Medium oysters - 14 euros!!
Maddy W.

Posting this review a little late but, I seriously dream about these oysters. This place is a MUST GO for seafood lovers when visiting the Borough Market. They have a variety of sauce options to pair with your oysters and give you lemons. The oysters themselves were so fresh!!!

West Mersea Rock Oysters, small size.

Second time in London and second time at this location for oysters. Hands down the best place in London for excellent and fresh tasting oysters at a great price! I walked around Borough Market and tasted another location which was also good but cost 3.50£ for each oyster. Walked around to the back and found Richard Haward and they are selling West Mersea Rock Oyster small for 1.60£ each or 6 for 8£. They tasted excellent and are decently sized despite being of the small variety. Come here if you want to eat tons of oysters without breaking the bank.

A must visit for seafood lovers in Borough market! They provide lemons and hot sauce so you can enjoy however you prefer.

I was originally going for medium-sized oysters, but after they showed me - those were huge - I decided to settle with small which were still decent size! Ordered a dozen, but I ended up getting some extra, thank you so much! :) They are efficient, very friendly, and oysters are reasonably priced! The only downside is that they only have a couple of tables and no chairs, so if you would like to sit down to enjoy, this venue may not be for you. While I was ready to pay cash, their credit card reader was available and working. They said "It's working today!"

5 "small" oysters w/ a glass of Sparkling rosé for £10! Delicious!

What could be better than enjoying freshly shucked oysters and sparkling wine while chilling out on the patio?! I meeeaan.... you tell me! Because, Richard's Haward's has got that. ALL of that. And bay-beh, you're gonna loooove it!!! This was hands down the BEST find within Borough Market for me! FIRST of all... those OYSTERS, bruh! Like... can I live? CAN I LIVE??? I was LIVING for these damn oysters!!! How about freshly shucked, huge, and scrumptious!!!! GAWD! So f*cking GOOD! Literally felt like they had just come back from the ocean a minute ago and delivered these beauties to my table. When I tell you that these bad boys were fresher than fresh. Uuugh... bring these oysters to California please and thank you!!! Let's talk sizes. I've never seen "small" oysters that were this BIG before. A sad fact: these "small" European oysters are what would be categorized as "large" at your average American restaurant. Not only are they large, but they're MEATY too! Meaty slurpable heaven. These are the kinds of oysters that you can slurp up with nothing else added. No lemon or mignonette needed! Just slurp them suckas up raw dawg and enjoy (... that's what he said...?!). Then comes the sparkling wine. Oooooohhhh aaaaaahhhhh! Yes, they have sparkling wine and oyster pairing deals. Yes, I went for it because how could I NOT?! I'm an "occasional" sparkling wine drinker, but that sparkling rosé that they served up for me was dynamite. It was perfect. They've got a cute little patio area right in front of their shop where you can sit, relax, and slurpity slurp! The humbleness of the guys working here is just ridiculous. They know that they have an insanely delicious product on deck, but they were so calm and cool. I actually met a guy who was working there who moved from California. We were chattin' it up for a bit about the differences between the UK and that states. Those guys were so friendly. What I would give to have something like this back home. If you're hittin' up Borough Market, this spot is pretty much a MUST visit. Don't believe me? Just read all of the other glowing reviews about this place.

Really great large cherrystones.. and very meaty+briny wild rock oysters (liked small and large better than the medium)
Sallie D.

Really good tiny little hole in the wall store for shellfish. Cash only but there's an ATM across the street. I had one of each sized rock oyster, and 3 large cherrystones. Which was a good amount as the large oyster really was quite large. The cherrystones were absolutely my favorite, very fresh and meaty. I liked the small and large oysters more than the medium I had but all were good. The large was meaty and quite briny. Was perfect with just a splash of lemon juice. All were very well shucked, no shell fragments in my mouth. Thumbs up! This was definitely the best find in Borough Market for me!

Thank god a friend told us about Richard Haward's since this was an amazing meal at the Borough Market. We tried all the sizes of the oysters, including one large one that came out more like an XXXL monster. My understanding from the guys there was that the larger the oyster, the saltier the taste. You order and the shuck your platter of oysters right in front of you with great precision. Then, on a counter along the wall, they have selections of various red & white wine sauces, lemons, and limes to pour onto your oysters, which were all delicious. Everything was crazy fresh, and so so good. They only have standing bar-tables directly in front, and given that this is a fast meal, the turnover was enough so that we never had an issue finding a table. They did also have special deals pairing oysters with rose and champagne, and the glasses I saw had an aggressively healthy pour haha.

Fresh oysters ranging from £1 to £2.20 and sizing from small, medium or x-large. Note: this place is cash only. I got a medium and an x-large oyster to compare sizes, my boyfriend did the same. The 4 oysters came out to £7.40!!! There's a stand to grab napkins and add lemon, tobasco etc if you'd like. The medium was typically sized. The XL was freaking huge, as in, it filled my entire mouth when I tried to eat it lol. I'd recommend draining the water out of the shell prior to eating otherwise it will be extremely salty. They also have oyster-drink combos. 4 medium oysters with prosecco for £10 or with beer for £9.

I could eat these all the time #fresh

Fresh, fresh, FRESH!!! Loved every single one that we had! It was great that they had fresh sliced lemon and lime in 2 huge buckets and also, the enjoyed the different sauces they made. I wish i lived in London so i could visit this place again!

