We have brought our pets to this place for 18 years. Since covid this place has gone downhill, all of the good veterinarians left and the people at the front desk are lacking. You are no longer allowed to go inside and observe or chat with the veterinarians you have to wait in your car. We recently called to ask what we should do for our cat that caught a cold and the lady on the phone asked if we wanted to come in and put him down. That's absolutely ridiculous, they are not good at what they do. We will no longer be coming here and I do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I've been going to Reston Animal Hospital for a number of years and have been happy with their services up until recently. The vet techs, receptionists, and most of the vets are great, but once you have an issue that needs to be addressed, they do not treat you like a valued customer. The details of the story are probably not worth getting into, but the gist is that I raised concerns at my dog's fourth appointment where Dr. Garcia recommended an OTC allergy medication after my dog had been on three rounds of antibiotics. I didn't understand why I was paying for a $100 vet appointment for that sort of recommendation. He talked in circles until finally insulting me by telling me that I should have brought my dog in myself (They only take appointments in the mornings and I couldn't be there in person because of a critical meeting so I was on the phone). I waited 20 mins for the manager to come out and talk after the appointment but he/she never showed. I called back at least 5-6 times to talk to the manager or owner and to get a resolution for my dog's issue. I never got a call back. I don't ever write reviews but I am really disappointed for how the clinic handled (or more accurately didn't handle) this situation. For how much money pet owners spend at veterinary clinics, I would expect more consideration and respect for their customers. I wouldn't recommend going there at all, but if you choose to go, don't see Dr. Garcia. read more

I've never had a bad experience here at Reston Animal Hospital. All of the vets and technicians I have seen have been very knowledgeable and straight forward. I got my dachshund from a rescue situation so he was a little hard to handle - wanting to bite, freaking out, peeing everywhere. The doctors assured me everything was okay and stayed calm during our whole visit. I had attempted to cut my dogs nails on my own and he wasn't have it. Screamed and alligator rolled. I took him to RAH and they were done in 5 minutes!! So awesome. Love this hostpital and your pet will too! read more

I had scheduled an appointment for my dog to get dental work and paid $250 for it upon scheduling as a deposit. I cancelled the appointment a few days ahead of time. When I asked if I could have the $250 refunded, they refused because it was non-refundable but said it could be applied to the dental if I wanted to reschedule. The dental was $2500 and I found a low cost clinic that would do it for $475 (Kincheloe South, if you're interested) so I was not going to reschedule. I asked if I could apply it to future appointments but they said it was only good to be applied to another dental. They said it's their policy because there is a waitlist for making those appointments. However, there was no waitlist when I made the appointment and I gave them plenty of notice for them to get it filled. If there really was such a big waitlist, it should have been easy for them to fill the spot. Between my partner and I, we had four pets we wanted to take to this vet because before this happened, we had very good experiences there. I had two cats that I wanted to bring in right away and could have easily spent the $250 or more in just one more appointment if they had just let me apply that to my account. I understand that's their policy but it doesn't make it ethical. I couldn't justify spending any more money there after being out $250 for nothing. I recently took one of my cats to Just Cats Clinic in Reston instead where they were very nice. And I spent a lot more $250! My partner didn't want to take his cat there anymore after that either since they were disrespectful, rude, and unsympathetic toward us. They refused to let us speak to a manager when we wanted to discuss it further. They kept saying they'd call back but then never did. So because they were insistent on holding onto the $250 for no services provided, they're missing out on thousands of dollars between all of our pets. Again, I get it's their policy and they'll hide behind that all they want, but some policies aren't very good. read more

Mr. William, my Airedale Terrier, and I LOVE Reston Animal Hospital. We particularly love Dr. Miller and Dr. Garcia. We were recently in a really bad car accident (hit by a drunk driver) and Dr. Garcia did an awesome post-accident checkup on Mr. William. William can be a particularly difficult patient, yet we were still very well cared for. All of the staff and vets are amazing. Jay is the usual groomer for Mr. William and is always so patient with him, and always does a great job. Between Airedales being a generally hard "look" to get right in terms of grooming, and as Mr. William is very difficult to deal with to begin with (usual Airedale personality, plus some anxiety as he's a rescue), Jay does a particularly excellent job. William came home from his "spa day" today particularly happy and well cared for, and looking excellent. Thanks for taking such good care of us! Thank you!!! read more

