Ok, it is time to stop crying about the disappearance of Alain Parodi. He is gone, and so is his…read morestar. The old Lou Cigalon was a special place, but clearly the cost of staffing a restaurant to maintain his Michelin star drove him into bankruptcy. The good news is this lovely room in busy Valbonne has recently re-opened under new ownership and is well worth a visit for excellent food at a fair price. The new owners have been in business since summer 2010 and, to be honest, probably should have changed the name of the place. It is really no longer Lou Cigalon. But, what it is is quite good in its own right. Owned by a husband/wife (Maman et Pere) team (he cooks, she serves) the new owners provide a meal that is well prepared and even a bit innovative. We had Duck and Cod and both were delicious. Though, the duck might have benefited from a little more caramelization. The entrée was a duo of bacalao - Morue (dried cod) and Salmon. It was much lighter than the traditional potato & cream based bacalao and really delicious. Desert was a lovely bread pudding (a gateau Breton) of prunes. The service was friendly, but not intrusive, and the room remains exactly as it was before, charming and comfortable. In summary, while no longer a 1 star Gourmand experience, this is a delicious, above average, and very fairly priced (especially at lunch) respite from the usual tourist oriented fare that abounds in Valbonne.

I have come to Mougins for the past 10 years... frequented numerous restaurants in the surrounding towns, including Cannes. It is located in the small village of Mouans Sartoux, easy parking, on a small street. But lively place after 8 pm with friendly locals and a few tourists dining. Staff all speak good English... young and friendly! We came along about 1945, with no reservation on a Wednesday night, just 2, got a nice table in small street. Would however suggest reserving.... Excellent fresh bread... 4 choices of Rose, 19 to 36 euro bottle.... the Brillo was 19, local, excellent value! We started with Baked goat cheese in oven, came with warm fresh toast, fig compote... we shared this! It was plenty! We then opted for the 3 course meal at 34 Euro each.... Starter: one had 6 fabulous escargots, and I had a warm duck salad, with 3 kinds of duck, including a fois gras main :One has Entrecôte steak, which was an 8-10 oz filet mignon really, accompanied with choices of potatoes ...and large dish of bernaise sauce....I had duck breast w honey reduction and porcini mushrooms, accompanied w fresh green beans w pesto.... excellent! Dessert: one had a warm fudge cake, like a lava cake back home.... and I had the cafe gormond, a local request usually not on menus... you get 4 to 5 small portions of variety of desserts, and cafe! This dessert offering again is usually not publicized.... so just ask! Best dessert value in France! Have never been disappointed! Awesome meal! Friendly staff! Great Value! Note... see pictures... and the only reason I did not give 5 stars is because they only had outdoor seating.... at this time of year... and humidity can be high June-August here.... so nice to have that option... it was not so humid that particular night... so dining outside was ok ! Bon Appetite from Mougins!

The clouds had just parted, the rain over, and it was time for some authentic French cuisine. The biggest seller at Aux Trois Etages, the terrace overlooking Mougins. A two top was available so we jumped at the opportunity. I felt a little self-conscious as we were a little underdressed, but it was after all a Tuesday evening, and light on diners. A lovely thing about the French, and there are many lovely things, is they provide a pre-fix option instead of al la carte if you so desire. I had the goat cheese salad as a started, a duck l'orange dish as the main with various E countre Monts added to make it a pretty full meal. Paired with a regional rose, it was simply divine. We finished the evening with a chocolate cake with a melted center that dripped ever so slightly onto our plate. It was majestic to watch and delightful to eat. I could not have been happier with my experience. In addition, Mougins is what you imagine every little French medieval village to be and more. Beautiful little streets that seem to pull you into a maze of ivy and history. I can't recommend it enough! I went to Nice and Cannes and neither were to my liking. Too much fakery and pomp, little substance of the French soul. I hope I may return once again.
