Zapata's Mexican Restaurant - Our view from our table :)

Today we were at Zapata's Mexican Restaurant in North Adelaide. They claim to be Adelaide's oldest…read moreMexican restaurant and probably are, being established in 1975. We walked into an almost empty restaurant as dinner service had only just started and a waiter came up to us with no smile and gave us a sense that we had interrupted something really important that he was going to do. It almost made me want to walk out but I've wanted to come back to this place for years so we just followed behind him to our table. He sat us by the window and actually it was nice because we could see what was happening on the street outside and it felt a little more intimate. The disinterested waiter gave us some menus and asked if we wanted to order something to drink. I really wanted to try their sangria but I hadn't seen it on the drink menu so I asked if they did Sangria. He rolled his eyes and using as little words as possible said chastisingly "front". I turned to the front of the drink menu and yes, there it was. Silly me. So I ordered some Sangria and tried not to cry. I have to say, I LOVED that they had Mexican music playing. Loved that! It puts you in the mood. I love the way it's decorated too. If you've been to Montezuma's you'll know what I mean when I say it's not as gaudy as the Montezuma decorations but a more elegant modern Mexican style. (FYI Montezumas is a guilty secret passion for me and gaudy does have it's place!) So back to the menu; I thought there were a lot of what you'd expect to find in a Mexican restaurant in Australia, as well as couple of Mexican inspired dishes. What I should have researched more was the fact that they have half price nacho's on Wednesday's! I had heard people saying these serves are really big and when we ordered a large serve to share as an entree, the disinterested waiter's eyes grew big (Effort) and said "they're big" and I shut him down with a "we're big eaters" and he turned away. Turns out he was right. They were big, but I hate when people say that because my expectation of "big" is not the same as others. Still, they were a big serve and hubby and I easily shared a plate. You'd have trouble getting through this on your own I think! But remember people, although these nacho's are definitely worth coming here for, make sure you come on a Wednesday because they're not cheap. There was nothing to complain about that's for sure! They were delicious! A different waitress came to take our main order and she was lovely. I was so relieved. Hubby went for the Carne a La Tampiquena - Combination plate of barbecue fillet Steak with onion and capsicum, a Chicken & cheese Enchilada coated with hot mole sauce, frijoles & salad. I ordered Chilli Colorado - A typically Mexican dish of hearty beef chunks in a spicy sauce of red chilli served with rich, frijoles and fresh garden salad. Mine was just delicious. It might not look so pretty on the plate but the beef was tender and just so full of flavour. The sauce was a little spicy but not overly so that you lose all taste in what you're eating. The rice was cold which was a little disappointing and the salad wasn't dressed but I enjoyed this dish anyway and it was perfect on this cold Winter's night. Hubby's dish was equally interesting... I'm not sure what he was expecting but when he bit into his steak his eyes glazed over. When he was able to, he told me that it was an excellent cut of steak and one of the most tender steaks he's ever had. The tomato and avocado on his plate was so heavily salted that he couldn't eat it. He kept begging me to try it but why would I want to eat something that I've been told is over salted? No thank you. I'd rather reserve my taste buds for things I'm hoping to like. The chicken and cheese enchilada was an interesting item on his plate too because it was coated in a mole sauce. We didn't really know what this was. He got me to try it as he said it had a sweetness to it. Now sweetness is something I don't mind and I definitely did taste sweetness. I've since looked it up and know what's in a mole sauce. It wasn't unpleasant, and it was good to try something different but I'm not sure that hubby will go for it again. So to sum everything up, we enjoyed our time here despite the efforts of the grumpy waiter - and let me add that the rest of the staff were really very lovely, warm and friendly. The menu was varied, the food was good, the sangria was excellent and the nachos were great (Even better on a Wednesday)

