Pork Belly Stirfry with green beans - Special Board
    Anita D.

Gin long is one of those super cool Asian fusion restaurants around Adelaide that earns a great reputation for being funky and serving up some really cool dishes. It is more Thai influenced. The set up here is really modern, clean and arty. They have a lot of different seating options, which is great for different sized groups or couples. I really love the feel of this restaurant, it is very open with lot's of things going on. You get a great view of the action no matter where you are sitting. The staff here are really great. They are very attentive and make sure that you have everything you need. They give you enough time to order and make recommendations to what you might. I love great service! The food here is very good. Flavours are balanced and are fresh. Last time I dined here I tried their Pork Belly Stirfry with Green Beans. WOW, that pork was cooked so well. It had crispy skin on it and was packed full of flavour. Totally ate it up fast! I recommend you check this place out if you have a big group of people. They have a great banquet special that will fill you all up real cheap!

Oh harro little cantina, why you so busy? Maybe it's your eretric atmosphere or your menu that oh so fly... Or perhaps it's that speedy service that mean you not wait so long to dine? All in all I wuv you long time! Gin Long Canteen literally buzzes. Excited patrons dine in booths, at long share tables or at the bar overlooking the flaming woks and chaos in the kitchen (best seat in the house by the way). The menu is very thai inspired with fresh salads and pan fried seafood to spicy curry, noodles and crispy quail, there is a lot of choice for the non vegos amongst us. What I love about the menu though is that everything comes with some sort of fresh salad of coriander, mint and chillies or caramalised onions and basic greens. Crispy quail that ironically tasted like KFC chicken (in a really damn good way) and a fresh grilled prawn salad with lime and lemongrass dressing were the highlights for me. As mentioned by Susie and John, you also can't eat here without a cocktail, beer or wine to go with your menu. A couple of words of warning: Do not order the crispy barramundi. The crumbed fish fingers that were presented beautifully in a fried barra lacked flavour and flare unlike all the other dishes. Drink cocktails prior to or after your meal. Things like mandarin daiquiris don't go well with* the food (that was my fault in ordering). Order their beautiful wine and beer that is paired really nicely for eating thai. And if you don't have a long time? Sit at their 30 mins for 2 or 45 mins for 3 or 4 booth. And don't get overwhelmed when they set a timer on you. This vibrant canteen adds life and style to dreary O'Connell, and I can tell it will be awound for a wong twime!

2 Ramli Sliders, $6 each ($12 for both). The Lamb salad in the back ground for $19.

I'd like to come back to this restaurant on all my Adelaide trips! It's one of my faves, I'm a fan of asian fusion. We've been here for both lunch and dinner, always getting really efficient and fast service. There's a full one bar serving cocktails and drinks - we tried the lychee cider. Frankly, wasn't a fan of the product, tasted like a boring cider to me! Not the fault of the restaurant tho, they just source it. We were a bit ambitious on our recent trip. Between 2 we had the soft shell crab $13, curry puffs ($8 for 3), asian lamb salad $19, and 2 Ramli Sliders ($6 each). Check out the photos, food was delicious! Spent $62 for 2, was stuffed and includes drinks. Oh btw, the waitresses are really pretty too. Think the owner enjoys the hiring proces!

It was a hot autumn night, Tuesday and the place is well patronized, and we were seated at the bench at the bar. Not designed to be seated for a long period of time, that's the point, in out next? We ordered sugar cane soda drinks, forget it, not even a hint of sugar cane as one had expected. We started with a Vietnamese salad and the soft shell crab entree size. Salad was rather ordinary n not enough 'kick' as a Vietnamese salad should, that aside, the entree came soon after. There were crispy n still juicy, not bad for frozen food. The curry which sat under these crab was yum, just went well with the crab, would have preferred more spice to it but adequate for the general public. As we had been warned not to order everything at once, we were ready to order our next plate of food, been eyeing off the crispy pork on the specials board for quite a while but was told they have sold out when came to ordering. Perhaps that taught us a lesson that we should have ordered that first up and not being such a stickler to entree, main etc The alternative was the prawn dumplings in curry sauce. They were huge dumplings, not refined in the wrap but dumplings - prawns wrapped in pastry. The sauce made up for the 'ugly' dumplings, they were screaming out for the yummy sauce to go with every mouthful, am glad they were generous with the sauce. (As Manu of MKR would have preferred). Feeling greedy, we ordered our last 2 dishes of chicken satay n pad Thai with chicken. Was disappointed with the miserable 2 small pieces of rice cakes on the plate of satay sticks (have a look at Lee's photos, they were big pieces 4 months ago! ) not fair! The rice cakes were dry, left in the open for too long n dried up? Perhaps they should have left them in bigger chunks n won't 'dry out'. Pad Thai - generous meat portions to noodles, should have taken note about asking for extra spice, will there be a next time? Will see. The fried up tofu pieces were dry, would have been better without them. Overall, staff were friendly enough n strict order to clear the bench soon the plates were empty? Well trained n good move as there's not much space between 2 people with those huge mains plates. We were even bade goodbye when we left, well done service staff! One typical Asian culture not to be missed - box of tissues instead of napkins, well at least they are not toilet rolls which one finds in Asian countries at a food store / court.

