitely adequate. The doctor was very professional, knowledgeable, down-to-earth and personable. Dr Jensen is very good at what he does if not very rushed and always running late-my issue is with is hideous staff-specifically his reception staff. The amazing physical therapy department here saved my ....shoulder! But, if you are still working and need paperwork sent into your HR find another good surgeon as the office staff at Dr Jensen's place puts your job in jeopardy never getting your paperwork in on time. Arguing with you about what is to be sent, when and how to your disability management HR division. His receptionist would not let me move appointments after the second time going through the process, in order to see the doctor earlier in the month, so it would give her time to submit paperwork when it was due thus avoiding my being threatened with the loss of my job. Very stressful when trying to recover from multiple surgeries. Each time documents were due she took sometimes up to 5 days to get them in, lying about when she sent them as my HR never received them. When I would send her copies of what needed to be filled out to help her and gently remind her of due dates she would respond saying she was busy and I wasn't her only patient she was dealing with. Or just blow me off. I even tried bribery giving her flowers, cards of thanks, and food gifts. Again if you don't need documentation sent to your HR regarding your recovery and ability to return to work-go here. But if being treated with respect and by desk staff that acts professionally and with care-go somewhere else. read more

Dr. Jensen has the most inefficient rude condescending office staff I have ever encountered. Every time I am in his office I hear them complaining about patients. I saw Dr. Jensen in his Oakland office location in 2015/2016. He had a great office staff in Oakland and he saw his patients without a prescreening from an assistant. He actually took the needed time listening to patients while accessing the problem and explaining the solution whether it be surgery or physical therapy. Back then he suggested I start with physical therapy. Which I did in the Walnut Creek location and that was excellent (it bought me 6 years without shoulder surgery). Unfortunately, my shoulder did get worse over the years, so I made an appointment with him in December of 2021 and had rotator cuff repair surgery in March of 2022 that I still have considerable pain from without proper function. I had numerous complications from the surgery -- bursitis in my elbow, frozen shoulder, constant pain and locking in my shoulder. His office in Walnut Creek is run like a McDonald's fast food drive through. If your order is given to you wrong at the window, you are out of luck in getting anything corrected as the employee is done with you once you drive off. I did get a quick initial appointment with Dr. Jensen in December of 2021 that seemed to go smoothly as he assessed my shoulder had x-rays taken in office the same day and ordered an MRI, but the office staff did not process the MRI order and made excuses when I called instead of processing the order. They also put my insurance in their system wrong so when the MRI was finally ordered it was flagged for a pre approval for the wrong insurance company (costing me more wait time). I finally got the MRI in February of 2022. I had rotator cuff repair surgery in March of 2022, but I could not get in touch with anyone in the surgery hospital or office later the same day of surgery when I was vomiting and needed anti nausea medication. I had to contact my primary care provider for anti nausea medication. My post operation appointments were always a pre screening with an his assistant then Dr. Jensen. I explained something was wrong at every post operation appointment as my shoulder felt worse with less use after surgery than before surgery, but this was always brushed off as insignificant. Pain and lack of use are the reason folks get shoulder surgery! I assure you pain and use is significant to patients. After numerous months of physical therapy, pain patches, ibuprofen, voltaren and icing my shoulder, Dr. Jensen ordered another MRI in September of 2022 and again I had to wait until November of 2022 for the MRI as the office staff did not process the MRI order once again and when they did the insurance on the order was incorrect. At the end of November of 2022 I saw Dr. Jensen to go over the MRI which found supraspinatus tendinitis and adhesive capsulitis. Dr Jensen suggested 4 options: do nothing, have a PRP injection, undergo capsular release surgery with or without a PRP injection, but his front office receptionist will not schedule another appointment for me with him at my request so I can discuss the pros and cons of each option nor will the back office surgery scheduler return my calls to schedule another surgery. I have left 6 messages to date. My insurance has not been corrected to date. I am a patient with patients, but this pain is wearing my patients thin. I hope Dr. Jensen reads these reviews and makes some internal office changes. read more

