Brilliant selection of accompaniments to Mancunian-roasted coffee

Excellent handmade coffee in the heart of Altrincham As part of an extended trip to Altrincham, I heartily recommend a cup or two of espresso-based coffee from Passion Fruit, a local roaster, now also with a festive menu of honey infused whiskey or chocolate baileys to warn you up during your Christmas shopping! Smooth but strong, the coffee is excellent and I also had a hot chocolate as I wandered the attractive market.

I popped into Passion Fruit Coffee for a quick cup before running our event and have to say it's some of the best coffee I've had from a pop-up stall. I went for the Flat White which was perfect size (small enough to really taste the coffee) and this took around 1 minute to get served. Tucked in the middle of Alti market, it's the perfect place to grab a hot drink if wandering around the market or Alti as a whole on a cold day.

    Great!

Well they do say every day's a school day…read more We learned something we didn't know here; we both simultaneously thought that the milk in our coffees had turned (flat white & cappuccino £3 each) but the manager advises it's the complex quality of the exceptional coffee used, so next time it'll be espressos as milk doesn't add sweetness here and I avoid sugar. The manager offered to make fresh coffees and kindly explained about the quality of their coffee, supplied by Dark Woods Coffee and suggested this coffee ain't Costa - I do agree. My new coffee tasted identical to the original but my wife thought hers less 'sour'. Dark Woods provide the coffee and hand roast their beans on a 1950's Probat drum roaster. They are top notch on the environmental and social impact and certified B Corp - 5 green stars here. When tasting think terroir, varietals and process. I had the chestnut & wild mushrooms with garlic & herbs on organic sourdough supplied by an artisan maker. This dish was well balanced, delicious and a decent portion. My wife had the salmon bagel with cream cheese and scallions. She declared it delicious too (salmon delicately smoked by the Manchester Smoke House and bagel baked perfectly by the Bread Factory, Manchester). The sparkling water came well chilled and in a recyclable bottle. We were seated out back at a wobbly table that only required me putting my shoe on the base, the service was attentive, we were suitably distanced from other diners and they genuinely cared that we thought the milk in coffees was off. The place was spic & span clean and with their focus and transparency on quality organic food, preserving the environment (remember folks the earth is our only home) and relying on artisans for produce it's 5 green stars for them too. Really worth supporting.

Great breakfast and brunch, the interior is really nice and located right in front of the market…read more The quality of food was good, staff were friendly and prices are very reasonable.

We were travelling and tasty good food is a delight especially while moving through airports as there's no pleasure to be had travelling by plane any more. The range and choice of both hot and cold food here was impressive and late in the evening too, just post Christmas. The sandwiches and hot food are prepared in store throughout the day. Funny enough I didn't see any turkey on offer. I toyed with buying the hoisin duck wrap (a favourite of my wife's) then my mood drifted toward sliced salmon that looked so good but in the end it was the most simple sandwich choice of egg & onion on good brown bread. It was a generously filled, fresh, and satisfying sandwich and it's not often egg & onion is available these days. My other favourite sandwich filling has almost disappeared completely - prawn mayonnaise with lemon on shredded lettuce - so I make it at home now. Pret do make a crayfish sandwich but this wasn't available. So I took away - one duck wrap, one egg and onion, a coke light and a delicious flat white £11.83. We could have sat in as it's warm, cosy and a great ambiance. As I chatted with my server it turned out he paid more tax last year that Mr Trump which wouldn't be hard. We agreed he's just an alter noyef and a schmuck. Regrettably there are still no Pret stores in NI high streets. If there was I'd sign up to their £25 a month deal in a heartbeat.

Then I went into the covered part where the food places are located and I didn't really fancy paying £2.60 for a regular latte, so I did some more pottering around the town. I was really enjoying the warm sunshine. It's been a month or so since I was last in town and I noticed that the excavation work on the Main Street was still ongoing and thought to myself that it's taking over a year, what are they actually doing? As I mused, a waft of coffee smell hit my nose from the close by Cafe Nero so there was nothing else for it. They do a darn good espresso con panna here so I had a double at £1.90. The espresso was really sophisticated, it was dark in colour with a nice layer of crema on top (a few mls thick, and completely covering the espresso). The crema comes from the release of carbon dioxide when the espresso is extracted under pressure. The taste here was rich, but not overly so; high levels of richness are characteristic of ristretto shots and it was also bitter, as it should be but not too bitter; high levels of bitterness are characteristic of espresso long shots. If you get a coffee tasting watery, this is usually a characteristic of under-extraction so bring it back. The service was quick and ace friendly. I took my coffee and decided to sit outside in the sun. This was a mistake on my part as I am not a smoker. Over about ten minutes three of those customers who were enjoying the smoke - free atmosphere inside the cafe, popped outside to spoil my atmosphere by smoking and after a quick fag each went back inside. As if this wasn't enough each, without so much as a by your leave, used the ashtray on the table where I was sitting, right under my nose, as if I wasn't there.