This is another one of my treats when I visit Borough Market, London's premier foodie destination Richard Haward is a seventh generation oysterman with his family having been cultivating oysters since the 1700s. His stall at the market sells only oysters. They happy to shuck them fresh for you to consume on the spot or they'll pack some for you to take home. They are most happy to provide help and tips on shucking, storing and preparing oysters I usually have an oyster or 2 when I'm in the market. Depending on the season, they'll recommend what's the best at the time of year. They provide the traditional condiments but I just like mine with a little twist of lemon before ingesting the soft, sweet mollusc with its briney ozone smell. It may offend the purist but having paid good cash for my oyster, I like to have a couple of chews before swallowing Another stall which helps to make Borough Market the mist visit destination if you like food

Look how big that oyster is! Not just the size is amazing the taste is even more so! (Look! I even got a pearl)

This Waitrose store is pretty poor, even though it has faced the brand all John Lewis Partnership owned stores have adding "& Partners" They didn't stock the Pots and Co, which is a dessert range I like which was quite surprising as I've seen at least a small selection of these in every Waitrose store, even in stores formerly known as "Little Waitrose" They did have some nice selection of dairy products and meats - but pretty much, in general, they seemed to stock a reduced selection to what you'd find at any other Waitrose store, but it is slightly smaller. Interestingly, this store appears to be smaller than your regular Waitrose store but larger (yet sadly less modern) than typical Little Waitrose stores. It isn't completely rubbish and is a useful brand to have within the centre of Islington (Liverpool Road shops) and I do prefer it to Marks and Spencer nearby but that's pretty much where the positives end. 2*

No seriously, it was peanut butter jelly time in my tummy and I didn't have any of the fixins' at my flat. Now stateside, I could just venture to any store to fulfill my cravings. But here on this side of the pond, one must be wise in selecting the store that will carry the spread of Kings and not try to force feed you nasty hazelnut flavourless chocolate vileness. (Was Mr. Peanut a king? Or was that a top hat not a crown? Hmmm, I'm confused. I think there was a king involved in some peanuty marketing... nevermind.) Tesco had an entire bread section. They had an entire jam section. Now for the crucial PB. Success! Granted, it was in the "ethnic foods" aisle which cracked me up. But hey, I could get my crunchy (yes, crunchy) PB on plus grab some black beans, salsa and poppadoms all at once! Nice one, Tesco - you really came through for me and my tums tonight.

I genuinely shivered a little when one of the fishmongers in Steve Hatt's winked at me on Saturday…read more Don't get me wrong, he was a good looking guy and I'm not prudish to a bit of flirtation. The part that made it creepy was that as he winked at me he wheeled past a cart of fish heads, scales, guts and eyes. It was an overflowing barrel of fishy carcasses. This kind of service is very fitting to the Steve Hatt experience. Stand around for too long and expect to get splashed by one of the ice cold buckets of water they frequently throw across the floor. Service is loud and jovial. At any one point there seems to be six or seven men shouting out orders and chopping up fish whilst laughing at their own 'in-jokes' and heckling customers. I liked this attitude a lot but was a bit disappointed when I was told that they were too busy to clean up my squid for me. I've gutted squid before but I'd completely forgotten how much of a hassle it can be. For a job that would have taken them five minutes it took me thirty and of course there was the added stress of having my kitchen, clothes and window (?!) covered in squid. Fish stank all over your kitchen does not say, 'Welcome to my home'. I lost a bit of my sole to those beasts. This aside, Steve Hatt's is a wonderful fish monger. Their selection is second to none and the prices are great. Next time I visit I'll try to go a bit earlier on in the day when they're not so busy. Hopefully then they will deal with my squid guts for me and I can feed my friends without the stench of 'Eau du poisson'...

Steve Hatt is probably the best fishmonger in London (I'm getting worried - there are three fish…read moreshops in my reviews now!) If it had a downside, it would be the queues that you have to endure sometimes, and the prices reflect the quality. I beleive Steve Hatt supplied a large number of the best London restaurants and the quality of the fish is reflected in that fact. You are best advised to go early, because they do sell out. The assistants are all knowledgeable and - unlike in supermarkets - know how to clean and prepare the fish for you.

Old school to the bone. Local villains in one corner, a table of two with Macs out working in another. Me being intrepid in Islington. King's Square might sound grand. But it's shabby. Not shabby chic. Just shabby. All the more thrilling then to find Fish Central nestled in there, across the way from the pub you'd get glassed in if you wandered in for a lager top. The restaurant is bright and airy. White and chrome. Bit of a 70's vibe. The waiters are old men. They are welcoming. I can sit anywhere. I don't need to pick from the menu, maybe I just want a small plate of fish and chips. How the hell did he know that? I nod approvingly and ask if they have tea. Course they've got tea. Stupid question. And it comes in a white mug and saucer. Food comes. Nice piece of cod, crispy batter, decent chips. Chip shop chips. No hint of parsley or lemon. Back to absolute basics. Who needs garnish? Not this lot. Tartare sauce is homemade I think. Absolute bonus. Tomato sauce is Heinz. We can live with that. I plough through it with aplomb. Friday has arrived. Local villains show each other massive respect. Handshakes, hugs and kisses on both cheek. Work meeting looks productive. Everyone's happy because they are all eating good fish and chips and it's Friday so why wouldn't you be? The old men are attentive and brisk. They've done this before. They keep it simple. One wants to know if my Mac is any good. We chat about Macs for a bit. Because he's relaxed. He's done this before. He doesn't need any of the frou frou stuff. He scribbles the bill. It's £8.50. Cheap as chips. Is this where the phrase was invented? I'll be back to try roasted skate wing. And to see if the breadcrumbed cod is as good as the battered one. There is a take away section if you just want to gobble fish and chips on the go. But my advice is, if you have the time, go in, sit down revel in old school simplicity, confident staff and customers who are pleased as punch to be there. No airs and graces. They aren't trying to be something they are not. They are just good. Really good. And that's good enough for me.
