Super cute local little coffee shop. We are staying up the road and started our morning with a walk to get coffee. I had the crème brûlée latte and it was perfect. Friendly staff. I'm read more

Retrograde Coffee anchors a small mixed use plaza that sits directly on Dickerson Pike near the Douglas Avenue intersection. The space is simple, but inviting, bright, well-laid out and nicely decorated...and is definitely local to the area of Nashville it is in! The inside is made up of lots of seating from the front door to the back wall and if inside isn't your thing, they have plenty of seating outside under cover as well! Retrograde is a coffee house first, but they also offer a good variety of sandwiches, baked goods, bagels and even beer and wine! With the coffee, you have all your standard hot and iced varieties, but Retrograde does a really good seasonal menu, so make sure to check that out when visiting, no matter the time of year! Parking is a bit stressful here depending on time/day you visit. The lot is small and is shared, so on occasion you have to get creative or head into the surrounding neighborhood to find a spot. Service was friendly and efficient. Cashier to the barista, no issues. My latest visit was on a random off day and I felt like hanging out at a coffee shop for a bit, and it happened to be fall, so I sampled their fall creation, the Pecan-Icano. The drink was good, but I couldn't tell too much of a difference from a standard latte with the exception of the cold foam, which was absolutely delightful! The drink was still good, don't get me wrong, but not as pronounced in flavor as I expected. Overall, really enjoy having Retrograde in the neighborhood and will certainly continue stopping by! read more

Simple coffee shop that is roomy and perfect for remote working. Coffee choices are plentiful, along with really good options for food. Breakfast sandwich was good, but was disappointed with the lack of bacon. This coffee shop is on the pricier side of things, so I was expecting a little more from them. Bagel sandwich- bagel was nice and chewy, but lacked enough bacon. Curry chicken sandwich- loved the flavor but the bread could've been more unique. read more

Big burrito was great! You can get bacon or sausage - we did sausage. They cut it in half for us to split and it also came with a cup of salsa with just the right amount of kick. Mostly all breakfast sandwich options for food with a few baked goods in a small case. The girl at the counter was nice enough, but not super personable. Nice interior with plenty of indoor seating and an outdoor patio. Bathrooms were big and clean. Parking lot is very tight, not the easiest to get into. Overall good experience and loved our breakfast! read more

A simple black coffee and croissant isn't really simple at all. Retrograde coffee paired with a buttery flaky croissant took back me to walking the streets of Paris but as I looked around I was surrounded with colorful tables and friendly neighborhood vibes. Lost & Found is such a cute spot to grab coffee & wholesomeness. The barista was lovely and deserved the 20% tip added on (ha). Will be back!! read more

Unassuming location, excellent service and coffee! Four of us ladies stopped in on a Saturday morning. Service was friendly and helpful. Our coffees were ready quickly and each was excellent - Americano, Lattes and an espresso. Bakery selection was an unexpected treat. The salted bagel was unique and toasted perfectly. Cream cheese was very generously applied, but also available on the side. Others dining there had ordered ahead, and some also came and went quickly with to go orders. It plenty of options and a wide variety of seating too n read more

Love this coffee shop! First time here and it has that classic coffee shop vibe with great music, but elevated. The dirty chai was creamy and sweet with the perfect touch of spice. The service was very welcoming. read more

TL; DR: solid coffee, lots of tables and chairs They have great and quick service. Their drinks are also delicious. They have a good amount of seating if you want to stay and chat with others inside. read more

The ambiance is light and airy, plenty of space and natural lighting. I got the honey lavender latte and whipped feta and prosciutto toast with a fried egg, that was good but just a tad bit too much prosciutto for my liking. I wanted to stay and enjoy the vibe, however the whole space was vey smoky and foggy, I think they were doing something with the espresso machine. But my eyes started to burn so I had to leave. read more

It makes me happy to know that I have a coffee shop like Retrograde in my neighborhood. This is a great little spot - decent coffee, free parking, plenty of seats, and it's never too busy. I've been here a handful of times, and always appreciate chatting with the friendly cashiers and baristas. My go-to order an iced coffee, and occasionally one of their breakfast options. The Avocado Toast is served on a baguette and very tasty - and my husband likes their Bacon, Egg, and Cheese sandwich. I have also tried and enjoyed their Shagbark Latte, which is what they're known for. If you like maple syrup, it's definitely worth ordering (I recommend it hot!) Insider tip - if you love Dozen Bakery in WeHo but don't want to wait in a long line for their pasties, Retrograde actually carries several of them, and they're delivered fresh every day. They also carry Hi-Fi Cookies! read more

Retrograde just opened their new Germantown location and it's already a favorite. The space is perfect for coworking--tons of room to spread out and actually get stuff done. I tried the lavender honey latte and it was delicious, not overly sweet and super smooth. One thing I really appreciated: it wasn't too loud, even during the week. Quiet enough to focus, but still had a good vibe. I'll definitely be back! read more

