This is actually the worst restaurant I have been to in a while. We would have been better off going to our local fast food place. The service was slow and inattentive. The plates from our entrée and mains weren't cleared while we were there. This is mainly because there were only 2 wait staff on for a restaurant that was surprisingly filled with paying customers. Montezuma's has a number of stores around Adelaide, but I have only ever been to the one on Melbourne Street. It's conveniently located in the CBD and has a wide range of Mexican food and drinks. However, this place is not that great if you're after authentic Mexican food. The burritos were pretty sloppy and the tacos were slightly dry and lacked flavour. It would probably be acceptable if the prices were more humble, but everything is expensive! The sangria was the highlight of my night, along with sitting outdoors and munching on nachos that tasted like American fast food. If that's all it takes, then I could be the next Masterchef. I've heard mixed opinions about the place, but overall it wasn't the best experience. The atmosphere is alright though, probably due to the sangria. read more

I must start by saying that I LOVE Mexican food, and Montezumas has always been a favourite of mine. We used to frequent the one in Glenelg, but the service/food has gotten really poor lately, so we ventured out to North Adelaide. The food is great. Started with the Queso Fundido (cheese dip and corn chips), love it. It's not unusual for my husband to clean the bowl with his fingers after all the corn chips are eaten, it's that yummy! My go-to meals are the Nachos, and the Montezumas Delight. The nachos are nice, however I do find it disappointing that we have to order side bowls of sour cream and guacamole as they don't come with it. The montezumas delight is great, and definitely a healthier option than nachos. It has a tortilla on the bottom, then is topped with frijoles, cheese, salsa and a bit of sour cream. Topping that is a chopped vegetable salad, with pieces of apple through it. The combination of flavours is great and when you get a piece of the apple, yum! The staff were great on my latest visit. We were greeted warmly (and they didn't care at all that we were a tad late for our reservation). Montezumas definitely isn't fancy or trendy, the food is rustic and there's no line-up of hipsters outside the door. But that is precisely what I love about it. Don't get me wrong, I love hip little cafés as much as the next guy (if not more), but sometimes you just want a nice relaxed meal in a casual setting. REALLY wish we hadn't! such a disappointing visit ... will never go back again ... we entered and warmly addressed the waitress ... who was an asian woman who'd clearly forgotten how to smile ... atmosphere was confronting ... seemed grimy, seedy, cramped ... did not feel clean at all! almost like a night club ... the morning after a hard night of drunk people spilling their drinks all over the floor ... and everything's sticky decor was tacky and over the top ... some areas gruesome spiderwebs ... prices were shocking and BEYOND RIDICULOUS! Mexican food is meant to be cheap ... 52 MILLION people living in poverty in Mexico some of them living on less than $4 a day! can't imagine any one of them wld fork out 23 bucks for a burrito! in the U.S. ... between $4.50 for a beans and cheese burrito to between 5 to 10 bucks for a fully loaded AUTHENTIC burrito! like i said ... shocking! after waiting almost 20 minutes ... a tiny entree came out cldn't figure out what it was ... looked nothing like quac pastie ... corn chips were super salty and stale ... cldn't get past one dip weren't keen to see any more... so got up and left walked across the road and the waitress chased us ... so aggressive I almost thought she was going to slam me to the ground and hog tie me ... sorry ... Excellent value for money, nice to get my Mexican fix. Service is friendly, food is very similar to Berryhill, the Texan Mexican franchise. Not posh, not too upmarket, but with the normal favourites. We usually get a jug of the Sangria and a jug of frozen lemon margarita. Best value are the combo meals, with rice and beans or salad. Note, this place IS open on Tuesdays. read more

I've heard mixed reviews about this place in the past, and from the different places around Adelaide. They've been around for a few years now, and they were probably the first Mexican/Latin-themed restaurants I had encountered in Australia. The bright colours, and mustard yellow paint is enough to attract anyone's attention, and gives off a casual, peppy vibe that seems to welcome any part of any number. The inside, however, can feel crammed and I've had to hold my handbag in fear of hitting the back of a chair (or someone's head). There are booths good for 4 on the sides, and a few tables scattered about. I'm going to guess that the location itself is heritage listed, or at least protected, which I understand can make creating an atmosphere quite difficult. I liked the coloured wooden poles, and some of the decors on the side, but the numerous dolls and trinkets hanging from the ceiling did not seem to help much. They seemed to make the place even smaller, and were kind of an overkill. I was glad to see that there was a bit more than burritos and nachos available on the menu. The range of drinks is also good, including frosty margaritas and some Mexican beers (beyond Corona and Sol). I ordered their Mole Poblano - a chicken dish apparently first made by the nuns of Puebla - but I also got to see the servings for some of their other dishes, like enchiladas, burritos, and their chilli con carne. And they are big...but maybe not quite worth the price. The dishes seemed that they were baked on the plate, leaving the rice crunchy and dry. The Mole Poblano's sauce had a sweet and spicy nutty (but not overbearing) flavour, but I felt there was not enough to really appreciate it (and definitely not enough to go with the dry rice). Impressively, I was given 1/4 of a chicken with my dish, but it was also somewhat dry. The accompanying banana and pineapple fritters, crumbed with coconut, tasted nice, but seemed to sit idly to the sides as separate snacks when I expected their flavours to be more integrated into the recipe - especially the coconut. Will have to try their other dishes next time. Friendly service, and good to keep warm on a cold day. I also enjoyed the little factual tidbits on their menu. read more

