Very nice food. Hotel has a great view of the fjord. Service was fast but we were not rushed.

Oh man, Jamie W. and I still had a half-hour left before boarding our fjord cruise boat scheduled…read moreto get us back to Ålesund in (gasp) 3-1/2 hours. We just finished our lunch at Cafe Ole (review: https://bit.ly/3ckj0Zb), but we couldn't help but notice the tall soft serve cones that a lot of kids were getting. Our inner children were speaking to us and whispering in my ear..."Dude, you know you want one. Never mind that you're way too old and pudgy to deserve one, but hey, don't let that stop you." Gee, I hate that inner voice. But we saw this spot down the path from Cafe Ole and went for it, the 49 NOK ($5) Softis. They offered toppings which they turned into an exercise in dipping dexterity. The server botched his first attempt at adding rainbow sprinkles as the soft serve fell out of the cone as he turned it in the bowl, but his second try was a success (photo: https://bit.ly/3T9jRg0). Yep, it hit the spot. "Dude, you deserve it." That wasn't my inner voice, that was me in self-validation mode. SOFT SERVE - 4 stars...creamy indulgence AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...it was just a window but hey, Geiranger is gorgeous SERVICE - 4 stars...no penalty for the botched initial dipping TOTAL - 4 stars..."Dude, you deserve it." So, there aren't many places to eat dinner affordably in "downtown" Geiranger. The other two…read morerestaurants open for dinner cost an arm and a leg. So, my husband and I, after a day of hiking, settled on this little take-out window. We both ordered the 100 g cheeseburger combo, which includes fries and a soft drink. To our surprise, the burger was decent! It came on soft bread with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion slices, and thousand island burger dressing. The fries were crunchy as expected. We sat in the little outdoor area, people watching the other tourists looking for an affordable meal. Our meal cost about $14 per person with the current conversion rates. They also make pizzas, which many people were ordering to go. They looked pretty good. I'd rate the food three stars, but I am giving it an extra star simply because it was the only affordable restaurant actually open for dinner. Most people visit from the cruise ships and daytime bus tours, so once those people leave, most stores/eateries shut down, around 4-5pm. So kudos to them for actually staying open to feed the "poorer" tourists.

Just to give you a heads-up on your own packaged Norway adventure, Flåm and Geiranger are the two…read morevillages in which you'll spend an inordinate amount of time because they are the tourist hubs of the most picturesque fjords in Norway. Geiranger is the smaller of the two with only 250 residents, but it's Norway's third largest cruise ship port. It definitely felt like it when Jamie W. and I were there during a two-hour stop on our fjord cruise from Ålesund (review: https://bit.ly/3ckj0Zb). Beyond looking at the torrent that courses through town, we didn't much to do but eat. Options were pretty limited unless you want a hot dog. Like real bad. This cafe is on the main pedestrian walkway between the campground parking and the cruise ship terminal, and we weren't that hopeful of its quality based on its prime location. It was also drawing a lot of loudish tourists from various nations, and they weren't mindful of either the noise they were making or the excessive space they were taking. It was enough to test the limits of my butt-clenching abilities. However, we were pretty delighted by what we ordered and shared. First up was the 190 NOK ($19.30) Ham & Cheese Sandwich, generously portioned on a baguette with cucumber slices bringing fresh crunch (photo: https://bit.ly/3QHsgWn). Then there was the 280 NOK ($28.50) Dagens Suppe (Soup of the Day), a spicy and creamy carrot soup topped with toasted croutons and scallions (photo: https://bit.ly/3R363BP). Yes, it was like a school cafeteria lunch but a really well done one. We were pleased because we had a 3-1/2-hour boat ride back to Ålesund, and we didn't want no stinkin' hot dog. FOOD - 4 stars...surprisingly satisfying ham & cheese baguette sandwich and spicy carrot soup AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...well-kept to keep the tourists under control SERVICE - 4 stars...quite polite considering how rude some customers were TOTAL - 4 stars...if you're ever in Geiranger, this may be your best bet for a quick bite RELATED - Exploring Norway?