My lavender latte was great. My partner got a vanilla latte and you couldn't even taste the vanilla. We also got bagel sandwiches. They were okay for the price, our drinks came out about 5+ minutes after our drinks and they were not bust at all. The sandwiches are microwaved. Retrograde has a lot of potential and is a cool spot to check out. I will note, have visited here a handful of times and it's been a wildcard every time but nooot in a good way? Quality of coffee is super super hit or miss. The space is really cozy, do love that. Service is rough. From pretentious comments around food, coffee culture, or maybe just not knowing how to do parts of the job? (Not in a mean way, like when it comes to coffee and shot pouring and prepping to go orders). Wouldn't recommend but hope they grow! read more

We visited Nashville for a family trip. These can be wild as wrangling so many people together is a job itself. Then, we found Retrograde! Suddenly getting up that week was a treat since we stopped by here and started our day with their amazing brew. The staff is friendly and helped us find our favorite drinks. The atmosphere is very chill and perfect for studying or visiting with friends. I highly recommend the Shagbark Latte. Perfectly sweet but not too sweet, this iced coffee is one of my favorites of all time. Be sure to get a bagel with cream cheese, or better yet, egg and cheese. Satisfying, fresh and filling- you will not regret this one! Thank you Retrograde East Nashville, we appreciate your hospitality! read more

Great atmosphere, love the design and music (every time I'm in there the music is a vibe. Yes, different people are probably in charge of it on different days, I don't know how to explain it--likely magic). Great bagels, love the Selena sandwich. They have gf bread. A couple tall bars for solo folks to sit and work, as well as two and four tops. Parking in front and around back. Highly recommend! read more

Pour over was spot on. Great coffee spot. Friendly baristas that enjoy what they do and talking coffee.

Got the BEC breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel and an iced coffee. Both were good, especially the bagel. Definitely one the softest and freshest bagels I've had. While the sandwich is good, there could be room for improvement. The sandwich didn't have any mayo or aoli and at times tasted a bit dry. Using fresh bacon would likely mitigate this issue if you didn't want to offer a condiment; however, the bacon used was pre-cooked microwaveable bacon. If they fixed these two things, it would be exponentially better. read more

Delicious bagel but definitely pretty expensive for the size! Parking in the back was free but there are limited spots.

Retrograde is a conveniently located coffee shop in East. It boasts a brilliant view of downtown off the outdoor patio, and the smell of beans lures you inside. Charmingly decorated with great pops of color and plants, the eye is drawn to the gorgeous espresso machine on the coffee bar. With the amount of thought put into the design and functionality of the space, I wish more had been extended to the variety of the menu. However, when pressed for a choice you may select the drip coffee or their riff on an old fashioned. Both would be safe selections, but the mouth may drop at the cost to quantity ratio. Need a quick bite? Skip the choices here; all will take much too long to prepare if you are on the go. If you have 10 minutes to spare, opt for a warm breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel. Enjoy. read more

2.5 Loved the location, outdoor seating and the minimalism ambiance they had. With a cute mural on their outer wall it is easy to spot when driving down the main street. They have little parking in the front but have more in the back. I ordered a mocha which was very bitter, they used real cocoa, which I love but yikes bitter coffee with really bitter choclate is not a good mix. read more

Retrograde Coffee is one of my new Nashville coffee favorites. Not only do they have fantastic coffee, but they also make various coffee syrups from scratch. I'm not trying to drag down the star average. Great coffee! Great atmosphere! Lovely staff! I love this place. This is just my plea for you guys to do something about the sandwich situation. I felt really lucky to have Retrograde as my local coffee shop when I lived a couple blocks away, and it's a treat to stop in when I'm back in the neighborhood. There is quite a bit of indoor seating as well as seating on the patio outside, and (at least pre-pandemic) the vibe was energetic-but-quiet, making it a good place to get some reading or work done. I've liked the various drip coffee and espresso-based drinks I've had, and service is always friendly without being overbearing. The few pastries and bagels I've tried have also been tasty. read more

Retrograde has been a staple of mine for like 6 years now. Pretty consistent espresso drinks, usually staff is very friendly. Today there was a guy who I've never seen before, slender build with curly black decently long hair. Was not very friendly but could have been having a bad day. Not a big deal just thought ownership would like to know. Anyway if you somehow haven't been here yet come check it out:) will continue to support these guys for years to come! read more

Retrograde is a cute, convenient, little coffee spot. The inside, like their menu, is fairly Spartan and straight-forward. There is some seating indoors as well as a small outdoor patio, but its clear that this isn't intended as a hangout or a spot to write your novel. The coffee was good, service was pleasant, and the experience was nice. read more
