This was close to our Air B&B and we really wanted to have some schnitzel so we were excited to get a table w/o a reservation. My daughter and I both had the schnitzel (I had the smaller "lady" portion) which was still plenty! My husband had a steak with this delicious onion gravy and roasted potatoes. The Schnitzel was great and probably the only reason for people to come by. Huge size, great crunch and nicely made no doubts! I have had better Schnitzel on berlin though. The asparagus and sauce were disappointing. Especially that sauce we didn't enjoy, it was a bit sour rather than creamy. You'll be charged extra for literally everything. Fantastic spot for authentic German/Austrian food. A bit over priced but the portions are huge so you may be able to split a meal. My husband and I shared the Weiner Schnitzel and a large mixed salad. It was so nice to finally have some greens! The veal was perfectly cooked, lightly breaded and not greasy. My group of three came here without a reservation. I would recommend getting one though as the place was completely booked otherwise. The inside looks pretty modest; the food taste and presentation are the true spectacles here! I liked the menu and had trouble picking out something because there were so many delicious-sounding choices! I ultimately went with the kürbis (pumpkin) gnocchi, which was the vegetarian option that day. We did not have to wait too long for our food. When it arrived, it looked absolutely beautiful. When I think of Austrian food, "light" and "colorful" and "fresh" are not the first adjectives that come to mind, but somehow all of those descriptions would fit the dishes we ordered. I was not expecting any of our dishes to come with a side, but we all got some type of salad. My dish unfortunately looked a lot better than it tasted, hence the one star off. However, I sampled my two dinner guests' dishes, the schweinebraten mit zwiebeln (roast pork with onions) and the tafelspitz (beef boiled in broth) and they tasted absolutely WONDERFUL. The tafelspitz came with very fresh and spicy meerrettich (horseradish), which was a really nice touch. I would definitely visit again, but this time, order something meaty!!! read more

Once arrived the waitress lead us in a room not so big and a bit chaotic because of a long table of persons (celebration of something?). Since we don't usually like to eat too much, we ordered 2 "lady" shcnitzel which are suppose to be not too big like the normal ones. After a while we have been served with two large schnitzel which were covering the plates completely :) The meat of the schnitzel is veal; very tasty and tender; I 've never ate a fried so dry and crisp like this one. The slice is very large but thin, it ships with two pieces of lemon and a leaf of salad .. the result is you cannot stop eating. Under the meat there is a bit of potatoes salad, that actually I would have put a little more. Both with this plate you get also a small cup with cucumber salad, a little bit anonymous compared to the rest of the dish. Anyway, in the end I've finished mine and some of my girlfriend one, which was too much for her. Easily the best meal out of some very good food on a recent trip to Berlin. Very good service from a waitress/manager who spoke great English. We had a starter of beef soup with liver dumplings and cold pork and then two schnitzels. At first we thought about ordering sides but the lady just shook her head and said we'd have too much. She was dead right as the schnitzels were massive. We shared an apple desert even though we were stuffed - just being greedy. If you've been to Vienna this place ranks alongside the best biesls you've seen there. Very highly recommended. The only place I would definitely go back to eat if/when I revisit Berlin. read more

The Gasthaus Alt Wien is a proper Austrian restaurant. They offer Austrian classics like Wiener Schnitzel, Zwiebelrostbraten or Schweinsbraten. I highly recommend that you reserve your table as the restaurant gets quite busy. The food is very good and the portions are more than generous. After all the excellent reviews on Qype we decided to give Alt Wien a try. The reviews have not been exaggerated. The place met our expectations. The staff were friendly and efficient. The celery cream soup had a nice distinctive flavor and was not smothered by cream. The garlic croutons were small and crisp. We were offered bread and received a nice bread basket with white, rye and a delicious rye full corn bread. I had ordered the Schnitzel which was truly amazing. Paper thin, lightly breaded and fried to perfection. Accompanied by lukewarm potato salad and a marinated cucumber salad that was not too sweet. My wife chose the Tafelspitz. The meat was tender and served in a light broth and with freshly grated horseradish. The geröstete Erdäpfel were not what she expected as they were more akin to a type of Rösti than the fried potatoes they do so well in Berlin. The reason I am not giving the fifth star was the vegetable. On the menu it states that Tafelspitz is served with Rahm-Wirsing (creamed savoy cabbage). Instead without any mention this was substituted by a mixture of cauliflower and some green leaf vegetable. That was a bit of a disappointment. We drank a nice open Cabernet Merlot which like the whole wine list was reasonably priced. All in all a very nice evening which will be repeated. read more
