I purchased a Groupon for a Shiatsu/Thai massage with Michael Vasta. In all honesty what I was picturing was not what I experienced, and perhaps that is my fault, but to be fair, I did not get an explanation for what type of massage experience this would be until after I booked the appointment. I do commend Michael for being explicit in the email as to what type of massage this would be and what you would experience during it. I was grateful for that so I knew what to expect and could manage expectations. He does the best he can with the space he has, as he is relegated to a small oversized closet type room in the basement gym of this building. There is a mat on the ground that he works off of which is comfortable enough, but just something to be aware of if you are not nimble to get up and down off of the ground. He seems well trained in his technique, but to be honest, it was not what I was hoping for. He mentioned he gives a lot of pressure, and I just didnt get that out of the experience. There was about 4/5 mins total of stretching, I thought there would be more considering this was an hour deal. I walked out feeling the same as I did when I walked in unfortunately. I had a massage with Michael using a living social coupon. I usually avoid the massage coupons, but this place had such positive reviews, I figured I'd give it a try. Naturally I waited until the last minute to do it so ended up with a Tuesday night appointment at 8. I love the online scheduling system. It was nice to be able to just pull up a calendar and see what was available. The massage room was in the gym, but they have done a good job of keeping out the extraneous noise. Michael's massage technique is shiatsu. I was clothed, and he spent much of his time on my back, and also did some great stretches for my legs. I'm an athlete that is horrible about stretching so I definitely thought that part was beneficial. He was very professional, and I felt pretty relaxed during the whole experience. I bought a Groupon and scheduled a massage with Robina. I show up to the gym where the office is located. It's noisy, dirty, and cramped. I knocked on the office door. No answer. I called Robina on her cellphone. No answer. I waited for 15 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. Nothing. Then I called the number on the business card for ReYOU given to me by an employee of the gym. I spoke on the phone with Michael. He said that all sessions for that day has been cancelled because the gym was closed for the day. I received no notification of the cancellation...not until today, more than 3 days after the appointment. And the gym was not closed. Michael stated that I needed to handle this issue with Robina, that he and her do not work together. They are both masseuses for ReYOU, but Michael neglected to apologize at all for my negative experience. I have yet to receive any call from Robina with an apology, refund offer, or option to reschedule. I called Groupon and they are giving me a refund. Very unprofessional. read more

I'm really shocked to see all these positive reviews of Michael Vasta. I had a really bad experience. I went with a friend on a Groupon we bought together. Michael is extremely awkward and unprofessional. Immediately when I went in, he began a long guilt trip about needing cash tips (this is before I even had the service!) because he couldn't pay his rent that month. His whole demeanor was so awkward that I felt really uncomfortable. Much worse than all that, though, is that this wasn't at all a massage. I was told to prepare for deep tissue. I understand that his methods are different, but this wasn't a massage -- he barely placed his hands on me in various points and apart from occasionally putting pressure down, he never worked a single muscle. When he asked me at the end if he'd hurt me in any way, I almost laughed -- I *wish* he'd hurt me! I had to do my own stretches and knead my own shoulders and back as best I could before I left. My friend had the same experience. We both left feeling just as tense and stressed and in pain as when we walked in. read more

1. Not your standard massage.. no oil or lotion, you have gym clothing on and they stretch you out and "massage" through trigger points. 2. Michael Vasta is not the most professional of people... told me he just got over the flu and I was his first massage back (Ok, I understand him telling me that but then....) ... then he talked about his flu, coughing, cold symptoms, etc for like 20 out of the 60 minutes. He kept saying he was going to cough and how hard it's been to be sick. The last thing I want to hear when someone is touching me is that they just had the flu and were on their ass for 2 weeks. 3. Told me that I can learn anything about yoga and stretching off the internet- that is how he learns all his techniques. Uh, really? For $40 groupon it was worth it to get stretched out as an athlete, but I'm pretty sure you could get a friend to do that for free. This is a massage unlike any other. A former marathon runner, my joints have a long ways to go before all of the damage is undone. Michael was great - he used a combination of trigger point massage and stretching, which I found to not only be relaxing, but helpful. I really liked this massage. It is not the type of massage you typically get at hotels and spas. Generally, there you will find Swedish massages and deep tissues, using oils and lotions. They have their place, and I like those massages. But, I also like massages that help work my muscles and help me stretch. I have found only a few places in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas where I get this type of massage, so I was happy to find reYou Massage through a voucher discount program. Michael Vasta was very professional, well educated and informative. He explained the technique and answered my questions. He uses thai and shiatsu, some of which I have seen in very limited ways before, as well as accupressure to some very limited extent. At first I was worried that I would feel sore following the massage, but today I woke up today pain free and a little smug about getting an exercise-induced outcome without having to exercise. The facility is not fancy (it is a room within a gym), and there are no nice smelling oils and lotions like you will find in other spas. But my eyes are closed during massages anyway! If you are interested in a different kind of massage, and if you really need to stretch, this is something you may like very much. read more