I've seen this place popping up on my Yelp app for weeks now - so I finally gave in and checked it…read moreout! My girlfriend and I visited Zapatas for a 'romantic' date night, having said that - it's definitely not first date food! ----- Zapatas is a brightly lit family restaurant on Melbourne St. It boasts a large menu of traditional and more western Mexican food, along with a pokey and homey feel. The decor is very old fashioned with a straw ceiling buffering warm reds, yellows and browns; stained glass and pictures of famous Mexican freedom fighter Emiliano Zapata are littered throughout. It feels crowded but in a good way, I've never seen Zapatas quiet, ever. ------ We decided to skip entree's and head straight into the mains, I ordered the Tostada with Beef, GF went with the Chica Enchilada (WHICH INCLUDES A TACO) The Tostada is kind of like a bowl made out of the shell of a spring roll it's deep fried but light and puffy with rice inside, beautiful marinated beef, lettuce, cheese, and salsa, guacamole and sour cream to garnish. Served with a side of Refried beans on old fashioned crockery. The Tostada is rich with flavour so very Moorish with every element combining well. The servings here are huge! The enchilada along side a taco is served again on the old crockery with a side of rice and Refried beans, both were tasty and everything you expect, the flavours live and breathe Ol' Mexico. ------ This is once again a very harsh 4, the food is great it is generously proportioned and very tasty. We waited a little longer than I expected, the staff were friendly but didn't go above and beyond. Lastly the Sangria... Oh! The Sangria, was woeful I love Sangria and there are some beauties in Adelaide, Zapatas definitely need to work on theirs. I would never lie and say we didn't have a wonderful time, alas The price of being a 7 time (IN A ROW) family restaurant of the year is the weight of expectation.

I…read morewas lucky enough to not just get a park but also go on a lunchtime where they weren't too busy. The staff were very polite, attentive and easy to talk to. Music filled the small restaurant and gave it a good theme overall. The longest I have ever had to wait there is 45 minutes and it was definitely worth it. I do wish that they were larger though cause there food should be enjoyed by the masses. I order the empanadas. They were three small, tasty "samosa-like" pieces that were filled with chicken, spices, grilled corn and served with guacamole, mexican coriander and tomato. The flavours were exquisite, rich and the food was well presented in a little bowl. Some of the other people who I went with ordered burgers which also looked quite nice. I have also had the burgers before and they are absolutely fantastic. I was lucky enough to let them share a chip with me, and they tasted amazing, they were seasoned in paprika and served with an incredible sauce that reminded me somewhat of a creamy mustard. The burgers had a nice beef patty seasoned with Columbian tomato - a nice sauce of cilantro and tomatoes. All the salad was fresh and the lettuce was shredded well. There was also seasoned onions and cilantro on the side which were nice along with some oven toasted corn chips. The tastes were so nice. I can still taste the meal even after leaving the restaurant almost an hour ago, however they are most pleasant. The dessert was just as good. My waitress described it as being like "creme" caramel. I am glad I ordered it and it was well priced too at just $7. It was custard (served in a bowl shape) with a caramel sauce poured around the edges. It was served slightly warmed which made it impeccable on the palette. Although I am not much of a sweet tooth, that was a great way to finish after the exquisite spices and guacamole from my main meal. Overall, this restaurant has a good balance of the key things that all restaurants should have. The serving proportions were comparable to the "goldilocks theory", not too big, not too small, just right. Foods and spices used were balanced and added to the flavours of key ingredients positively. Pricing was well adjusted and the atmosphere with the music could make one feel as though they were in Mexico having a siesta if they were to just close their eyes for a minute - albeit the decor did help contribute to such a delusion, as the restaurant is well decorated with blackboards that have key mexican culinary definitions, lamps and mexican objects scattered on the shelves. I will be going back (in fact since writing this review, I have gone back twice). A great dining experience and like few others I have ever had before. One little gripe that I have is that the mexican music was a tad loud for conversation but it was not that bad. I thought that Kwik Stix (in the same block) was good, however Lucky Lupitas just takes dining at Bedford Park to the next level. And at $100 for five people with drinks and dessert, the value can not be beaten.