I should have read some reviews before first calling Dr Jensen. Before I first saw Dr Jensen I had seen another surgeon, but with certain surgeries on hold and then coming down with COVID, I lived with the injury for sometime already. After getting cancelled, the surgeon decided he wasn't going to take my health insurance. It took a couple of months to get an appt with Dr Jensen, I had an MRI in hand which showed a torn rotator cuff and labrum. He wanted a more recent MRI which showed the same but took another two months and I finally had surgery in January, about 7 months after my initial visit with Dr Jensen. It took multiple requests to get the necessary doctors note and other paperwork to my employer and to EDD. In fact, my employer didn't get the doctors note and I didn't get my EDD benefits until after I returned to work. Working didn't last long due to the pain. Then 12 weeks after surgery my bicep tendon, which was not even part of the original surgery, ruptured. It had been tight since the surgery and prevented me from working. I was in PT only two weeks at the time and they were telling me to push for the MRI. The pain was so bad it felt like my arm was broken and I couldn't sleep. Everyone was telling me to call the doctors office, but Dr Jenson hadn't "finished his notes" for approval for another MRI to confirm. Several weeks later when I was told the approval was given, I spent a week calling the imaging center to book an appointment just for them to tell me they still didn't have the order from Dr Jensens office. When I called Dr Jensens office to verify the fax number they had for the imaging center, I got yelled at by the person who answered the phone. By the time I was able to get the MRI confirming the ruptured tendon, it's now two more months down the road. You would think in a situation like this, a good doctor would want to get his patient back into surgery sooner rather than later. Well, as it turned out, it seems the tear in the labrum wasn't repaired in the first surgery anyway, something I thought Dr Jensen was going to do after I explained what the last Dr wanted to do, but that I wanted it repaired. Even then, at my last visit with my GP, it seems she had read the surgery report and didn't see any mention of the labrum having been repaired, and this new MRI confirmed the tear is still there. Maybe Dr Jensen is getting cocky. Then again, maybe it's just time that he considers retirement. Not only is his office staff judgmental and dismissive to the point of making you cry when you call for anything, like verifying the fax number his office had for the imaging center, it seems he doesn't really care for his patients, either. The least Dr Jensen could have done was taken the time to let a patient know that torn labrum's and ruptured biceps tendons, no matter how painful, are not normally treated with surgery and, though it might take some time, the pain will eventually go away, rather than be judgmental and dismissive. read more

dr. Jensen, repaired a tendon in my shoulder. A year later my arm hurts twice as much as it did before I had the surgery. When I called the office to request some more PT sessions to loosen my shoulder up a bit, the secretary told me "yes he has an appointment a month and a half from now." When I asked for anything sooner, she says "the doctor needs to see you." Pardon me, but I've already had my surgery, and I do not want to wait another month and a half just so Dr. Jensen can order some extra PT sessions. I am his patient, he did surgery on me a year ago and my shoulder needs attention now not in a couple of months! WTF Is it with today's doctors? When you need to see your doctor, you have to wait for months; Patients are put through an assembly line like cows in a slaughtering house!!!!! read more

