We came here with some friends when we wanted an authentic meal from the region. We were very happy with our choice! I'm certainly no expert on Austrian or German cuisine, but what I've been told is that they are fairly similar. That was our finding on going to Austria. We had schnitzel, kspatzel, some lovely German beers, and the number of desserts that it incorporated rhubarb. The place has a very German/Austrian vibe with a lot of dark tone wood, a number of taxidermy animal heads, and some pretty intricate woodwork. They were able to serve our party of eight very quickly, and made for a very enjoyable and comfortable dinner, as we ended up staying there for about 2 1/2 hours. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. There's also a very nice park outside. It was nice to let the kids go run around while we were waiting for the food! The servers were very attentive and took good care of us. I have no idea about other Austrian options in the area, but if you're looking for something classic, this place is one you should check out. read more

Good solid spot that truly looks like an Austrian cafe. Two great servers run everything and I mean the bar, the front and the tables so it can get slow so have another of their great beers. I had the fried chicken with perhaps the greatest pan fried potatoes I've ever had. The rest of the table had the small schnitzel which looked great. The dessert however stole the show. I know it's all messed up but I think it's called Kaiserschwsrmen. Sooooooo good! I'd be back in a hot minute. Oh and have schnapps!!! read more

We were in Berlin during our American thanksgiving break. One of our primary culinary goals was to enjoy a traditional German meal. Who would have thought it would have been a challenge to find one. We were lucky to meet an American businessman who was in town and introduced us to his German counterpart. He recommended Austria and he was correct. We did have to make a reservation, the place is pretty popular. As the name states this restaurant is Austrian but that is pretty close both geographically and culinarily. Dinner was great. We started with salads and luckily the waitress mentioned they were large. We got 2 for our table of 4 and we barely finished them. The salads were so fresh, Europeans are so spoiled they get such fresh ingredients for their meals every day. We then got the following dishes for dinner: Beef stew - a thick and hearty sauce that tasted of red wine and spices. This was obviously cooked for hours and the chucks of meat were so tender and melt in your mouth. Elephant ear veal - the schnitzel was perfectly cooked hammered out to the size of small elephant ear then breaded and fried. My daughter loved it and there was enough for all of us to get a large bite. Pork sauerkraut and a big round dumpling - this is a traditional dinner in my wife's Bohemian family. The pork was tender and perfectly roasted, the sauerkraut was delicious and full of flavor and the dumpling was like a baseball, huge and tasty. Cheese spatzle - this is a traditional spatze covered in a gooey cheese. Daughter number 2 really enjoyed it. For dessert we were all very full so we passed. This was a great stop on our tour of Berlin and we highly recommend it. They did take credit cards which doesn't happen in all the places in town. I went there yesterday with my family for dinner. Our friend recommended this place for the Schnitzel which does live up to the praise. The beef stew was the star, though, really tasty and cooked to perfection. Big leaf salad was good as well. The only thing bothered me and stopping me from giving this a four or five star was the service. The waiter who served us gave us a look when we said we prefer to sit inside rather than outside, when we ordered small beers and a small schnitzel. I don't know what the problem was. I saw him looking quite friendly when he was serving another table which led me to think whether it was the fact that we're Asians that made him treat us in such an unfriendly if not insulting manner or it is because we did not order everything in a big portion. Service in Berlin is in general quite unimpressive compared to places like Munich or actually anywhere in the world. I never thought I would have to write a negative review on service as it usually never bothers me. In this case, it was such a shame that a restaurant that serves superb food is undermined by their staff. read more

This place used to be fantastic - the weiner schnitzel hung over the plate and tasted wonderful. We've eaten here multiple times and, until recently, knew that we could expect a good meal. The waiters were great, too. Not so much now - they've cut back considerably, on food quality, portions and service. The last time we ate there, our waiter was inattentive at best and, when I didn't tip (mainly because I wasn't sure if it was customary to do so, not because of his attitude) he made sure I knew about it on the way out! Excellent wienerschnitzel here. The cucumber salad was actually one of the best parts of the meal, and something I'd like to make for myself stateside. It was sweet, juicy, and the perfect light complement to a massive sheet of battered and fried pork. Unfortunately, it is a tad pricey. For the veal schnitzel (the authentic one) it is something like 20 euros. If you can't make it out to the real Vienna during your trip, going to Austria in Berlin is a good facsimile. read more