It was a peak lunch (12:30pm) and the food court was full. I got in the queue to order (the slow one). Like many places there are queues for each register and not necessarily 1st come 1st served. As I said, it was busy. but the food orders came out all over the place. - about 5 ordered after me but got their meal before I did!! Not Good. I ordered a Trio of Tacos (soft ones not the hard ones) Chicken with Fresh Salsa and Guac, Pork with Pineapple Salsa and Beef with Red Cabbage, black bean and Habanero Salsa. The line was quite long but moved really quickly. The wait for the food once they took your order wasn't too bad either - I was very impressed that the staff managed to keep chipper and be friendly to people even though they were getting slammed! My only complaint is that as a vegetarian, the veg mix they have in their burritos is a little odd. It might be my personal taste but I wouldn't normally put zucchini and mushrooms in. The black bean mix is very very tasty though. Their mexicrinkles are the best chips that you'll find - covered in salt and spices, they're delicious! A great place to come and grab something that's not too unhealthy for you. Yes, it's fast food BUT they do seem to be slightly healthier for you than other options.

Something something smoked chicken, something something spiced pork or beef and blackbean all…read morewrapped up in a soft taco. La Cantina's menu is hardly easy to describe nor did I know half of the ingredients featured in each soft taco but when meat is described to you as "smoked" or "spiced" I'm already ordering 4. This bright orange truck has been very prevalent on weekdays throughout the city, serving up soft tacos only to the public at $5 each or $9 for 2. You can follow them on Twitter or Facebook for locations each day. They seem to have made friends with Raw Thirst and Burger Theory so be prepared to make a difficult choice if they are also around on the day. Arguably I couldn't choose and justified that having a Raw Thirst Alkaliser Juice meant I could have a not so healthy taco for lunch. I chose the Vegetarian (Zucchini, Mushroom and Corriander) and Smoked Chicken with Pico de Gallo, Sour Cream and Corriander). I didn't make friends with salad that day as I found the Vegetarian to lack a certain kick - great if you don't like spicy food. This is probably also because the Smoked Chicken overpowered every bite of my Vegetarian taco with so much oomph, spice and smokiness that I was shouting "arriba, arriba, underlay, underlay," from the food truck! Note: If you have any kind of appetite you will want 2, maybe 4 tacos as they are only served half size. The service is fantastic and quick with a wonderful little crew happily cooking away in the truck. Unfortunately the van seems to have come from the 1980's and continuously pumps out petrol fumes while you're waiting for your food. It's a shame because I'm sure the smell from the cooked meats would be shining through if this wasn't the case.

But now they're out on the streets selling tacos & Mexican sodas at spots all over Adelaide. I'm out of the city Monday-Friday for most of the day, which means it's pretty hard for me to chase these guys down. But thankfully a Friday morning city commitment meant I could pop down to see them. At the time there were 3 taco options available, beef, pork, & vegetarian. They're $5 each or 2 for $9, which is a pretty reasonable deal and in line with most fixed place Cantinas in Adelaide. I enjoyed both of mine (the beef with black beans, & the mushroom and zucchini). My only complaint would be that I felt there was a bit too much going on with them. I would have loved some more defined flavours. They were nice to eat, but they didn't blow my mind. Their truck is bright and colourful, easy to spot, so keep an eye out. They're definitely worth trying, and I'm sure they'll just get better over time. If you buy a Mexican soda make sure you have a bottle opener or get them to open it for you, these aren't screw tops.

A quiet little Mexican place full of Culture with a warm, relaxing atmosphere…read more I enjoyed the culture throughout the restaurant displayed through painted walls of Santa Muerte among other things and little idols scattered about the dining. Although this did not hold my attention for the duration of the 1 hour & 45 minute wait before our meals were served. This is my first time eating at this place so i am not sure if this is a usual occurrence and am happy to give it the benefit of the doubt (hence the 3 stars) However i did notice that others were also experiencing long wait times and it was not all that busy. The meals tasted authentic and were enjoyable if not a little underwhelming. Definitely not the best i have had and were rather small in portion sizes than i have come to expect from other Mexican Restuarants. All in all a fine little place but the service and meals did not scrub up to other competitors out there and this really let it down for me. Perhaps this place is not trying to be more than what it is. It seems to me that it would shine mostly for the true authentic Mexican lovers out there rather than the rest of us casual enjoyers of the Mexican Cuisine.