Dr. Jensen has repaired my rotator cuff as well as a displaced fracture of the head of my humerus on the same shoulder in a separate surgery. He is very thorough in his examinations, explains procedures well and does an excellent job. He takes pride in his suturing. He is cautious but effective in his approach to healing after surgery. I would definitely return to him should I ever need any additional care of my shoulders. I highly recommend Dr. Jensen. Despite what others have said about the office staff, I always found the staff to be courteous and helpful. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Jensen. I believe I was misdiagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome in my early/mid 20's, that led to an intense and unnecessary surgery with little benefit. I think it helped some of my symptoms of weakness/tingling/pain down my arm, but did not treat the original cause of the pain. I always felt that the problem originated in my shoulder, as the pain started in the shoulder and resulted after repeated heavy lifting. However, I saw multiple orthopedic surgeons, including at Stanford, who told me there was nothing wrong with my shoulder. I was exacerbated, pretty much gave up on any possible fix, and lived with chronic pain for about 7 years. After becoming a PA myself I decided to look into it again, but again was told there was nothing wrong with my shoulder by another orthopedic surgeon in Roseville. (To be clear none of these doctors were shoulder specific orthos.) I was ready to give up hope when my Dad told me he had amazing results with his shoulder specialist, Dr. Jensen, who did two surgeries on his shoulder, and told me to see him before I gave up. I went into Dr. Jensen's office discouraged, expecting the same response I've had before, but he did a much more thorough exam than I've ever had, and immediately pinpointed from my history and exam that there was in fact instability in my shoulder. And he confirmed that instability is a dynamic problem that does not show up on static imaging modalities like X-ray/MRI. I left that appointment with hope and couldn't believe someone was able to so easily diagnose my problem that had been ongoing for so long. He anchored the loose labrum, did a great job, showed me proof of the laxity (pictures from the surgery), and kept me encouraged throughout the recovery process. After completing physical therapy I can honestly say I am not only pain free, but back to being the very active person I used to be without all the limitations I had from pain/weakness/instability. It feels amazing!! I am not only able to sit at my desk and write this without gnawing pain, but I am working out at the gym, dancing, bike riding, skiing, hiking, you name it. :) I cannot thank him enough. read more

I was referred to Dr Jensen for a second rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder. Unfortunately, this was my 8th Orthopedic surgery - 5 knee and 3 shoulder. The following comments are based on my experience with Dr Jensen versus my previous surgeries. Here are the differences: 1. Night before the surgery no one called to confirm that I was clear on the fasting routine or inquire as to whether I had any questions regarding the procedure. 2. The staff at the Muir Orthopedic Surgery center gave conflicting discharge information than did Dr Jensen. No post surgery call from Dr Jensen's office. 3. Post op appointments 5 in total. Amount of time spent with Dr Jensen approximately 20 minutes over 5 visits. Time spent waiting for the Dr Jensen over those visits 3- 1/2 hours. Last appointment I simply left after waiting 35 minutes-no one from his office has ever called to followed up. 4. His office staff is efficacious and condescending. My hope is that he is a good surgeon - only time will tell-I could not recommend him however due to his poor post-operative conduct. read more

Dr. Jensen is widely regarded as the best shoulder surgeon in Northern California. And, without question he did an admirable job surgically repairing my very complicated injury, which included fractures. I am giving two stars for his office administration and for his very condescending attitude. First, for the office. At the first visit Dr. Jensen confirmed that I needed surgery and said his surgery assistant would coordinate. Nothing. No communication. I had to follow up more than once just to get scheduled. After surgery, I still work so needed his office to confirm electronically the short term disability claim to EDD. It took over a month for them to do this, and that was only after repeated calls and emails on my part. His office assistant kept saying that EDD was investigating claims and taking longer. That might be true, but that is only after the doctor's office confirms the claim. It was outrageous. Now for Dr. Jensen. At our initial visit we discussed that in a previous Orthopedic surgery I had a rare complication. He was not interested in discussing how we might approach rehab with that history. After surgery, I developed the complication again. Some of the hallmarks of that condition are extreme pain and lack of mobility. He was completely indifferent to the issue and said in a follow up that shoulder surgery hurts, period. When I finally started PT, and it was very clear that the complication was interfering with any progression, I called his office with a medical question. My physical therapist also relayed the question. No response. I also asked the question via the John Muir electronic application. No response. It look a month for him to respond, and when he did, he called me at 7:00 pm and basically berated me. At our next visit, he was so condescending that my husband had to step in. Worse yet, Dr. Jensen's approach was to lessen the amount of PT and have a cleanup surgery in a few months. Given my medical history, that was the worse possible course of action we could take. At that point, I decided to switch to another surgeon. The new surgeon took a completely different course which included more PT. And the new surgeon is a partner in my recovery. The best decision that I could have made is leaving Dr. Jensen's care. read more