Supposedly this is the place to try Weiner Schnitzel when you're in Berlin. I had heard about this place from my intensive German professor, so I decided to try it out with a bunch of my friends. On the U-Bahn there, we were talking about big "Weiners" because a couple of us (I'm guilty too) were under the false preconception that Weiner Schitzels was a big sausage. When we got our plates, we found not a big sausage but rather a heary piece of fried veal. Since an animal was tortured from birth for my enjoyment, I decided to enjoy it well. It was pretty good, a bit bland, but hey, I guess that's all German food. It came with oiled potatoes (delicious, much better than mashed potatoes in the states), and vinegared (picked?) cucumbers (which were SUPER DELICIOUS - I wish I could get a huge jar of them and eat them all day) A must try when visiting Berlin. We were SUPER full by the end of the meal, so be sure to bring a belt where you can loosen it up 2 notches after you finish your meal. read more

The decor is lovely; dark wood, many antlers and a lovely copper bar. Service is average, cold and with some longer than desired waits. Everyone at our table ordered the schnitzel as we had heard it was the thing to get. The small portion was definitely enough food for me and the large portion was enormous! The meat was pounded thin and was reasonably tender. The breading was tasteless and flaked off about 1/2 the schnitzel. It was an extremely average schnitzel. It was served with a cucumber salad and a potato salad. Surprisingly both tasted alike, very sweet. The potatoes were a total mush and the cucumbers could have used some more vinegar or something to liven then up. None of the food was bad, however it was very expensive for the quality and left me unhappy. I would definitely not try it again. read more

It is not cheap by any means, Berlin standards or New York.. but it is a place you would go to for special occasions or finer dining I imagine.. comprable to a steak house. I think our meal ended up being like €35-40 per person (salad, entree, dessert, bier). This is a great place. It is a friendly, neighboorhood type place. We arrived without reservations (which I would recommend). We waited by the bar, and a few minutes later our party of three were seated at a large round table that had two other guests. Americans might be freaked out by this, but this is quite common in Germany, especially in neighboorhoods and pubs. Easy to get to on the S-bahn. The Wiener Schnitzel was so large, that it more than covered the plate. It was overwhelming. No one in our party ate their whole portion. The cucumber salad was very good, as well as the side of potatoes. The restaurent is decorated with a lot of artifacts from Austria, including artwork and pictures. You must eat at Austria at least once and have their signature Wiener Schnitzel while in Berlin. Friends of mine who live on the same street as the restaurant thought this might be a nice place to meet up for dinner while I was in town. They asked, ''do you like Wiener Schnitzel?'' I couldn't say... I wasn't even sure what it was. Now I can tell you, that I do, indeed, like Wiener Schnitzel. It was just divine. The potato salad was just lovely, and I loved the pickled veggies. The combination was a winner in my mouth. Nothing rounds out a meal in Germany better than bottomless steins of local beer (although I might add that Wiener Schnitzels are famously from Austria, as the restaurant's name suggests). The restaurant decor was very charming, and it felt very welcoming and old world. The wait staff was very charming and engaging. We all wanted to try a dessert, but quite frankly it was not humanely possible. Simply a lovely meal in a lovely location! N.B. the restaurant can be a bit difficult to locate, especially in the evening. Directions: If you're coming by metro, you'll have to take the U7 and get out at a station called "Gneisenaustraße". When you're on the street, turn into Mittenwalder Straße, go straight down (you have to head towards Bergmannstraße), at the end of the street you turn left and you should find the restaurant at the first corner to your right. read more

Holy wiener schnitzel! This place served me a fried pork cutlet that I could have literally wrapped around my head or worn as a shawl. Served over potatoes with a beer, it was pure German bliss if not exactly health food but after a solid day of walking all over Berlin I felt no guilt. This place is apparently a go-to for locals for the schnitzel and I can see why. Unfortunately the service, in particular the older gentleman, is so obnoxious and rude that the entire experience is ruined. If this fellow is the owner then shame on him for this reception. Before visiting Austria, I had such high exceptions, because I heard such great things from multiple people. When I stepped into the established, it was a completely different vibe than what I had hoped. The waiter (most likely the owner) that served us automatically had an attitude when we asked him if they were still serving lunch or dinner. The Weiner Schnitzel was very good, and the potatoes and cucumber sides added an exceptional amount of flavor as well, but this did not excuse the service. When we went up to pay, he responded "are you done," and proceeded to hand us the bill. We paid and asked him politely if he could give us change for a 5, and he responded with a harsh "No." On the way out, my friend murmured, "Oh you're so nice, " and he responded, "so nice of you to tip," in a clipped tone as he sipped his wine from behind the bar. We were livid. Tips are included only when they are deserved, and in this instance, it most certainly was not. The food was great, but I definitely will not be back to Austria. read more
