I am so happy I found this place thru yelp. I was craving some good Asian food that is not Vietnamese. Their Bao is perfect for a snack or light meal. I personally loved their spicy fried chicken bao rather than pork belly bao. The chicken was crispy and had the perfect spiciness. Pork belly was good but did not have melt in my mouth experience. The pork was bit dry. I did takeout so when I got home, bao was already bit cold but still soft and tasted the subtle sweetness. Lotus root chips were also yummy. They were seasoned well but I found some stale non-crispy pieces. If they were all crispy, then would have been perfect! The service is fast and great. Finally a small business that takes American Express credit cards for no fee in Australia! I would definitely like to come back and try other items when I am back in Adelaide. read more

These little bao, summer rolls and lotus chips were pretty darn good! It was just a bit pricy in my opinion. I think it might have been around $25 for this and a little box drink of winter melon tea. Blackboard painted walls, wooden share tables and chairs and brightly coloured menu items bring a little chinese cheer to this end of Pirie St. And already these guys have their "regulars" lining up for their freshly made take away asian salads, bao and rice paper rolls. Fresh beef salad again today sir? I wasn't game enough to try the unagi bao (eel) but I did take the plunge and order the KFC and silken tofu. I'm not really into the whole anonymous meat and processed bean thing but I was genuinely impressed. The chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, spiced with a pepper sauce, the tofu literally was silken and tasted more like the chilli ranch style dressing than of cardboard. A crisp, fresh cabbage and carrot salad to top it off left me forgetting I had just eaten fried chicken and tofu. With meal deals of $11.50 for 2 bao/rice paper rolls + side + drink it's hard to go wrong but I totally could have eaten more. The meals are so light and fresh (and yes a little bite sized) I would probably order a rice paper roll to my dish as well next time. So I have wondered a long time if there was anyone in Adelaide that makes Bau (Chinese Taco) and YES there is. The place is called Mamachau, They do 4 flavours, 2 meat and 2 veg, with some added salads wrapped in a steamed rice flour Bau. I tried the Master Stock Pork (So juicy and tasty and a KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) with salad and again it was so delicious. Other items on the menu are a variety of rice paper cold rolls, salads and some rice bowls. (that I've yet to try) If the Bau are anything to go by this place is a HIT of Asian Fusion Goodness. read more

If you need lunch on the run or if you really love a cheap tasty eat in the City, you have made it to the right destination. You can get 2 Bao, side & a drink for $11.50. Otherwise a range of meal deals for around $10-$15 inclusive of a drink. What, you've never tried a Bao? We can clearly not be friends until you do. They are a Vietnamese treat. It is a steamed sweet bun various delicious fillings. They are almost like your Asian version of a taco. In fact, they call them tacos here. If you want to be naughty get that KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) Bao, you wont regret it! Ok, so some of us are a little more health conscious. If that is you, try some of their cold rolls. Last week my girlfriend sent me a photo of some delicious looking pork belly in a white bun with some slaw and sauce. She knows that pork belly is my favorite. Which is how I find myself at Mamachau at lunch on Friday. I decided to try 3 of the Bao (or Asian Taco's if you will). The Chicken, The Tofu and the Pork Belly. The Tofu was good, with out being great. But the other two...off the hook good. The pork had a hell of a lot of flavor to it and the chicken was nice and crispy. And at $3.50 each - great value!! I had the pork belly and the KFC bao and boy was I in heaven!!! Superb little street food type place that has a few tables and chairs to sit or simply grab and go. The KFC bao was my favourite and I just wish I had ordered like 2 more!!!! Great crispy chicken with a juicy tender bite and perfect sauce to boot! Mamachau = Wow! Mamachau's made an appearance at Wild at Hart (a new farmers market down at Port Adelaide) for their grand opening. My mum got to try Mamachau's that night. Asian tacos my mum said, really good she said. She wasn't wrong! After a sweet chocolate overload at Koko Black I had to of course feed the yang to my yin through the form of a savoury delight. The concept of asian tacos intrigued me and had to see what my mum was raving on about. Two tacos, a side and a drink for $11.50? I was easily sold! KFC bao: Asian slaw, kimchi mayo & korean style chicken. I loved the little hint of mint in the slaw, the tanginess of the mayo and that crunch of the chicken all encased in that soft cloud-like bao. Pork bao: Master-stock pork belly, pickled mustard greens, hoisin, nuts & coriander. The pork just melted in my mouth, incredibly tender. Who knew such a small piece of pork could be so jam packed with flavour. The pickled mustard greens brought a lovely sour balance to this bao. Lotus chips: I loved the crispiness of these, they weren't oily at all and the seasoning almost had a Smith's chips BBQ flavour to them. Seriously good! Whoa! Before the nitty-gritty --- this place, if you want to find it, is located not on King W. but rather on Pirie St.. Why is it advertised as King William, not sure. But, it does seem to be gaining fame and recognition quickly, so ask someone if you get lost. Food -- well priced (e.g., $3.5 a Bau, $6 for 2 rolls), and love that the menu is small yet the food is quality. Bau - good, as described by Lee and Stefan. Chips - like any tuber-based chip, but with a rad shape. Other stuff I don't know but will let you know when I return (and will return). Staff are friendly, place has spunk. Had some pork belly tacos and a spring roll for lunch, the tacos were really fresh and tasty, the spring roll was a spring roll, but was pretty good. The menu is spread across 3 walls, with little guidance of how to order. Simplify the menu/order process and it will be much easier, especially when they are busy during the lunch rush.
