Wifey lazy to cook dinner tonight, so decided to eat out. While driving to city everyday(via Henley Beach Road), I always passed by this dark red restaurant near Mile End. It's pretty obvious at night if you were driving to the city. And so, when we passed by it again tonight, we decided to give it a try. U-turn it is. The restaurant walls are painted dark red(both interior and exterior), and the dim lighting makes the ambiance pretty romantic/warm if there's few customers(however, it's not likely, as the place was soon crowded with people). Also ,the place is furnished with lots of Buddhas statues, paintings and mirrors. Tonight we ordered Kow Dom(or boiled rice), Golden wings, spring rolls and Four flavour fish. The fish is basically deep fried breaded fish mixed with broccoli, long bean,capsicum and smothered with the creamy and tangy 4 flavour sauce. Let me see... umm.. I can taste sweet, sour, spicy, and salty! Yum! Overall my experience would be a 3 star because I waited like 20-25 mins for my mains after the entries were served. But for the good cooking and taste of the four flavour fish, it's a 4 star for Tongue Thai'd. YUM. Will return. After my travels in Thailand, I struggle to find a place in Adelaide that can replicate the taste, sights and sounds back home. Of course it will never be the same but Tongue Thai'd comes in at a close second. Located near my primary place of residence, I have frequented this place on many occasions and I have never had a bad meal or experience. Whether it was for lunch or dinner, every companion that joined me walked out impressed, appetite whetted and glowing from their generous hospitality. The lady that served us was absolutely adorable and would bend over backwards to look after each patron. Nothing was too hard, she was a real gem! The decor of this place itself is a feast for the eyes. At night this restaurants glows from outside with a warm red light enticing motorists on busy Henley Beach Road to visit. Inside the attention to detail in their decorations was gorgeous. The outdoor area is like a hidden touch of paradise, it is covered and takes on a very laid back, trendy feel with its zen buddha, water features and decorative art on display. Now my favourite part is of course the food! I have to say one of my absolute favourite dish of all time is there signature eggplant dish - I often fantasize about it as it really is amazing! The barramundi with seafood was a winner, my partner loves their green curry and everything of the special board looks delicious. And the serves a very generous so make sure you bring your appetite with you! It can get quite busy on Friday and Saturday nights so best to make reservations and make some exception for a bit of a noise and a bit longer of a wait then normal. But trust me - the food is well worth the wait! read more

I have decided that someday when I get my Siberian Husky I will name it after Thai food. Saki, Cho-Chi, Pad-Thai. Clearly I'm onto something with this name ideology. I must admit when I was taken here I was expecting to step out onto Gougar Street, which is sort of default when it comes to Asian here in Adelaide. However much to my surprise, I got out of the car only to be exposed with the sound and vision of Henley Beach Road. So, I walked in, I looked around, and I approved. The restaurant was busy and of a substantial size, with three distinctive meal areas: A large front room, a small back room, and a courtyard. Décor trend = On trend! So far, so good. Then it was time for the food... Ok, now I'm not even going to lie. I ate heaps and therefore tried A LOT of the Tongue Thai'd menu. Too much perhaps. Waaay too much. Oh well. My tummy may have been full, but at least it was also happy! Some of my favourites on the menu included the Thai beef salad, red beef curry and the shrimp-less (Yay) Pad-Thai. It's true that these options were enough to keep me devouring happily, however! It then got even better. A few words of advice for your order: The eggplant dish AND the mango chicken yellow curry (check the specials menu). O.M.G. The latter especially was heavenly refreshing, especially in the height of the Australian Summer. It was simply -dare I say it- orgasmic! It's an extensive menu, for an extensive feed. Hence expect all the meals/names I mentioned in the first sentence of this review, and then also expect so much more. Thus eating here is not a task designed for the weak! ESPECIALLY if you get a raw chilli in your serving like a couple of my friends did. Poor souls. Lastly, some words from the Dalai Lama, which were conveniently written on the wall behind my table, entitled instructions for life: "Take into account that great love and great achievement includes great risk." I have eaten food from all over Thailand on my many trips there, This is not completely traditional, but is probably "the best you can do" with the produce avaliable. The decor and atmosphere is strange, the music is a bit odd and loud but over all i like the place. The food isnt too expensive and you definitely get a good enough serving. This must be one of the best Thai restaurants I've eaten at. I ordered a Thai vegan salad and they accommodated without question. The second time I went there we ordered a variety of dishes and although the salad was different to the first one I had eaten there, it was still an amazing, fresh, light salad. I would have missed this place if I hadn't known it was there ( thanks yelp). It has an intimate feel to it and has a really quirky, cosy outdoor area. I am completely addicted to the Tongue Thai'd Eggplant. I didn't know eggplant could be so brilliant. It is a crispy fried eggplant, that is crunchy on the outside and soft and melty on the inside. It is served in the most amazing and weird, sweet, sour and spicy sauce. I would pay a lot of money to have a constant supply of this delivered to my house. The restaurant itself is really nice. A bit out of the way but more than worth the drive. Inside it is cute, not too big but there is enough room. The service is brilliant. The staff are extremely nice and everything runs smoothly. The have a good wine list and a massive menu. There are so many options of dishes to have!! It is all very reasonably priced as well, almost all dishes are $20 and you get quite a large serve! read more

