Just to give you a heads-up on your own packaged Norway adventure, Flåm and Geiranger are the two villages in which you'll spend an inordinate amount of time because they are the tourist hubs of the most picturesque fjords in Norway. Geiranger is the smaller of the two with only 250 residents, but it's Norway's third largest cruise ship port. It definitely felt like it when Jamie W. and I were there during a two-hour stop on our fjord cruise from Ålesund (review: https://bit.ly/3ckj0Zb). Beyond looking at the torrent that courses through town, we didn't much to do but eat. Options were pretty limited unless you want a hot dog. Like real bad. This cafe is on the main pedestrian walkway between the campground parking and the cruise ship terminal, and we weren't that hopeful of its quality based on its prime location. It was also drawing a lot of loudish tourists from various nations, and they weren't mindful of either the noise they were making or the excessive space they were taking. It was enough to test the limits of my butt-clenching abilities. However, we were pretty delighted by what we ordered and shared. First up was the 190 NOK ($19.30) Ham & Cheese Sandwich, generously portioned on a baguette with cucumber slices bringing fresh crunch (photo: https://bit.ly/3QHsgWn). Then there was the 280 NOK ($28.50) Dagens Suppe (Soup of the Day), a spicy and creamy carrot soup topped with toasted croutons and scallions (photo: https://bit.ly/3R363BP). Yes, it was like a school cafeteria lunch but a really well done one. We were pleased because we had a 3-1/2-hour boat ride back to Ålesund, and we didn't want no stinkin' hot dog. Geirangerfjorden is by good reason still engulfed in nature. With that said options will be limited. Thankfully Cafe Ole can put out a solid iced latte. We stayed at the Grand Fjord Hotel & found ourselves full of breakfast good eats and craving some good coffee beans to provide a little jolt in the AM for hiking & exploring. My husband found himself coming back here day after day. Now that we've just arrived back in the US--He's finding himself in nostalgia dreamland wishing we were back in Norway. Definitely a great little spot. Downside, options for food. I'm vegetarian/borderline vegan and can't live off of sugary/bread pastries. Quiches, salads, something a little extra here would vastly increase their clientele. You get a sense from being in. Norway for so long that variety comes far and few between. & in Geirangerfjorden you will most likely wind up here if for coffee. read more

Stopped here because of the cruise to iceland on norweigan. . So I had a little time before the excursion I stopped here to have me a cup of coffee. . On the outside they have this special for the day, coffee and pancake for 59. Alone a cup of coffee is 29 so why not? The cup of coffee is a filter coffee is what they say. . So while I'm in line they have one person making the fresh pancakes, served with strawberry compote and sour cream. Sour cream with pancake sounded weird but hey it was a good combo taste. The pancake was just like a regular pancake but made fresh. The strawberry compote wasnt too sweet but had a great fresh berry flavor. . Coffee added some creme and sugar and they brewed a new batch of filter coffee which is regular black coffee and it was so good. The coffee was strong and had a nice flavor to it. . The vibe in this coffee shop reminds me of a mom and pop kind of place, smaller but has great food, beverage, and free wifi, as well lots of seating inside and outside, and well clean restrooms. This is a cute café in the main shopping area and offers a wide selection of quick bite to eat as well as drinks. Besides the chocolate shop there's really nothing else in town that's like it unless you want to count the bakery. I'd say this is the one main café for the village and it has little cute gift shop as well. read more

While Geiranger is a lovely spot, once you've seen a few waterfalls, and been driven up to Mount Dalsnibba for the panoramic view of Geirangerfjord, there isn't a whole lot to do. The "city center" of Geiranger is essentially one street with a hotel, a tourist information center, a couple restaurants, and a coffeeshop. Cafe Ole is that coffeeshop, and after you've seen your waterfalls, odds are decent that you'll end up here. Luckily enough, it's a pleasant spot, even if it gets its fair share of pushy tourists from all over Europe with no concept of "personal space." I was jostled around as I waited in line, and people attempted to cut in line on several occasions. So, getting our food was a bit uncomfortable. The best things about Cafe Ole, beyond providing a much-needed place to hang out in Geiranger, are the unique Norwegian baked goods on offer - things I've never seen in America, like Eplekake, and this fun pancake with brown cheese. Eplekake is a creamy apple cake, and it's tasty. The brown cheese, even though it will seem odd to most American palates, is a whey cheese in which the lactose is caramelized, so its taste is fairly sweet. I was hoping to find food items like this that I'd never heard of before, so this made me happy. I also found that I'm a pretty big fan of this brown cheese. The coffees and teas are decent - nothing special, but they do the job. Since this is a tourist-oriented town in every sense, the shops here are hardly bargains, so be prepared to break out your kronur if you want some Eplekake. read more
