I'm deducting stars for some shadier billing practices. Examples: reception - I repeat RECEPTION - will have you pee in a cup before seeing your doctor, and without explanation. Apparently it is procedure to test ALL women for pregnancies, which sets the tone of how must they trust your knowledge about your own body, and how they will listen to you. To top it off, you will get billed for it. And in that vein of billing, they will bill you for time waiting to see your doctor, not just time with your doctor. I was moved from the first waiting room, to a second waiting room, where I was left sitting for over 30 minutes. That time was included in my final bill as time with my physician, which is no small fee. So prepare your wallet accordingly!

She helped me prepare. Her info packet was practical and asked concrete questions about pain, coping skills and post-partum issues. I felt comfortable taking her homeopathic recommendations and herbal infusions (yummy Nora tea!) Critically, she was always available for checking in. It was easy to talk with her and I sought her advice about an ongoing problem I experienced with a particular midwife. (Since she both volunteers and gives massages at ABC, she's well-known there and familiar with its routines/rhythms. This put me at ease because I was a new client.) Margaret's post-partum help with tricky nursing issues proved equally invaluable. Margaret's a skilled licensed massage therapist who specializes in Arvigo Maya abdominal work. I was bigger this time around so the last trimester was tough. Having weekly massages in my last month was such a treat. Her massages were restorative, relieved me of the constant pain and worked to center me. The birth of my 2nd son was highly unusual but through the expert knowledge and skills of Margaret and the rest of my birth team, I experienced a safe and empowered natural birth. My son was born at 10 lbs and face first, quite a rare and challenging presentation. His labor was long and slow (3 days). Once we learned his presentation, we required a transfer to the hospital. We all worked together as a team to make his birth go smoothly and safely. Throughout all of this Margaret remained calm, focused on my well-being, supportive of my decisions, patient, positive and helpful. I couldn't have had the beautiful birth that I did without the team that I had. Having Margaret as part of my birth team made for an overall positive pregnancy, birth and post-partum experience. Dr. Hawkins is wonderful. About a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with a large fibroid…read more(squishing my bladder and causing other issues) and the recommendation was to get a hysterectomy. I talked to four different surgeons and, as expected, had a range of responses (everything from minimally invasive robotic surgery that Dr. Hawkins was able to perform, to a full vertical cut that would likely take 8+ weeks to recover from.) Dr. Hawkins was able to do the minimally invasive surgery (and I'm recovering really well!) Beyond that, she was so incredibly kind, reassuring, and helpful. I had some specific fears around a procedure that was required for insurance that she helped me through. She also gave really good, solid information and was quick to reply to questions on the portal. Surgery was better than I expected, despite the fact that she found a few extra issues (and took the time to deal with them for me during surgery - e.g., endometriosis). My primary doctor went through the surgery report with me and pointed out the things she did that, to him, indicated the quality of the surgery/surgeon. I also found her staff to be really helpful in getting through all of the steps that led up to the surgery. They've documented everything and send you the PDF beforehand. It's a little overwhelming/confusing, but they also send a few reminders leading up to the surgery to make sure you're on track. I was a little overwhelmed leading up to the surgery, but glad for the extensive written directions about what to expect and referred back to the document a LOT (I still have it open on my computer, to check out the post-op directions from time to time). In the end, I'm really glad that I took the time to talk with several doctors and glad that I found Dr. Hawkins. I very much appreciated her kindness, ability to help me through a difficult/stressful procedure, quick responses, and her surgical skill. Highly recommend talking to her if you're in a similar position!

Karyn faithful showed up through my third trimester and beyond to offer great doula support. What was meant to be a stressful and overwhelming pregnancy became empowering and manageable. She held my hand when I needed, informed when I wasn't clear and advocated when I needed. My hospital birth experience with Karyn was great.We labored at home and went in right in time for baby to be delivered. I did the whole birth naturally. Which was part of my birth plan.She was warm and friendly to the staff and firm when she needed to be. My girl is now 7 months and I couldn't be any more proud of my doula. I recommend her to any African moms, single moms, high risk pregnancy or moms who seek specialist outside of prenatal appointments. All my kids love her! She is reliable and well informed on the birthing process.