Woo-hoo! A happy cat means a happy house! I've been coming here since December of 2006 when I adopted Hunter the Cat. I'm very happy with the professional staff and they way they treat him. It's really a place that's full of people who are cheery, professional, and treat your pet as a family member. This morning I needed an emergency appointment for my boy. Andrew, pleasant as always, took all the information and said he'd call me back as soon as he could work something out. An hour later he called and said Dr. Cracas would see Hunter if I left my house right then and there. I said I was on my way. Dr. Cracas is AWESOME. She has seen Hunter before, so at least I am familiar with her. She is great because she cares about my boy, she is wonderful about explaining things and offering options for treatment. Every time I've been there, the whole staff has been really cool. It also helps that when the techs see Hunter they say what a handsome cat he is. *smile* Take your furry family member there. I started taking my two dogs here out of convenience (live around the corner) after taking them to either Vienna Animal Hospital or Ashburn Farm Animal Hospital. Big mistake. Good points... Jay the groomer is great. He does a great job with the grooming. He's friendly. The dogs seem to love him. The dogs are ready when he says they will be ready. Bad points... The vets there seem to worry more about making money than doing what's right for the dog and the owner. They're like a shady mechanic - the kind that wants to throw parts at a car so the shop can make more money and he can charge more labor rather than making the correct diagnosis and just fixing what's wrong. Several times I've come in there, they've pushed doing something that seem more than necessary (aka up-sell). And after they did it, they confirmed that it didn't make sense. For example... One of my dogs swallowed part of a corn cob and two days later, he wouldn't stop puking. After putting 2 and 2 together, I figured it was the cob stuck in his stomach and the bile was upsetting his stomach which caused him to puke. I took him in for a check up just to make sure. They said he needed an x-ray ($160) to see whether the corn was in his stomach. That didn't make sense to me because I know that corn is much less dense than bone and would probably not show up on an x-ray. Well...IMMEDIATELY after the x-ray results came back, the doctor came into the room and said, "We didn't see anything in his stomach, but corn wouldn't show up anyway." Really?! Another reason why I'm not a fan is that their office staff always seems like they would rather be doing anything else besides being at work and helping customers. They're monotone at best when speaking to you and are all about getting you in and out like an assembly line. No more Reston Animal Hospital for me (sorry Jay). Taking my dogs to an animal hospital that actually cares about pets and their owners. read more

My family has taken there pets here for a very long time, I am sorry to read about a few bad apples and I hope these reviews are catching some peoples attention. It is a small mom and pop operation that has been a staple of Reston since the early 80's. I don't have much patience for rude people and currently do not have any pets, but being that they have cared for my pets (even saved my family dog from heart worm back in the day) I will give them the chance to care for my pet when that time comes along again. I will note that from 2005-2008 I had several experiences with them bringing my dog at the time here and had no problems at all, as well as many visits for our family pets in the early 80's. read more

I recently heard about Reston Animal Hospital after moving to the area and needing a new vet hospital for my 2 year old Husky, Khaleesi. I was very pleased to find this gem in the heart of Reston conveniently located off the Parkway making it easy to find and easy to get to. The staff was well informed and friendly and were able to answer all of my questions. I felt comfortable leaving my animal with the Vet Techs and doctors. I called on a Tuesday and they took my cat in for shots and grooming the NEXT DAY! I very much appreciated that. They allow for early drop off 7:30-8:30 and simply call me when the grooming and vet visit are done, with pick up anytime before closing. Very professional and thorough. I called to have them see my cat who I was pretty sure was dying, and they said they couldn't see him for another week. I've been bringing him here for years. Needless to say, I called another vet who wanted to see him immediately confirming he was in pain and didn't have very much longer to live. I will never bring another animal here. He wouldn't have lasted a week and would have just suffered in pain, meanwhile he got good care, pain management, and a plan with another local vet in Herndon. Really disappointed. read more