"Kirk Jensen?" said my allergy doctor. "Everybody knows him. He's the guy all the other orthopedists send their problem cases to." But you'll never this from him. He's actually a very modest man who gets embarrassed when his patients heap praise on him. He's not only a fantastic surgeon, he's also a great human being who treats his patients with respect, not as somebody who is wasting his precious time. He listens very carefully to your questions and concerns, and he takes all the time you need. But he's not satisfied with that. He has a wonderful staff of physical therapists who are his eyes and ears, writing detailed reports to him about your progress after every P.T. appointment. They are worthy of the man they work for. I always looked forward to my P.T. appointments because I knew they would make me feel better, and they always did. This is not a no-pain-no-gain bunch, to say the least. They are there to help you heal, and they are very, very good at it. Bottom line: If you have shoulder problems, you are out of your mind if you don't go to Dr. Jensen. And be sure to use his in-house physical therapists, too. Between them, they'll have you feeling much better much sooner than you expected. If I had more than five stars to rate them with, I would. Shoulder surgery can be a frightening proposition, but it doesn't have to be that way if you have a great surgeon like Dr. Jensen. read more

Dr Jensen is a awesome doctor. This review does not reflect on him or his ability as a dr. or surgeon him but the front office. I was referred to him by my orthopedist as my Sternoclavicular joint injury was so severe. Had surgery schedule on Oct. 8th. Went back 2 weeks later for recheck and stitches removal. He had told me I was not to do anything from the day of my surgery for 6 weeks. So scheduled another recheck for Nov. 13. I wanted to do that Monday but it was a holiday. I was told by Dr. Jensen, "NO DRIVING for at least until I see him in Nov. So I have had to depend on my son to take me to do things. The only day that week that worked was Wednesday the 13th. I wanted around 3ish because my son gets out of school at 1:30 and we have to come from Castro Valley, 25 miles away. The girl that was doing the scheduling that day said the only time they had that day was 4:30pm, prime time commute time. He goes to school and works so scheduling to take me is challenging. I agreed to the 13th at 4:30 as nothing else worked. So today we left our house at 3:20pm to allow for commute traffic. Arrived at 4:15 and went in to check in. The receptionist looked at me weird and opened the window. I told her I had a appt at 4:30. She RUDELY told me no you don't he had nothing past like 3. She took my date of birth into the system and told me my appointment was Friday. I told her no as I scheduled it today because of conflicting things and see again RUDELY started to tell me I was wrong and the doctors been schedule weeks out for not having appointments this afternoon. So again I tried to explain to her that I could not schedule anything that day because my son had school and work on Fridays and I wouldn't schedule a appointment that day. She continued to argue that I was wrong. I told her no one called me to tell me if they changed it or if I could come that day. She was extremely insistent that I was wrong and she was right. I finally walkout. She not once offered to reschedule to accommodate the mishap or even tried to be nice. I was wrong, PERIOD! I'm sorry but this appointment is a recheck from a surgery that I had to put my life on hold for for the last 5 weeks. This woman did not seem to give a rats ass about the welfare of me seeing the doctor from a surgery that was not just some wham bam thank you ma'am, in out surgery. So instead of getting into a bickering match with this woman I just had my son take me back home. We wasted 2 hours out of our day because someone didn't seem to put the patients needs above her own. I'm thinking that they must of changed appointments and didn't bother to check with me and just picked a day and time. 1.) My son was busy all day, school in the morning until noon and work from 1-9:30pm and I knew it, that is why I didn't/wouldn't schedule anything on Friday the 15th as I am not suppose to drive, doctors orders! 2.) I do not schedule or have ever scheduled doctor appointments on Fridays as I have found it is the worst day of the week for them. All this was to be timed right as I am leaving town in a couple days to see my son in N. Carolina. I hope Dr. Jensen reads reviews as this has become something that is going to be a mess as I do not return until Nov. 25. The health and recovery of the patient should be of the utmost importance for post surgery and the receptionists should be more receptive to this. Customer service sucks!!! A friend, and current patient, recommended that I see Dr. Kirk Jensen for a shoulder problem that I've had for some time. I was greeted very warmly by every employee in his office that I encountered, as well as Dr. Jensen. He was very personable and knowledgeable. Despite the fact that he's an orthopedic surgeon, he wasn't in a rush to recommend surgery. He made some alternative recommendations in an effort to avoid surgery. Dr. Jensen deserves a review here. A former pro football player gave me his name when I had shoulder pain. I ultimately needed surgery. Dr. Jensen's team was very skilled and I strongly recommend them. He did not push me toward surgery, I will note. He was patient enough to let me pretend I might not need it. To be fair, Dr Jensen gets 5 stars as a surgeon but his staff barely earns even one star for administration. I do recognize that this is very typical for medical offices, but it is quite a shame. In fact, they moved two years ago, but never changed the address on their website. When I pointed it out, they were very defensive and said that they fixed most sites but not all of them. I'm curious as to what sights there are other than Yelp and Google? Anyway, Dr Jensen is a good fellow and don't judge him by his administrative roadblock. read more

