The flavours are so delicate and one would not even think to pair certain items. The chef captured perfectly the diversity of the African / Caribbean diaspora. The food makes me so proud. Remarkable. The decor was tasteful and we immediately felt at ease when we walked in. The colour scheme and layout creates a chill vibe and music was perfect . Relaxed yet attentive staff. The portions are so massive that it's one of those rare occasions where I would actually recommend they give less food. It's just too much. Mind you, we were travelling back home the next day so ordered quite a bit. But even one dish each would have been a lot. I don't understand how one could live or be near Montreal and not stop what they are doing and come here for lunch / dinner. This must be a top 100 restaurant in Canada. How could it not be ? From the accra, the fresh watercress salad and slaw to the succulent fried chicken , savoury red snapper. I couldn't get enough of the variety of rices they provided ( Haitian , Jamaican etc). It was just all so mouthwatering. People this place is beyond the real deal. They set a standard of how all restaurants should be in showcasing the absolute best. The pre fixe menu for the MTLatable had a lot of options and we were glad most of the options were gluten free. I had the Conch Gratin which was good but was a huge portion so more bread would have been needed as I didn't want to eat it right off of the spoon. My friend got the jerk shrimp which were very fishy smelling and tasing and just alright. Our entrees were the star of the night - the Grilled Fish and the Vegan Curry. For the dessert the server recommended the Pina Colada which was tasty but basically coconut ice cream with a pineapple. The service was very slow despite it not being very busy on the snowy night. We had to flag down a server just to order drinks after waiting for a while. There was a large birthday party - they were the only other clients - and they seemed to be taking all the time and attention of the staff.

We didn't have a reservation but the sweet man who greeted us found us a table very fast. This is a family owned business and you can tell how much pride and love they put into it. Both of the owners explained all the dishes to us and were so helpful in making our decisions. We started with the lemonade which is house made by their own mother every day. It had a different type of sweetness to it, almost like it was made with honey instead of sugar but I really enjoyed it. We also got the Trio of Salads which were so good! A few of them were a bit spicy but nothing we couldn't handle. They also kept the bread coming which I never hate! We also split the Tuna Brik and it was amazing! For our mains we had the Honey Lamb which was covered in pistachios. The lamb fell right of the bone and was so tender. We also tried the Ojja which is more of an elevated Shakshuka - dipping the bread in the sauce was a highlight at the end. Overall, this was such a unique meal with wonderful flavors. The owners service was the true stand out of this meal. They really do provide a wonderful experience for all of their guests.

You are welcomed so warmly by the staff, always helpful but NEVER intrusive. Honestly makes you feel like you are at a Louisiana local neighbourhood Chow-Down, as friend not a patron. Love that about La Lou. Last night's dinner started with a Hurricane, for me and a spicy Caesar for my partner. The Hurricane was delicious, a perfect blend of fruit juices and rum, I could drink these and nothing else, for the rest of my life. My partner reported the Caesar was perfect, from the mix to the spicy bean garnish. Our appetizers were Hush Puppies (of course) and Crab Cakes. The Hush Puppies were little balls of flavour, texture and taste, prepared to perfection. The crab cakes had the crispy exterior and soft, savoury and delicious interior. Love the presentation. I should have taken photos but I was too interested in devouring these little jewels. My partner ordered the Meat Jambalaya, he was blown away by the perfect seasoning, combination of the ingredients, Andouille sausage, smoked ham and chicken. He says he highly recommends this dish. Ordinarily, I go with the blackened fish of the day, but this visit I thought I would try Lou's Famous Fried Chicken. There is a reason it is "Famous". The chicken was juicy and tender, the coating was crisp and delicious. It came with a side of seasoned fries, delicious and tender. We desperately wanted the incredible Bananas Foster dessert but there was no way we could eat another bite, so we finished off with 2 BB King specialty coffees. You have to try one, if you go; delicious! Again, I forgot photos! Coffee, Bailey's and darned if I can remember the other ingredients. They are listed on the menu. All this to say that if you are visiting Montréal - this is a "Must visit" destination. We live 65 kms away and gladly brave the traffic to avail ourselves of this little treasure chest of Louisiana flavours.

Apparently this place has been around for about 35 years along with other spots in this neighborhood. I was starving so we ordered right away and asked for sweet potato fries. They came out super hot since the kitchen was just a few steps away. They had a very flakey flour coating and were delicious with the sauce. The paneed chicken with creamy green peppercorn sauce was good with the garlic mashed potatoes. Not bad but kind of expensive for what it was. As for the meat jambalaya, it seemed a bit skimpy on the meats... Just a few pieces of sausage, ham and chicken. Good tomato based sauce. Overall food to price value is a 4/5.

She did continuously bring out water jugs for us but go up to pay when you're ready to leave, it'll be faster. The menu is split into appetizers, salads, seafood, main courses, house specialties, burgers & wraps, roti, table d'hote and desserts. Their house specialties (like jerk chicken and curry goat) are pricey ($19.95). - Stew chicken ($12.95) - chicken slowly cooked in a rich homemade gravy. I went with the stewed chicken; tender but salty. Rice and peas were dry and a tad bland. Best thing was the plantains (sweet and tender) and the carrots. - Negril chicken ($14.49) - char grilled chicken breast marinated and cooked in a sweet and spicy Caribbean spice. One relative found it "spicy". - Curry goat roti ($10.49) - my mom went with the goat; tasty and with a good bite. Oddly, they put in pieces that have bones in it. Roti itself was strangely dry. - Grilled salmon ($19.95) - char grilled salmon seasoned with Caribbean spices. Didn't find anything special about MB. Pricey for what you get, especially with so many other quality spots nearby.
