I've seen this place popping up on my Yelp app for weeks now - so I finally gave in and checked it…read moreout! My girlfriend and I visited Zapatas for a 'romantic' date night, having said that - it's definitely not first date food! ----- Zapatas is a brightly lit family restaurant on Melbourne St. It boasts a large menu of traditional and more western Mexican food, along with a pokey and homey feel. The decor is very old fashioned with a straw ceiling buffering warm reds, yellows and browns; stained glass and pictures of famous Mexican freedom fighter Emiliano Zapata are littered throughout. It feels crowded but in a good way, I've never seen Zapatas quiet, ever. ------ We decided to skip entree's and head straight into the mains, I ordered the Tostada with Beef, GF went with the Chica Enchilada (WHICH INCLUDES A TACO) The Tostada is kind of like a bowl made out of the shell of a spring roll it's deep fried but light and puffy with rice inside, beautiful marinated beef, lettuce, cheese, and salsa, guacamole and sour cream to garnish. Served with a side of Refried beans on old fashioned crockery. The Tostada is rich with flavour so very Moorish with every element combining well. The servings here are huge! The enchilada along side a taco is served again on the old crockery with a side of rice and Refried beans, both were tasty and everything you expect, the flavours live and breathe Ol' Mexico. ------ This is once again a very harsh 4, the food is great it is generously proportioned and very tasty. We waited a little longer than I expected, the staff were friendly but didn't go above and beyond. Lastly the Sangria... Oh! The Sangria, was woeful I love Sangria and there are some beauties in Adelaide, Zapatas definitely need to work on theirs. I would never lie and say we didn't have a wonderful time, alas The price of being a 7 time (IN A ROW) family restaurant of the year is the weight of expectation.

I've had the steak, the chicken, enchilada and the salad too... But what keeps me coming back is the nachos. Piled high and packed with punch (not forgetting half price on Wednesday) they make a great starter to share or meal all by themself. The atmosphere has a great vibe to it and you quickly grow fond of the squishyness of some areas. The friendly and accommodating staff have no issues with large groups who want to split the bill, just let them know on booking and they'll have numbers all over the table for you. Margaritas all round to start the night off and a shot of Patron to end, and you're set for a great night out.

Something something smoked chicken, something something spiced pork or beef and blackbean all…read morewrapped up in a soft taco. La Cantina's menu is hardly easy to describe nor did I know half of the ingredients featured in each soft taco but when meat is described to you as "smoked" or "spiced" I'm already ordering 4. This bright orange truck has been very prevalent on weekdays throughout the city, serving up soft tacos only to the public at $5 each or $9 for 2. You can follow them on Twitter or Facebook for locations each day. They seem to have made friends with Raw Thirst and Burger Theory so be prepared to make a difficult choice if they are also around on the day. Arguably I couldn't choose and justified that having a Raw Thirst Alkaliser Juice meant I could have a not so healthy taco for lunch. I chose the Vegetarian (Zucchini, Mushroom and Corriander) and Smoked Chicken with Pico de Gallo, Sour Cream and Corriander). I didn't make friends with salad that day as I found the Vegetarian to lack a certain kick - great if you don't like spicy food. This is probably also because the Smoked Chicken overpowered every bite of my Vegetarian taco with so much oomph, spice and smokiness that I was shouting "arriba, arriba, underlay, underlay," from the food truck! Note: If you have any kind of appetite you will want 2, maybe 4 tacos as they are only served half size. The service is fantastic and quick with a wonderful little crew happily cooking away in the truck. Unfortunately the van seems to have come from the 1980's and continuously pumps out petrol fumes while you're waiting for your food. It's a shame because I'm sure the smell from the cooked meats would be shining through if this wasn't the case.

But now they're out on the streets selling tacos & Mexican sodas at spots all over Adelaide. I'm out of the city Monday-Friday for most of the day, which means it's pretty hard for me to chase these guys down. But thankfully a Friday morning city commitment meant I could pop down to see them. At the time there were 3 taco options available, beef, pork, & vegetarian. They're $5 each or 2 for $9, which is a pretty reasonable deal and in line with most fixed place Cantinas in Adelaide. I enjoyed both of mine (the beef with black beans, & the mushroom and zucchini). My only complaint would be that I felt there was a bit too much going on with them. I would have loved some more defined flavours. They were nice to eat, but they didn't blow my mind. Their truck is bright and colourful, easy to spot, so keep an eye out. They're definitely worth trying, and I'm sure they'll just get better over time. If you buy a Mexican soda make sure you have a bottle opener or get them to open it for you, these aren't screw tops.

A quiet little Mexican place full of Culture with a warm, relaxing atmosphere…read more I enjoyed the culture throughout the restaurant displayed through painted walls of Santa Muerte among other things and little idols scattered about the dining. Although this did not hold my attention for the duration of the 1 hour & 45 minute wait before our meals were served. This is my first time eating at this place so i am not sure if this is a usual occurrence and am happy to give it the benefit of the doubt (hence the 3 stars) However i did notice that others were also experiencing long wait times and it was not all that busy. The meals tasted authentic and were enjoyable if not a little underwhelming. Definitely not the best i have had and were rather small in portion sizes than i have come to expect from other Mexican Restuarants. All in all a fine little place but the service and meals did not scrub up to other competitors out there and this really let it down for me. Perhaps this place is not trying to be more than what it is. It seems to me that it would shine mostly for the true authentic Mexican lovers out there rather than the rest of us casual enjoyers of the Mexican Cuisine.

Absolutely delicious!!!…read more Had the seafood burrito, chock full of fish and prawns and cheese toasted to perfection. The rice and salad freshens up the dish. Don't ignore this place on a busy road. It's a tranquil setting inside and the staff are super super friendly. Prices are pretty good. Mexican can be very expensive but $17 for a burrito (a very filling main meal) was good value!
