Searching for a restaurant the day before, we were lucky that this place had one opening for us! Upon showing up, we were not too sure what to expect but ended up having a lovely dinner! The meal started with a palate cleanser: tuna with ginger. In the past, I have tried tuna and have not been a fan. Regardless, I tried it anyways and was very surprised. I found it to be quite tasty. If I wasn't told it was tuna, I wouldn't have guessed it at all. It did not have the typical tuna flavor to it, and the ginger was a nice flavor with it As an appetizer, we tried the wine soup. Delicious. For a meal we had the flambe and it was flavorful. Initially, we thought the plate was small for the price. However, it was pretty filling. Then we found out that there was another serving of it! We were not expecting that! Don't worry, we still managed to squeeze in a dessert - crepe suzette (order minimum is for 2 people). It was a flamby crepe with orange flavoring and a scoop of ice cream! The staff was very friendly and very attentive! Overall, the meal and the experience were very enjoyable

This dinner was an incredible start to our time in Zermatt. The Beef fillet Stroganoff Flambé was absolutely amazing. We left very full and happy! Enjoyed the service and ambiance as well.

We had dinner here while in town and although we did not do the flambé - we enjoyed the Duck plate and Steak plate. My steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and I enjoyed the 2 dipping sauces and herbed butter it came with. You get to pick your side and I went with the French fries, which were simple and perfect. The dining room is a combination of a hunting lodge and upscale mountain restaurant and the service was top notch.

Originally we had booked a couple of rooms for a night at this place back in 9/11/2021. A couple of…read moreweeks prior to that date, COVID was surging in Switzerland and we, being in a risk group, were advised not to travel to Switzerland. Hence we cancelled all transportation and hotels, including this place. We called the hotel to cancel and asked for our options. They offered us a credit, which we now wanted to take advantage of. It turns out that they could not find any record of the promised credit and are not willing to honor the credit. Is this the Swiss way of doing business? Fortunately not! All other businesses gladly made arrangements and, considering the difficult circumstances, honored their offers. But not this place. Watch out for dishonest business practices at this place. Given an opportunity they will not treat you fairly and in Swiss way. This place is a huge disappointment. NB: I am Swiss, and I am very disappointed how this places gets away with their dubious practices and, hence damages the Swiss image.

It feels very much like an old European ski lodge and has amazing views of the Matterhorn from the room balconies. When we first arrived at the hotel with our group, everyone was out on their balconies in awe of the view. It was absolutely specular! Zermatt is a very walkable town and the only vehicles they allow in town are small, electric shuttles. The Hotel National is a short, maybe 10 minute walk, from the Main Street and all the shops. It is well worth your time to walk around town. Make sure and check out the historic district and the old buildings they've preserved. There is no air conditioning at The Hotel National, so it may be warm during the summer. We stayed here for two nights and June and it didn't get warm at night but cooled off later evening. The Hotel National is right by the train tracks, so it can be a little noisy in the morning when the trains are the most active. There are also noisy birds around 4:30am, which woke us up. If you sleep with your window open you're going to have an early morning wake-up call.

After placing our order, we quickly noticed our neighbor was eating the beef tartare, and politely asked the wife if she could please add it to our order. She gruffly said no. Perhaps she was worried about what her husband working in the kitchen would think about "changing" our order. This was a mere bump in the road compared to the grand finale. For desert my son ordered profiteroles and we made it very clear that he is unable to eat chocolate. After we sent the chocolate covered desert back with a request for it to come back on the side for one of our diners who likes chocolate, the chef/owner/husband came out in a RAGE. We have never been accosted like this in a restaurant. He told us he'd be happy if we never returned to his restaurant and we were afraid that he might hit us. All we asked for was chocolate on the side. He obviously felt comfortable taking his problems out on his guests. I ate here 20 years ago with my fiancée and we had a terrific meal. It is sad that things are not working out. Unless you're in the mood for being abused, please don't go here. P.S. the french fries are frozen.
