Getting here you really need a car as it is not idealistic to take public transit since there's not a station nearby. This is a massive warehouse. The front area has a small produce selection, massive frozen choices and some dry goods on the other side. The back side mainly consists of bulk items for those that run shops. It's highly recommended to come earlier because according to some friends, there have been days where just about everything was out of stock. So do be aware of this. There's a selection of vegetables, tofus, meats, desserts in the fresh produce. The frozen section is incredibly massive and has just about everything you are looking for! Dumplings, cakes, meats, fish balls of all sorts, etc. The dry goods have a nice variety of noodles, sauces, spices and snacks! As of right now they are rather short on staff so the queue is a pretty long at the moment! Overall pretty good first impression since I came and everything is well stocked. Definitely a place to check out!

I am so happy I found this store! I was so tired of the supermarket fish I was actually thinking…read moreabout going to the Billingsgate Fish Market myself. But now I dont have to because the guys of Holloway Fisheries bring you a lot of fresh fish, straight from the ocean (via Billingsate Fish Market ;-) ) for a reasonable price. No posh counter, just the fish in styrofoam boxes and ice. Happy to sell you just one fish or a whole lot and happy to clean the fish as you like it (pan ready). What they have on offer changes daily and depends on what they expect to sell. So for sushi quality tuna you better try on Thursday or Friday early in the day because these are the days they sell this the most (to restaurants). Cash only, but there is a cash machine on the opposite side of the road. They are the first shop at the entrance of the market.

I've been here a few times and always bought the seafood for the paella I always cook for the annual BBQ (and yes it's always a hit!). I can buy enough to feed 15 for around £15 (squid, king prawn, mussels) with a typical largish fish at about £3-4 though these are more much bigger than their supermarket equivalents. If you ask them they will also happily clean and prepare the fish for you. They even have fish heads if you want to make a stock. Apart from the paella ingredients I've also bought red snapper and scallops without any complaints. The great service and a decent range means that I will always come here and it certainly beats an early morning trek to Billingsgate.

Dangerous pieces of shrapnel shoot past my head as I down my fourth oyster. Ptiiiiing…read moreshhhhwwwwtttt. Tfoooooow. I duck and sway. Note to self. Paintball goggles needed next time. It's like the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan. But with crab shell not bullets. Now that's the sort of restaurant I want to dine in. One that isn't a restaurant at all, but a shed. With service at the front and kitchen roll on the table and mahoosive platters being carried out from the kitchen laden with squeaky fresh shellfish and seafood. And each table bursting with people who have totally entered into the spirit of the place, crab cracker in one hand, Bounty Extra absorbent in the other, and for those lucky enough to have three hands, oyster in the other. This is the type of place where three hands are a bonus. Diners are invited to bring their own bread, because The Company Shed doesn't do bread. And you can bring your own alcohol too although they have a lovely selection themselves. The staff are young and energetic and spend their time bringing you more mayonnaise or wiping up after you because you can't help but make a mess when you eat here. It's down and dirty and you may leave with a four inch piece of crab shell embedded in your skull millimetres from your cerebral cortex. But as long as that's not the part of the brain that deals with eating, job's a good 'un. This might not be everybody's cup of tea, although by the size of the queues I'm not sure that's true. If you rock up any time after 12 on a weekend likelihood is you won't get in at all. It's first come first served and after that they put you on a list. They open up at 9am and last service is at 4pm. The Company Shed is situated on Mersea Island. The Island itself isn't much to write home about although a walk along the marsh land is nice and if you're into birds you're in like flynn. But If you're within a hundred miles of The Company Shed, my advice is get yourself down there. Delicious fun.

Luckily my partner noticed that they had started a delivery service to our area. Needless to say she was on the internet with an order of two crab and seafood platters, 6 massive tiger prawns and 6 local oysters for me. It arrived dead on the time that they stated and was so fresh. Every item was delicious, especially the oysters. However, we still look forward to a visit to Mersea and sitting in the Shed. It's unique, in a seafaring way,

The pork rice bowl came from a stall called Mei Mei and we shared this and both thought it was really good! It has a slightly sweet and sticky sauce, the pork was tender and the rice had a fragrant coconut flavor. They added cilantro and cucumber which provided some crunch and texture. This was fun to experience. We didn't really eat the "viral" foods like the strawberries or paella, but it was fun to watch them prepare things.

I live pretty near Billingsgate. Have done for about 8 years. I've been once. I went for an article I was writing and had a great time (met a fisherman who hated fish - go figure), but once was enough for me. I do not do well with 6am starts. And the last thing I feel like pre-coffee is buying seafood. But I like cooking. I like making tasty things. I like having fresh food that didn't cost the earth in the supermarket (although my local fishmonger is also awesome). I basically want all the good stuff, delivered to my door. Marky Market does that. Not just to your door, but to your office too. I live so close to Billingsgate that I'd have had a very early wake-up call (Mark starts his day at 2:30 am - I'm not even asleep by then a lot of the time). So Qype laughed at me when I got half a kilo of samphire delivered to their office. I made tasty salads with crayfish for a party, everyone was impressed. Even shared some in the pub with some other Qypers. They were happy too. I'll use Marky Market for any special occasion. If you don't like early starts and you like tasty food, you should too.
