Iced Tea and Lemonade
Aaron S.

Rhode Island Coffee is a small coffee chain, with a few stores around Greater Manchester, including this one in Oldham. After 2 pleasant experiences here, I thought the third time would be a charm, and just add to my great experiences here, but I was wrong. The store was quite busy on my visit, probably with people sheltering from the drizzle, and wanting to grab a hot cup of coffee in the meantime. I ordered a Ham and Cheese toastie Gluten free, with a Vanilla Latte and little did I expect what was to come. The service was pretty slow in getting my order, and when my coffee eventually arrived, I found her to had made the drink wrong, I asked for a medium vanilla latte and she brought me an iced one, I find this to be stupid really, I didn't ask for an iced coffee, when I say latte (and I'm sure everyone else does) they mean a hot coffee, unless requested otherwise. The "barista" talked about making this mistake numerous times, in the reverse order earlier today. I feel that she is just wasting products here, and to be honest it is unfair on the chain, and the customer having to wait longer for their drink, as well as costing the company in the wrong run, it also costs them customers, like it may well have with me. My coffee was eventually served, and you could see where they tried to start latte art, and it looked like it failed towards the end. My latte was not stirred, hence I had to stir it in, which for a vanilla latte is ridiculous, as they should stir in the vanilla. After the incident with my coffee, I thought that they wouldn't mess anything else up, but once I again I was wrong... I ordered a ham and cheese gluten free toastie, and my server (someone else) made sure what I wanted on it, and I told her "ham and cheese", so it makes the mistake of bringing me, just ham even worse. The toastie did take quite a while to come, hence I was expecting everything to be right, however I was shocked when they had forgotten the cheese, as ham solo on a toastie isn't a popular option anyway, never mind considering I told my server a good 2-3 times that I wanted "ham AND cheese" By the time my toastie had came back, everyone else in my party had finished their food, and I found the presentation to be a little sloppy, with the cheese overloaded, stuck to the bread and coming off the sandwich. I do like the idea of a coffee shop offering gluten free food, other than a wrap but based on this experience, it doesn't seem like they can handle doing it when they are reasonably busy, hence struggling to take the full order, and complete it to a good speed. The pricing here is quite expensive too, and reminds me more of a Starbucks/ Caffe Nero, rather than a chain of independent coffee shops. I am even struggling to give 2 stars to Rhode Island, and after my praise of this store and great experiences in the past few weeks, it is quite upsetting to see a change like this (especially in such a short period) and the only reason, I feel saving them from a 1 star ranking, is my past experiences here. I will be calling back soon to claim my free coffee for "buying 9 drinks", so hopefully an updated and better review will follow.

I was adamant that given the compact-wooden-pod nature of the place, I should only go in extreme weather conditions in order to make the trip all the more exciting. In beloved but rainy Manchester, blue-skies and sunshine qualifies as extreme conditions. As such, during a sunny June Sunday, I seized the opportunity to sip on a 'Grindsmith' flat white, with sunshine beaming through the open façade (almost entirely made of glass) - I was not disappointed. An excellent decision on my part to go when sunny and excellent brewing skills from Grindsmith as far as kick-ass flat white's are concerned. Grindsmith offers little when it comes to food, there was a very small selection of baked goods but they looked rustic and appealing. I wasn't expecting an extensive food menu, nor was I disappointed by its lack. What is pretty darn cool however, is that Grindsmith stock 'Ginger's Comfort Emporium' ice-cream - absolutely the best ice-cream I have ever tasted! (See my review of the cafe in Affleks palace) Marry this with a Grindsmith espresso and you've got an Affogato sent directly from heaven. £3 well spent I'd say - a delightful weekend treat. Take a walk to Greengate Square. Look, I know the Premiere Inn there is really ugly and a bit of an off-putter, but once inside Grindsmith's coffee haven, you'll forget such an architectural disaster ever happened. You can read more of what I have to say about Grindsmith (and other places) on my new blog: http://thehungrygiraffe.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/grindsmith-espresso-and-brewbar.html

One half of the small building (by the river as the name suggests, but not overlooking it) is their kitchen, the rest light and airy with about six or seven round tables perfect for families and groups. It does get to be a bit of a squeeze in there at times though. On their walls are their chalked up specials and paintings for sale borrowed from the People's Gallery across the road. This cafe is perfect for traditional English breakfast and lunches like paninis, baked potatoes, soups with specials like lasagne and chilli con carne all under £5. They also provide a takeaway service which is pretty popular at lunchtimes.

It is nice to come here if you are waiting for the next train and want something warm to eat. Or even just a good old gossip with your mate. Either way they are accommodating. They help local businesses too by providing takeouts. The place is small but then again it is not meant to be a massive cafe. It is small and quaint to fit in with the town. The river Tame flows right next to it. It is pretty and has photos of the local areas on the walls.

I like the decor. It's perfect to catch up with friends or coworkers, and it would be also be an enjoyable co-working space. We saw plenty of people toiling away on their laptops. Unfortunately, one little gripe though, all of the booths only had one person, camped out with their laptop, so those people should be more mindful to take a smaller table if they're going to work for several hours. I like the various seating options including big tables, small tables, comfy sofa chairs, and counter seating. The menu offers lots of options too including chai lattes which seem less common in the UK, so that was a nice surprise. Overall, it's a cool spot. I'd come again.

I went for when it opened so I was the first one in and I had a great chat with one of the staff about dragonball z as I was wearing a shirt of it. Inside it looked immaculate, very trendy and a place I would love to go to, time and time again. It was a large space too and they had their own merchandise in there which I will buy one day and a full cabinet of delicious looking treats .. all handmade and not the usual manufactured items. I went for a donut and a flat white and they were both amazing. As I was on a coffee tour, I took it all out and had it whilst sat next to the canal ... perfect view for a perfect coffee. I couldn't recommend this place more and I count the days until I can return.

Go in through the main entrance, past reception and the cafe is on the far right. In side it's dimly lit but cosy with lots of exposed wood. Great coffee, great cakes and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Every time we've been here it's always pleasantly busy but not overcrowded. There's plenty of seating inside at tables and long benches, or you can head into the "outside" seating area, which is actually indoors but under glass and so protected from the weather. They also roast their own coffee so you can pick up a bag to go.