If I could give a zero star I would. I had an appointment for my two kittens which I thought they had an exam because I was charged for it but come to find out a few weeks later they charged me for the exams and never actually did them even though they took my kittens inside the building. I was not allowed to go in with them. I was told at this first appointment that the kittens could not receive their rabies shots because it was within two weeks of them having received a distemper shot(which I also found out later is inaccurate) therefore I made a second appointment for the rabies shots a few weeks later. When I showed up for that appointment they didn't even have me on the schedule. It was at this point I asked for my records so I could go to a different vet and found out they had never even did an exam at the first appointment. It then took many phone calls and a few weeks to receive a refund for services they charged me for that they never performed. I would never recommend this place. They are scamming you and charging for services not performed. The fact that you can't go in with your animal should have been my first indication that something was off about this place. read more

I have been coming to Reston Animal Hospital since 2005. They have always treated me like family and taken great care of all of my animals. Today I had care above and beyond the call of duty. My sweet dog developed an odd eye reaction that I discovered only an hour before they stopped appointments (and it's a busy Saturday!). They went out of their way to squeeze us in. I have been bringing my two pets to Reston Animal Hospital for over two years now. During that time we have been seen for everything from routine exams and shots, to emergency treatments, as well as long term treatment of my Labrador Retriever's seizure problems. I never thought it was necessary to write a review until I read the previous review by Anya S. which appalled me. The doctors at Reston Animal Hospital are top notch. When I brought my lab in for her annual check up, the technician immediately noticed a strange bump on her lower gum. After performing a biopsy during her dental cleaning the following week, we found out that this was a deep rooted tumor growing beneath her jaw. Within days they arranged for us to have it removed with a dental specialist. Thankfully, the tumor turned out benign. Explanations are very important in the care of pets. The doctors and staff at Reston take extra time in making sure that I understand what is going on during appointments and what I need to do to continue the best care possible at home. When my lab's seizure medications started to become less effective, Dr. Cracas took the time to research additional causes of seizures and evaluated everything. Through her searching, we are now using a combination of medications, and my lab is no longer having the seizures that our previous vet told us we would just have to get used to. Both my dogs love coming to Reston. I have taken them to many other hospitals where they become scared and hate being there. The staff knows them by name and treats them as if they were their own companions. The receptionists have always been friendly, prompt, and extremely knowledgeable. The vet assistants handle the animal expertly and are wonderful at explaining things. I have had to wait for an appointment before; however, my pets have always received very thorough exams, and I know that the doctors have taken longer than allotted for while taking care of my pets. We came to know Reston Animal Hospital through very sad circumstances. Yesterday we made the tough decision to have our cat euthanized. Because we could not schedule an appointment with our current vet, we called Reston Animal Hospital hoping they could see us sooner. From the moment we talked to them, they showed nothing but compassion for our situation. As soon as we came in, they ushered us into a private room to spend our last moments with our cat. I appreciated that they allowed us to do the paperwork ahead of time to get that out of the way. In the end, I felt that I we made the right decision to come here. Disappointing.... We had taken our older dog there for several routine procedures. Sadly the time came for us to plan end of life care, so we called to find out about the options and services that they may provide. Of course we wanted the best care possible for his last day. The staff that answered the phone kept interrupting and on several occasions, stopped listening to us to chat with other staff. Which of course led to the inevitable : "I'm sorry where were we?" "What's wrong? Do you need to make an appointment ? " " Sorry we are all booked up, how about next month?" Trying to hold back emotions we ask to speak with a doctor but was told no one was available. We left a message but after several days, no return phone call. It's disappointing that when we need loving care the most we are not even worth a return phone call. read more

