I'm certainly no expert on Austrian or German cuisine, but what I've been told is that they are fairly similar. That was our finding on going to Austria. We had schnitzel, kspatzel, some lovely German beers, and the number of desserts that it incorporated rhubarb. The place has a very German/Austrian vibe with a lot of dark tone wood, a number of taxidermy animal heads, and some pretty intricate woodwork. They were able to serve our party of eight very quickly, and made for a very enjoyable and comfortable dinner, as we ended up staying there for about 2 1/2 hours. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. There's also a very nice park outside. It was nice to let the kids go run around while we were waiting for the food! The servers were very attentive and took good care of us. I have no idea about other Austrian options in the area, but if you're looking for something classic, this place is one you should check out.

Good solid spot that truly looks like an Austrian cafe. Two great servers run everything and I mean…read morethe bar, the front and the tables so it can get slow so have another of their great beers. I had the fried chicken with perhaps the greatest pan fried potatoes I've ever had. The rest of the table had the small schnitzel which looked great. The dessert however stole the show. I know it's all messed up but I think it's called Kaiserschwsrmen. Sooooooo good! I'd be back in a hot minute. Oh and have schnapps!!!

My friend in all her wisdom decided I needed to experience schnitzel, so she brought me to this…read moreplace which is apparently famous for it. They brought out this fried thing that was bigger then a medium sized dog, but a de-boned dog without the fur and pummeled flat beyond recognition with a hammer. I have never seen a larger piece of contiguous fried meat in all my life...it was laughably large. I can't decide if it tasted good, and no amount of mustard or salt could bully this fried monster into tasting interesting, but perhaps I would have enjoyed this more on a cold day...this was on a hot Sunday afternoon in the summer and did not fit the day at all. During the winter I can imagine this could be amazing. After eating about one quarter of it and beginning to feel both sick and sleepy, I joked with my friend, "Oh my god, I'm passing into a schnitzel coma". She said that the word in German for this feeling is Schnitzelkoma. You would think that if the actual word for feeling sick after eating too much food has "schnitzel" and "coma" in it, that people would stop eating schnitzel. Am I taking crazy pills, or is the word schnitzelkoma not a serious negative indicator? I suppose everyone should do this once in their life, to experience "schnitzelkoma", and to learn to never do this to themselves again. This is a good place to learn this lesson. It's been 24 hours and I still don't feel right. Strangely, I wound up craving this a few days later.

My friends and I were on a weinersnitchel adventure, and a fellow food writer had told us this was…read morethe place to go for an authentic meal. We piled into Louis on a cold winter night hoping some shnitz and brew would warm us up. Our waitress, who was very helpful, told us it would be best to split the massive meal as it was too large to be eaten alone. Only one of our party braved ordering a "mini" schnitz, which ended up being pretty freaking' ginormous. The rest of us split the fired pice of pork with cheese and tomatoes on top and even then, we couldn't finish it. Now, for my American readers out there let me warn you: Weinersnitchel is kind of like a Bloomin' Onion. You eat it once in your lifetime, then never again despite its amazingness. The reason being is that it's likely 3,000 calories (per serving, and it's easily 2 servings). So enjoy it once, because afterward you'll feel as guilty as a contestant on Biggest Loser eating a donut after a workout. Since we split the food and got a couple drinks apiece, it was pretty much a bargain. The warmth of the restaurant made us extend our meal as long as possible.
