The pain was excruciating, resulting in me having to go to the emergency room because the pain was so bad that it was adversely impacting my blood pressure. Due to multiple trips to the emergency room I was admitted. The attending physician in her discharge notes referred me as normal to an orthopedic specialist, but she also mentioned that there was a neurosurgeon in the Piedmont Physician's Group that she would like for me to obtain a consult. Of course the Ortho doctor initially ordered PT which did not help me and after 2 months of that, I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Gates, for the first time, a doctor actually listened to me. He ordered a nerve study and other test and more x-rays and when I returned for our consultation, he took time, we reviewed the results and he provided a diagnosis and plan of action. Diagnosis, sciatica and my L4 & L5 disc had slipped and was pinching my nerves. At this time I am on a walker. I had gone in less than 6 months from high impact aerobics to living, breathing and with every movement of my body being in horrible pain & only able to be slightly mobile on a walker with no relief regardless as to the strength of the pain medication. So very thankful for the ER's referral to Dr. Gates! He was caring, listened to my concerns and fears and provided me with a comprehensive plan of action that included a foraminotomy procedure that restored my quality of life and removed constant, tingling in my (R) leg and hip and living without constant pain and discomfort. Thank you Dr. Gates for your professional, caring approach to patient care. In my months of care with this physician, he only presented himself as a physician that was 100% dedicated to improving my health! 2 years later and I am still happy and pain free! Because for one, their motto is Move well, Move often, Be Well... which I believe is the key to a successful third stage of life. Secondly, according to their website, the therapist gives you their complete attention throughout each appointment. While they may have student observers, they do not use students to conduct PT. I found all these things to be true - it's not just a line on a website. Each and every time, I was greeted warmly by the front desk staff. The facilities were always immaculate and I noticed that as soon as someone used a room, a massage table or a piece of equipment, someone came along behind them to wipe everything down. The therapists are top-notch, experienced, and many with doctoral degrees in PT. I initially began working with Jim Lewis, but when the timing of my schedule became more complicated, I transitioned to David Smelser. Each of the therapists was very good, and they collaborated with each other about my treatment. The treatments focused on exercised that would help my neck, and much of the time of each visit was focused on making sure I was doing each exercise properly. The exercises are such that they can be done at home, and the therapists encouraged me to do so. They always answered my questions clearly and completely. It took about 6 weeks for me to feel back to normal and able to resume my previous activities, but I feel great. I realize that these exercises are key to my good health, so I continue to do them daily (it only takes 10 or 15 minutes). I am now walking and functioning better than ever thanks to their expertise, tenacity, professionalism and skill. And while their skillset in conventional, socket mounted prosthetics is clearly unsurpassed, they are the only facility in the south that I know of who are experts in the field of osseointegration (OI), which I underwent in 2021. This nascent procedure is performed only by a handful of surgeons in the world and managed by even fewer prosthetists. The mounting hardware is unique as well as the attach point coming out of my femur, but leave it to GP to become totally familiar with all aspects of this architecture. They have provided me with attachments that have greatly improved my quality of life and recently repaired the attachment mechanism that comes out of my bone after a fall. The precision of his work is truly remarkable. My post-operative X-rays clearly demonstrate the meticulous care and technical excellence he brings to his craft--an image truly worth a thousand words. I genuinely believe this type of surgery is both a science and an art, and Dr. Refai is a master of both. Because I am a small person, he thoughtfully designed and fitted a cage specifically for my smaller anatomy.