I had a great massage with Michael last week. I'm a long-distance lap swimmer and I work with a computer all day so I've got bad posture and a crazy amount of tension in my back and chest. Michael spent some time explaining how his techniques would work to relieve the tension, and then he and his hands did just that. It felt great. I'm not sure if this type of massage works for everyone, and it seems from reviews, that maybe it's not - but it definitely worked for my aches and pains. It always depends on the practitioner, of course, so I was curious as to what this experience would be like. I found Michael to be extremely personable, very knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about his work. He's very committed to his profession and was happy to talk about it. I've never written a bad review on here, and the only reason I am doing so is not to hurt anyone's feelings or make the place look bad, but to make sure that no one suffers as I have. If you have scoliosis or anything of the sort, BE CAREFUL going here. Before entering, it was required to fill out a medical form, which I thought would be taken more seriously. I told the masseuse beforehand that I have severe scoliosis and to be careful manipulating my spine. Michael Vasta is friendly, very knowledgeable and I'm sure he has great technique and knows what is is doing, but I feel like he didn't really listen to me during the session. When I said "oww, that really hurts" several times, he insisted that it was supposed to be like that and that it was part of the "massage". I told him to focus on my upper back, which is where all of my pain/tension is, and he barely did anything there. I was very relaxed at one point during the massage and even fell asleep for a few mins, but after repeatedly asking him to not push on my legs because it was uncomfortable, all of the relaxation just went away. Also, he put some cushion thing on my one side to even out my spine, I said that was very uncomfortable but he left it anyway. After the massage I started feeling horrible on my walk home. Nauseous, and hours later I felt as if I had been run over by a truck. All of my body hurt, and I had extreme pains up and down my back, pains I didn't have before. I have gotten many deep tissue massages and have NEVER felt this badly. Not only that, all along my spine continued hurting for days after the massage, and a WEEK later I still can not turn to either side without feeling pain. I did not have any pain in my middle back before the massage, and left worse than I was when I went in there. I honestly am afraid he messed something up along my spine because this is not normal pain for me. When I emailed Michael, concerned about all of the pain, he did respond which I was happy to see, and he even checked back a day later which was really nice of him, but he blamed the pain on the little cushion thing he placed under my one side... and the best part is: he said he would like to have me come back to check me out, and that he would "ONLY charge $60". Are you kidding me??!?!!!!!??!!? I should not have to PAY to go back here and deal with a week of pain again. Sorry! I realize he is not a doctor or a miracle worker, but no one should go into a massage expecting relief, and come out feeling 20x worse. read more

I hate to do this, because Joshua was such a nice guy, but my experience here was pretty terrible. First, I booked with a different therapist, more than a month in advance, and was told the week before that I would have to reschedule. If I wanted to see a MT before Christmas I had to schedule with Joshua. First, he was late. Happens. Then, the massage was abrupt, painful at times, and used next to no draping technique. I received no water, no instructions, and next to no attention to the front side of my body. He just rolled me over, did some stretches, and left, never to be seen again. But the worst has been the next week since. I know that deep tissue massage and be intense and leave you sore the next day or two, but is beyond all of that. The next day after the massage I woke up in real pain. I couldn't move my neck or The shoulder he worked on without great stiffness. For the last week and trying to work and now I'm getting constant headaches from it. And I didn't even ask him to concentrate on that. I want to work on my lower back but he pretty much ignored that. I'm giving two stars because he really was a nice guy, but he needs some more education as a massage therapist. read more

It wasn't a typical massage - no oils, lotion or table. I was wearing gym clothes laying face down on a mat with my chest and neck and legs supported under pillows. He massages every vertebrae with the right amount of pressure and worked my shoulders. As skeptical as I was, I walked out feeling completely relaxed and calm. He told me I carry all of my tension in my right shoulder and now I'm focusing more to correct that. I would recommend reYou to anyone. A mix between chiropractor and massage. read more