Yes, it's fairly good Thai cuisine that isn't too badly dumbed down for the local palate unlike many others I could mention. But it isn't amazing. Had my 20th bday function here last year and revisited here tonight, it's so good to be back. Food is amazeballs as always and my personal fav is the CHOO CHEE BARRAMUNDI and SOFT SHELL CRAB. I am normally not a massive fan of Thai curries but I found the red duck lychee special is surprisingly yummy. Services are genuine and detail oriented. I've been to heaps Thai restaurants in Adelaide and Tongue Thai'd is definitely top notch and stands out so much with its fabulous food, quirky interior and heartwarming services. Decided to pop into this place after my housemate and I thought it was a very clever name, and boy oh boy did it live up to expectation. Really nice comfortable vibe in this shop, quite a nice and relaxing atmosphere with beautiful music and aromas. The staff were super friendly and polite. The food was amazing, I had the cashew chicken and it was a delight! Great flavours, great texture and an all around good dish. I would absolutely recommend it and get some spring rolls for a starter. The only thing to rob this place of its 5th star was its timing, probably took just a little bit longer than I would have liked despite only having 3-4 tables to serve but I'll for sure be back soon! read more

Parking was available in a close side street. The decor is red, very red. The food is amazing. I went in a group of five we were quickly seated and offered drinks. Drinks came out promptly. I had the mussman chicken. It was amazing, been thinking of it ever since. Other people had entrees which looked and smelt delicious. All the mains were nice, no one had any complaints. We like to hang back and talk after our meal, we weren't pushed out, simply offered more drinks. Will definitely be returning here read more

I've both eaten in and had take out from tongue thai'd and overall, its been a very mixed experience. When dining in, we were warmly greeted, but clumsily led around the back to a room with 3 tables, none of which were yet occupied. We were then audience to a recital of the specials menu. Apparently because the specials board was around the corner we were presented with this fake, simply try hard presentation. It felt extremely awkward. I would have preferred just to peak around the corner. 15 minutes later, we had not even been offered to order drinks, until we caught the attention of a waiter. They then proceeded to serve our 3 beers without glasses to pour them into. Now, if this was at a mates place for a bbq, no worries, but when you're paying for service, I at least expect glasses with beer. So out comes a 15 year old looking, under dressed male waiter with 2 glasses (for 3 beers), gingerly places them on the table and shyly states that's all they have.... Right... A restaurant with no glasses to drink out of. Do they expect you to pass around a bottle of wine and each take sips from it? At least the 2 glasses they did bring were chilled! The wait for entrees was average. Same for the mains. Well, one of them. 1 meat dish came out before the rest and was placed right under the nose of the only vegetarian at the table,. A sharp "Ummm that's not my order" surprised the waitress who had't confirmed whose dish it was. She quickly retracted. Turns out it wasn't any of ours... The mains came out scattered over the next 5 minutes. From different waiters... Very gingerly and informal indeed. I wonder if these guys have even been shown how to properly carry and serve a plate of food, because it certainly didn't look like it. This place has so much potential. The food is generally quite good - sometimes great - but its staff really do let it down. I'll have to try them again one day. As much as I really do hope it was just a one off experience, the general vibe of the place seems pretty hit or miss and screams inconsistency (and in the case of the waiters, incompetence). read more

I'm not a harsh reviewer but I have to be completely honest for potential fellow diners. It will be long but honest! Our experience tonight was not good. To give the staff their due I believe they needed more hands on deck. After waiting for quite some time, with nobody taking a drink order, we gave our order for drinks and food. Again a long wait and then two of the three drinks arrived and no water as requested. After another ten minute wait I ventured out to the desk area to enquire about the remaining drinks and water. The flustered waitress assured me it would be attended to. After another extended wait a waiter arrived and somewhat aggressively asked if we had a problem. Turns out the waitress had only recorded an order of two drinks. This was rectified and our entrees arrived. Very over cooked dried out chicken satays and rubbery fish cakes. After we had eaten the fish cakes the required sauce finally arrived. :( Then they brought the first of two main dishes we had ordered....no plates, no rice. After it had sat for ten minutes we requested that it be taken away.....we would like all dishes, and plates on which to eat, to arrive together. Finally this happened and......the dishes were.....less than ordinary and quite salty. Perhaps this was just a very bad, out of the ordinary night for Tongue Thai'd....but I won't go back and won't recommend it. read more

In keeping with the great tradition of all self respecting Thai Restaurants the name of this place is sufficiently pun-tastic. Located at the beginning of Henley Beach Road, not far from the city, the location is far from glamorous but this restaurant with it's entirely red interior / exterior makes its own mark. Always heaving... this is a 'make sure you book' number and a favourite of Adelaideans from all over, I have friends that will drive 45 mins from their house to eat here. The food is fresh, oh so tasty and a little adventurous. Everyone has to try the eggplant thing that is on of their specialties - it's to die for. Sometimes you may have to wait a little while for your food but they tend generally to be on top of their game. Just watch out - they're closed on sunday and monday which has often been cause for lament in my household... especially on a sunday evening! read more