This hospital is convenient for my current location. My dog has been seen here for the past year and a half. I have never had any problems with the staff. My dog has also been boarded with RAH and I've been happy with their services. Dr. Miller is my favorite, he is very warm, caring, and will give you good HONEST opinions. He has saved me quite a bit of money being up to date on his medical knowledge. I feel that other vets will try to push everything possible on you to gain more money from you. At RAH, I felt that Dr. Miller had my dog's best interest in mind, but spared me the unnecessary procedures and the fees that come along with them. I would continue to use RAH if I can get appointments with Dr. Miller. read more

I agree that Dr. Miller is great. He is very straight forward, almost brusque, but the honesty is appreciated. But like others said, you hardly see Dr. Miller. In fact, I've seen him twice, but otherwise never seen the same vet more than once. It's a convenient location but the staff are not very nice as other people have noted. The two exam rooms are tiny and the waiting area is extremely cramped, which is difficult for already stressed animals, but also allows sick animals to spread their germs. Once a puppy was sent back to the waiting area by a vet while he got some medicine together. This puppy was coughing and drooling saliva all over the place. After they brought their dog over to mine (who is not overly fond of puppies) the owners tell me their dog had just been diagnosed with (highly contagious) kennel cough! Even though he got a vaccine for it that day, guess whose dog also came home with kennel cough? And I'm sure my dog wasn't the only one to contract it because no one was cleaning the floor or asking these people to contain their puppy. The owners were letting him greet every dog that came in! Each time I went in I think I was charged more for my visit. And when I didn't see Dr. Miller I always felt like they were trying to sell me more than I needed. The final straw was when I took my dog in to get antibiotics for an infected spot where he had stepped on a thorn. I've had this problem a number of times with my blackberry loving dog. Sometimes when I remove a thorn he won't stop licking the spot, it gets infected, a hard pussy spot forms, and he needs antibiotics. This time I was in a bit of a rush because I was in pre-labor with my daughter. I saw yet another new vet who didn't believe me. She wanted to put my dog under general anesthesia, cut out the bump, and have it biopsied. What?! No thanks! Well, I insisted it was an infection and refused to schedule a surgery . In no condition to argue I sent my husband back on the first day after the birth and told him don't accept no for an answer! A different vet agreed to do blood work first. The blood work showed that, in addition to the infection in his paw, he had a re-occurrence of ehrlichiosis and therefore a horribly low platelet count. She said that he probably would have never woken from surgery. He got 10 days of antibiotics, the bump disappeared, and he felt better than ever. I was grateful for the ehrlichiosis diagnosis and I thought this vet was pretty reasonable. I would use her again, if I could! But you never know what you're going to get. I'm going to try somewhere else. read more

My dog is prone to yeast infections in his ear. Last year we took him to Reston Animal Hospital, where the vet listened to my case for the yeast infection, the vet examined the ears, did not take a sample for testing, just ruled out all other cases and agreed with me, it was a yeast infection. They prescribed medicine and after about two weeks the infection was gone. It's a year later around the same exact time and he has another yeast infection. I called Reston Animal hospital, stated who I was and how I brought my dog there last year, explained what was going on, hoping they would be understanding and compassionate. They said that he needed to have a sample taken from his ears before any medicine could be discussed. The woman who answered made me feel inadequate and dumb with her condescending response. We will take our dogs elsewhere. read more