I definitely recommend Michael Vasta and his Shiatsu Massage. I've had several Shiatsu's before due to recurring shoulder and neck problems and Mike's is definitely one of the best I've had. He is very professional, explains beforehand and during the massage what he is doing and even gives tips on how to improve your posture or how stretching after exercising would alleviate tensions. Don't expect a classic deep tissue or Swedish massage with oils and strokes! Shiatsu is more therapeutic and works with pressure points and stretching. I'm not going to say if Michael Vasta is a good or bad therapist due to my experience being overshadowed after I was instructed to be in my bra and panties. Not wanting to be a prude or irritate, I complied. Immediately upon Laying down, I felt completely uncomfortable while he was doing Thai stretches and shiatsu. I did address him directly after I shared my story with others who were appalled. He apologized and acknowledged he never took a moment to "read" his client and said he will never do massages in underwear unless a person asks. What? I have been going to Yoga for just a short time before I signed up for the massage with Michael and I had been riding a bike for exercise. Not only is it relaxing and rejuvenating, but I've also found it to have long lasting effects on my lower back pain and tension. I got a Thai massage/Shiatsu with Michael and it was incredible. It managed to be both relaxing and therapeutic, which is a hard balance to achieve. After he found out that I was on the tail end of a cold, he worked on my lung meridian and I felt a ton better the next day. He explained what was doing and encouraged deep breathing. Michael is very interested in holistic healing and more than willing to share his expertise. The massage flew by - I would love to do a 1.5 hour massage next time. Highly recommended! Shady business dealings. They don't even honor their own word. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. I had purchased a Living Social deal with reYOU some time ago. A few weeks before the expiration date, I went to schedule my massage and a guy at Optimal said that they would honor the voucher as long as I booked before the expiration date. I happily booked and thought nothing of it. Literally the day after the voucher expired, I get an email from Michael Vasta telling me that they want charge an extra $25 because I'm using the voucher within 2 weeks after the expiration date. I thought this was odd, so I looked into the Living Social refund policy. If reYOU had notified me of this $25 before the expiration date, I could have gotten a refund from LS. This fee was not posted anywhere on their LS deal or on the reYOU website, or in the scheduling site. I'd rather forfeit the voucher than give them another dime. read more

I don't think my upper back has felt this good in....well I honestly don't remember when. I recently had a swedish massage and thought that was great, but my massage tonight was heavenly and I don't even have one complaint. I knew what to expect with the atmosphere based on the previous reviews so that was not a surprise, but I was relaxed throughout the whole hour and Josh's deep tissue techniques were exactly what my tight muscles were asking for. I also liked that Josh took the time to go over my intake form and remind me to tell him if the pressure was to little or too much. It was the best decision for the unrelenting back pain I was experiencing for days. Michael Vasta is an expert in shiatsu/thai massage, which is similar to deep tissue with pressure and stretching. At first I was hesitant about the possible noise as the place is inside a gym, but that was not the case. Joshua gives one of the best Swedish/Deep Tissue massages I've ever had! His fingers are super strong (very important!) and he knows where they are needed most. His techniques are cutting-edge and it's obvious he's had an abundance of training! Joshua asks about any new health issues each time, and consults a reference if it's something that may be affected, to make sure it's ok to treat that area and how. Sadly, this review is over a serious billing dispute and customer service issues with manager Joshua Neidich rather than an issue with the quality of work performed, which was always very good. I had scheduled a massage appointment last month. (I used to schedule these a few days in advance, but because of their online scheduling system not working, I started to schedule them after my previous appointment). A few weeks after scheduling, my massage therapist had to push back an appointment and contacted me through text message. I was extremely busy at the time she contacted me and I didn't look at my calendar at first, but later realized that due to the schedule change it would cause a conflict with being able to do work on my mother's house, who was recovering from cancer treatment. So I tried to reschedule for the following week, which I didn't think would be a big deal considering the massage therapist couldn't make our original appointment anyway. What followed was a charge on my credit card for $195, which I never authorized. I used that credit card for previous transactions but did not want to use this card for any purchases as I'm trying to improve my credit score. Apparently, a 3 massage package was "confirmed" by me and the confirmation was sent to the wrong email address. When I contacted the massage therapist to ask why my credit card was used without my permission, I got referred to her manager, who tried to claim that I authorized the charge because I had authorized previous packages. Additionally, he claimed that there was a "cancellation fee" that I was responsible for of $110 even though the original appointment was changed by the massage therapist. I repeatedly asked for a full refund and repeatedly said that the charge was unauthorized but he refused, so I had to file a fraud report with my credit card company. I strongly suggest that if you use this company that you do not pay by credit card, as they (quite erroneously) believe that this gives them the right to charge your card for future purchases that you may not want or authorize. read more

He made sure he knew my complete medical history and asked me pertinent questions. Since that time, I have been going to see Josh regularly. He continues to be a true professional and incredibly skilled in deep tissue massage. I have never felt unnecessary pain or discomfort after a massage and always feel like my mind and body are benefiting greatly from his skill. As has been mentioned, this is not a spa. It was the best massage experience I have ever had and the atmosphere was comforting.