Dr Jensen replaced my shoulder joint 10 years ago and although being retired since, it is time to start thinking of another intervention as taking a coke can from the top self of the refrigerator is very uncomfortable... After the last shoulder surgery I felt that I had some lingering ligature issues, but of all the surgeries I have had this was way worse than rods and screws in my back, knee replacement and on and on... I am patient by nature and always want to learn as that is part of taking care of our bodies... After my shoulder surgery I had questions about still existent discomfort and trying to understand thru my questions... On my last appointment w/ Dr Jensen he became outrageously indignant, arrogant and impatient w/ my questions... The last thing I remember of him was w/ his face w/n inches of mine, yelling and unglued... Yea yea, I know, most think this guy can walk on water but after all he is human and not a god... I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND Dr Jensen... Some call this guy "modest", then how come I have heard him BOAST on many occasions about his water polo competition exploits? Ask him about that... I had arthroscopic surgery on my frozen shoulder yesterday. I would call Dr. Jensen an arthroscopic artiste. I feel so good today: I can use my arm in ways I haven't been able to in six months! Now it's my turn to maintain his excellent work with PT. I cannot recommend him more highly. I haven't had any issues with his office staff. I chose dr. Jensen after interviewing two other surgeons in SF. Dr. Jensen was clearly more concerned with what was best for me. He is very personable and easy to talk to. Although he is a skilled surgeon, better pain management would have earned him 5 stars (I should add that I probably experienced more pain than most people with rotator cuff repair). However if the office suspects its not going to be paid by your insurance they stop responding and send you out the back door. Dr, Jensen just operated for a level 5 AC separation on my right shoulder. His office knows the ropes and communicates well. They are busy but know what they are doing. Had the surgery in Summit Hospital in Oakland. Great team that he brings together. Each one is a pro and focuses their communication on you at your speed to explain everything. They also listen very well. I actually could not ask for better people if I tried during the prep and into the OR. I am post surgery not by a week yet and am following all instructions and have had no problems. This is not an overnight heal. I expect rehab to literally be a pain but necessary. I wish everyone could have this great experience. I will continue to see, if necessary, Dr. Jensen in the future because this experience has gone so well. Good luck to everyone and follow all the instructions and after care! P.S. He's not in a hurry to jump into surgery and we waited 4 weeks to see if there was another way such as PT to handle this.