Awful. * You can't leave a phone message. The recording actually says "this machine does not accept messages." * Most of the staff is very pleasant, but a few people on the business end of the practice are very... not. The office manager, Dawn, made me cry when I asked if she would please hold my $900.00 check for two days so I could make a deposit that would cover the full amount. To be fair, I did buy a large supply of medication that could have waited until the check would clear, but it couldn't hurt to ask, right? Wrong. Apparently it hurt a lot. It would have sufficed for her to politely say, "I'm sorry, we can't do that." Instead, she launched into an openly angry explanation of how I don't understand her job and that the deposits must all be made at once. She agreed to wait the two days by snapping, "Next time, don't even ask!" To her credit, she did call to apologize. She was probably just having a bad day, but so was I. I hadn't planned on mentioning Dawn by name, but I see that several other yelpers already have, and her employer obviously isn't getting the message about her. * After one doctor referred me to a veterinary oral surgeon, another said my dog's teeth are fine. I realize that differences of professional opinion do occur, but it was unsettling because that seemed like a pretty straightforward judgment call. * I took my dog to have her thyroid checked on Monday and was told that, for best results, the blood work should be drawn "4-6 hours after her last pill" (this would have been nice to know ahead of time). So we skipped her pill on Thursday morning and my boyfriend took her back for the thyroid test. Now they tell him that, by saying "4-6 hours after her last pill," they meant the exact 2-hour window of time. No fewer than 4 hours, and no more than 6 hours. So now she has to go back a third time for the same thyroid test. Guess what?? We're not going back. EVER. I too, will be following the other yelpers to the Clocktower Animal Hospital. * These are only the examples that come to mind at the moment. I've gone to the Reston Animal Hospital multiple times every year since 2005, and there is ALWAYS a problem. *UPDATE: I called on Thursday evening to request my dogs' records. They told me they'd be prepared and waiting for me at the front desk by the next day. My boyfriend went there on Saturday and they can't find our records anywhere. *UPDATE: The records showed up in the mail on Saturday. It's very nice that they mailed them, I just wish they hadn't also told me to pick them up. I just called the Clocktower Animal Hospital down the street, and they're already a breath of fresh air. I told them my dog needs a thyroid test - they scheduled me for noon tomorrow and were very clear that she needs to have her last pill between 6 and 8 am. Good riddance Reston Animal Hospital. I'm sorry I waited so long to leave and spent SO much money there. read more

I have had to take many unneeded trips there because of their incompetence with my dogs who HATE IT. I was able to get the same procedure done (tooth extracation with all medications) at Fairfax Animal Hospital for 1/3 the price. Also, they charge almost the same for a follow up visit as they do for an initial visit..there's no break. I've been taking my four pets here for over four years. Up until now it's been a pleasant experience. Today I was put on hold from someone (I believe her name was Monica), for 10 minutes then when I called back, apparently she had just left me on hold. This started me off in an unhappy mood. She was rude from the start telling me she couldn't talk because she was "busy", not the standard polite "please wait until I can get to you" or some sort of standard customer service. She was the worst customer service I've ever dealt with and I'm happy I'm leaving because I would never return my pets thanks to her. She even hung up on me when I got snappy back to her. What did she expect? I'm the customer and she was as pleasant as a rattle snake. The reason I had called was because we were told by the vet that all we had to do to drive through Canada to AK this summer with our pets was come pick up certificates before we go. I tried to explain this since my husband was en route for unnecessary (costly) appointments with all three pets (from D.C...Bolling AFB since we've moved out of our house). The pets have all had their annual shots and appointments which I also told her and she argued that they hadn't been seen in a while. When they got sick, we took them to Pender, perhaps that's why she didn't see Elms in the system lately, I don't know but she was awful. Then she ended the argument by hanging up on me. Lovely lady. If I move back to this area, Pender will be my animal hospital, I can't and won't tolerate this new "customer service". The vets were good so it's too bad you have to get through a nightmare to get to them!!! I haven't been this upset in a very long time. read more