Mekong Thai is pretty great - none of the syrupy, tasteless, oily stuff you might get at mediocre Thai restaurants. The frontage is quite distinctive - gated off by an curlicued iron gate. There is outdoor seating, a nice tiled pergola section with wooden seating and then the indoor area. The decor itself is a little old - nothing special. The service is very friendly and not too invasive. And if you're not eating socially, there is a great big pile of magazines - National Geographics and woman's mags. You can get takeaway here - it isn't super fast - but it is very cheap at lunch time. Eating in is just as good, but a little bit more expensive, especially at dinner. Some of my favourite dishes: tom yum soup (tangy and fresh), beef rendang, massamun (not too sweet, which I hate), and the chicken larb salad. If you're vegetarian, they offer an equally delicious and extensive vegetarian menu - I'd recommend the pad thai.

My friends set me a challenge, find somewhere near Hindley street - not too heavy on price and another friend had a craving for laksa. So then I thought, why not try Mekong Thai, it seem to tick all the right boxes? So after work, my colleagues and I journeyed into town and sat down to peruse the menu, it had your typical Malaysian/Thai dishes but I already knew what I wanted. My friend and I ordered the seafood laksa and my other friend had the pad thai. For a Wednesday night it was fairly busy, there were groups still in work gear, couples and tourists staying at nearby accommodation. You can choose to sit alfresco style in the outdoor area or sit inside and watch the chefs cook your meal through the open view screen. Just a note that if you choose to sit in the outdoor area, yes you can enjoy some people watching but beware the colourful characters down Hindley street might heckle a innocent restaurant patron! We weren't in any particular hurry but it did seem to take an awful long time before our meals arrived. One of my pet peeves is when meals do not come out together and you urge your friends to start their meal while you awkwardly watch them eat. My friend had half eaten her pad thai when our seafood laksa came out, it looked tasty enough but that was the only good thing to report. The taste just wasn't up to scratch. It was way too sweet, there was more beansprouts then noodles, the soup was thin and wait - where was my seafood? I fished around and only scooped out some chicken pieces. My companion returned her laksa back to add some seafood but I ate mine as I had already waited long enough and I was hungry. To be fair, the owner was very apologetic, he explained they had a new chef in training and throughout our dining experience and he was very attentive to our table. However the total service and food experience wasn't the best I've experienced but maybe that just wasn't a good night for them.

It's pretty obvious at night if you were driving to the city. And so, when we passed by it again tonight, we decided to give it a try. U-turn it is. The restaurant walls are painted dark red(both interior and exterior), and the dim lighting makes the ambiance pretty romantic/warm if there's few customers(however, it's not likely, as the place was soon crowded with people). Also ,the place is furnished with lots of Buddhas statues, paintings and mirrors. Tonight we ordered Kow Dom(or boiled rice), Golden wings, spring rolls and Four flavour fish. The fish is basically deep fried breaded fish mixed with broccoli, long bean, capsicum and smothered with the creamy and tangy 4 flavour sauce. Let me see... umm.. I can taste sweet, sour, spicy, and salty! Yum! Overall my experience would be a 3 star because I waited like 20-25 mins for my mains after the entries were served. But for the good cooking and taste of the four flavour fish, it's a 4 star for Tongue Thai'd. YUM. Will return. Edit: Pardon for the lack of pictures, as everything snapped there turns out to be soooo red that I decided not to post it.