This place gets stars for their colourful and fun vibe and great atmosphere. This is a fun casual place to go with friends, however it is always really busy with people eating, chatting and having a relaxed drink. The food, on the other hand is just 'okay' for the price. Not the best Mexican food about, it seems almost a bit lazy. The wait is usually pretty long too - but I always seem to go there when it's crazy busy. Love their nachos - the chilli ones. And the combination dinners are amazing BUT huge. They serve authentic mexican that is not spicey but you can add chilli (which we did). What I love to do at Montezumas is get the 3 dips combination to share with a friend and drinking sangria whilst soaking up the atmosphere. Perfect for a casual girly night catch up. This place is also good for large groups as they dont mind a bit of noise! read more

There's just something about this place that keeps me coming back. Firstly; the interior is so authentic. It looks like inner city Mexico inside. As for the staff; they're lovely and attentive, with a good knowledge of their menu. As for the menu itself, it's very extensive and caters for the needs of vegetarians as well as people who need gluten free options. I personally love the tacos and nachos here, they're absolutely to die for. They also offer mexican drinks such as sangria and desserts including churros. This is my go-to mexican restaurant. Some things here are delicious. Some things aren't so much. It took me a while to work out out. Two visits, in fact. The conclusion we came to was that anything that didn't have the chicken in it was alright. I've heard of seafood extender, but was unaware of Monetzuma's new and highly secret poultry extender. The beef tacos and fajitas I had were really quite okay. The impression I had was that it was slightly dumbed down mexican as far as many of the flavours were concerned, particularly the spiciness. You can ask for a bit more heat, but I think the default standard should be 'hot', and all the weaklings should have to go through the unmanly shame of having to ask for less hots. The service was alright, but I thought it was pretty noisy, and as I'm not great at hearing people sitting next to me when it is otherwise silent, I had a hard time maintaining a conversation. read more

When you think of Mexican food, you think of earthy flavors and generous portions at a reasonable price. It's not fine dining, it's just good food. Montezumas left a little to be desired. It's a bit over priced and the taquitos were quite dry and bland. The beef taco was seasoned horribly and was saved by the taco shell. The tortillas themselves were fantastic, as was the largely gluten free menu. Atmosphere was over the top tacky, service was slow but sincere. Good range of Mexican craft beers. I am amazed that this place is still in business. The food is the same slop served slightly differently. You can see from the photos that this place serves food worthy of UN food drop. Nothing more. The people that go here and enjoy it must have either lived a culinary sheltered life, or are hanging on to some romantic distant memory of a good time here. Every time i visit this restaurant i always come home feeling sick. I have tried a few dishes from this place and have been disappointed. The prices are expensive and the food isnt the best. The staff are nice but im forever waiting for my meal everytime. Their tacos are gross and have made me incredibly ill afterwards. Will never come back to this place. For a while I stood outside trying to pronounce the name to a friend on the phone, eventually I just said "That scary face sign on Melbourne Street". Touting itself as the 'Original' my suspicions were piqued against this claim. Who's to say the Aztec Emperor himself didn't have a chain of Mexican restaurants before this was built? The food had their own traditional Mexican style. Instead of the foil wrapped and stuffed burrito that you'll get from Zamberos or Burp, you'll get simple portions of tortilla, meat, beans, rice, and a dollop of sour cream. The chicken was a tad bland unfortunately. But the beef dishes pack more flavour, it would make Hernan Cortes spin in his grave. The menu is wide and varies, there are bound to be some gems if you're feeling adventurous. It's definitely an enjoyable experience with a group, try a few of the hundreds of dips they have to serve. It provides a nice aperitif for the meal. I was expecting perhaps a contemporary spin on traditional foods from Aztec culture. Since Montezumas is a franchise restaurant I would assume the menu and food quality should at least be very similar at all locations. I recently visited the Glenelg location and was totally disappointed. First, let me say having lived in the U.S for 20 plus years "Tex Mex" food was always a favourite whether eating in the U.S or on many of my excursions to Mexico. I believe I know what good Mexican food is and the food served up at the Glenelg location was nothing short of disgusting. I ordered the Durango Combo.....the enchiladas were obviously pre frozen and tasted like a cheap TV dinner. Also, they cook their food in convection ovens which is totally acceptable as long as you don't include the side dishes....hence what they call Spanish rice was burnt, totally dried out and inedible. I also had the Queso entree before this and should have got a clue what was about to come. If you advertise "authentic Mexican food" then at least serve " Queso" not some cream cheese dip with some hot sauce on the top. After spending $87.00 on dinner for two which included 2 beers I left this place feeling like I had been robbed. A positive note....the wait staff were great! read more