The staff at Reston Animal Hospital are loving and caring people that serve their human AND pet clients with excellence. My dog, Cosby, first went to RAH around 5 years, as a still-rowdy Labrador Retriever. Though she was an energetic, rambunctious, noisy "pup" at 5 years, they always welcomed her with lavish attention and affection. She LOVED coming to RAH where she barked with joy and wiggled frantically. They helped Cosby and I through many tic removals, nail clippings, vaccinations and other routine visits. They were also there for us in emergencies such as keto-acidosis/diabetes diagnoses, raisin bran "overdose" and seizures. When other vets could not help me get Cosby's insulin dosage right, Dr. Tory was magnificent and detailed oriented. Thanks to excellent care from Dr. Miller, Dr. Tory and Dr. Arthur, Cosby thrived for 4 years after her diabetes diagnosis. They educated me on her care, respected my wish to perform curves myself, helped me master the Alpha II tracker. At 14 years old, they treated my senior "baby" with as much affection, interest and excellent care as when she was 5. When it was time to say goodbye to my precious friend of 10 years, they supported, encouraged and informed me and my dog every step of the way. On Cosby's last day of life on earth, she had much pain from back arthritis, and much weakness and stiffness from age. Yet she barked for joy and wiggled as much as she could muster when we pulled into the parking lot. They made a painful transition and goodbye more pleasant than I could have expected. I will always be grateful for the excellent care my dog and I received at RAH. To all the vet tech's and doctors, those who worked with Cosby and those who haven't: THANKS! I've been taking my pets to Reston Animal Hospital for...about 8 years now? And the staff has always been more than courteous to me. The front desk knows me and my pets by name, and Dawn Sherwood, the general manager, is always helping out wherever she can: I've seen her as a receptionist, a technician, and then I've had to talk to her as a manager. She's always been more than understanding and caring about my situation! I personally like to see Dr. Cracas, but with my zoo of a house I've had a chance to see all the doctors, and while they all have different methods, they're all good; it's just a matter of finding the one who works for you! Dr. Cracas has done one emergency surgery on my cat (saved his life!), multiple surgeries on another, and then this past spring when it was time to put my old dog to sleep she was there as well; actually, it was like the whole staff was. She gave me as long as I needed to say goodbye, held my hand the entire time, and even kissed my dog and told him what a good boy he was. Dawn and the other technologists and receptionists all shared their condolences and the whole thing made me feel much better. I've just had my first experience with RAH, and was very impressed by both the office and medical staffs. First, I wanted only a fecal test done on a new rescue kitten, as I had already planned to take her to our regular vet in Arlington in a couple of weeks (we live in Herndon). Then, when the test came back positive and I needed to bring her in for an exam/treatment, the experience was teriffic. Dr. Miller spent a lot of time getting our kitten's history, and even offered advice on introducing her to our established cat. The vet tech found a flea, and also discovered evidence of ear mites. Dr. Miller explained the various treatments and why he chose the ones he did. I've been taking my dog to The Reston Animal Hospital for about 3 years now. I've had really good experiences with the staff - even with my dog being very high energy.Any vet we've ever seen patiently & thoroughly answers questions. We use their kennel all the time & my dog Angus actually looks happy when we pull into their parking lot. Just recently he had shots & the next day was wagging his tail like crazy when we pulled into the parking lot. They do get busy at times - but I think it because they are a really good hospital. The staff tries hard to be as attentive & quick as they can be. One day I brought in a cat that had just been hit on the parkway, put it on the counter & had 3 staff members tending to it right away. My dog was a patient at Reston Animal Hospital for 11 years. Throughout that time he was a patient of Dr. Miller, eventually Dr. Cracas, and finally Dr. Mcfeely. These three veterinarians were wonderful in every sense of the word. I always felt that they genuinely cared for the welfare of my pet. Each one of them always took the time to properly explain treatments and options. They would always call my home to check on the status of my pet or to see if I had any further questions. I don't recall having any issues with their staff. They were never rude to me, nor did they seem incompetent in any way. I dealt with just about every single one of their technicians and they were all proficient in their tasks, and great people. Recently, when I had to put my dog to sleep, everyone and I mean EVERYONE at Reston Animal Hospital dealt with me and especially my pet with professionalism, kindness and compassion. The two cards I got in the mail a day later from Dr. Mcfeely and the hospital's technicians meant a lot to me. It expressed how much they appreciated and would miss my pet, also their kind words of encouragement provided a great sense of solace. If I do decide to become a pet owner again, sometime in the near future. I can say with complete confidence, that I will definitely return to Reston Animal Hospital.
