wow, what is there to not like about this place…read more first, let me tell you their service is exceptional and very friendly to tourists which is hard to get sometimes in the area. we put our name down an hr before our requested time and they were very accommodating to save us the table. we originally came for the famous moules frites. found out it was all sold out for the night and we were very disappointed. we still decided to stay and try Georges4 due to the glowing reviews. thankfully, we were not let down twice! my bf and i ended up ordering just a bowl of fish soup and the waterzooi which is a specialty at Georges. i've had waterzooi previously in Boston and wouldn't say i was a fan.. but wow, Georges' waterzooi definitely changed my impression on the dish entirely! the bowl came with 3-4 types of fish fillet accompanied by other small sea critters like baby shrimps and musles. the dish delivered such a fragrant ocean breeze and the flavors were spot on! the fish were not overcooked and simply to perfection! the fish soup was very delicious too! a little pricey but really worth it to try! it will set your benchmark for fish soup very high for future bowls lol overall, i would recommend georges IV if you're in gent! the seafood is super fresh! tip for travelers: they offer free wifi!

The restaurant is in the middle of town within a few blocks to the main town square. The menu has pictures of the nunnery attire, maybe how they brewed their own beer? They only had it in Dutch, no English menu. Food: 3/5. Bland food, which is not uncommon for Flemish cuisine, but meat was also quite tough. We tried the 2 most popular dishes, Brochette Oud Clooster, and Rundsstoverij met Westmalle Dubbel, and were not impressed. Both bland. The brochette was supposed to be medium rare but came out well done. Dry and tough. The dipping sauce has a hint of curry but wasn't enough to carry the whole dish. The stew has a yummy base, I could pick out the beer flavors (Belgians truly have the best beers in the world). Meat pieces were tough, which is a shame given this is a stew. They should have use a fattier cut of beef like chuck. Meme Gusta has a similar but much more flavorful Flemish stew. The no-bake cheese cake was light and refreshing. Good for 1 person, small to share between 2. Service: 2/5. They had no English menu. At this point I have come to Belgium enough to pick out a few familiar terms, but I would have liked to be able to see what other dishes they had. Had to aggressively flag down waiter whenever we needed something. they also charge €1.80 for tap water. This place is popular enough even for locals that one can't get in without reservations. We were told they only have 2 slots: 6-8 or 8-10. We picked the earlier one. The restaurant was only half full until about 7.

But they do their best to seat as many people as possible. I got in fairly quickly because i was alone. The food was fantastic. I had the Carbonade a la Biere, and it was so great! Like a beef stew and very tasty. Also had some good Belgian beer. Service was attentive and very fast. The restaurant is lively and exciting - not really a quiet romantic dinner. But a lot of fun!

While the register states No Cards one of the servers told the table next to mine not worry when they didn't have enough euros. Only a drink menu was provided and the dishes being served that day were handwritten on moveable boards or posted on the wall. I had on my list a couple to try but finally went with the Belgian carbonades à la biere which was beef stew with mashed potatoes in a dark gravy made with beer. The plate was quite generous and much appreciated since I devoured it. I enjoyed the creaminess of the potatoes swirled with gravy but the meat could've been a tad bit more tender. Service was good. I think everyone on the floor stopped by my table for one reason or the other. Ambiance was casual and looked like many people were taking their time over their meals. When finished you need head to the register to settle the tab. I paid in cash. Worth a return visit.

This is fabulous place for a meal in Ghent. This city is one of my favorites in Europe, and I just…read morekeep finding one gem after another to make it all the more attractive. The credit for specifically finding this place, however, goes to my Benelux business partner. He lives in a village nearby, so he's basically a local. But I think this was his first time at this establishment, also. I'll talk about the food in a moment, but the highlight of this occasion was unquestionably the ambiance. This restaurant is housed in an elegant older home in what I can only surmise to have been a posh neighborhood at the turn of the last century. There are remnants of a carriage house in the back, for example. To be sure, the neighborhood is still nice enough, but maybe not a refuge for the rich and famous anymore. The house itself is beautifully decorated. While entering patrons know they are about to embark on a special dining experience, they could easily get the feeling for a brief moment while walking to their seats that they are being escorted into a swank dinner party. The vintage decor in this establishment could not be more ideal, replete with large chandeliers, a lovely fireplace, antique furniture and more. Victorian elegance is on display. We went to this restaurant for our midday meal on a weekday. We were a little early in the lunch hour, as my colleague collected me from the train station a little past 11 AM for our business that day. So we entered the restaurant before noon. In fact, there was only ever one other party in the dining room during the time we were there, which made for a wonderfully quiet, relaxed lunch. The service matched expectations for a place like this. My feeling was that our interface was mainly with the proprietors. I find that to be an extremely positive difference between US and European restaurants. In the latter case, it seems like I am more often dealing with people who are more invested in the success of the business. Our lunch fare was basically a set offering, but that worked well for us. We started nicely with a small piece of smoked salmon with vegetables and a light vinegar-based sauce. We then moved to a tasty pea soup concoction that was outside of the norm. Our server mentioned to us what made it unusual, but unfortunately I don't remember what she said. I just recall it was very satisfying. Our main course was a white fish preparation that was served on a small bed of lightly grilled vegetables with a saffron sauce. The meal culminated with a lovely creme brulee. Add in the coffee and it was a perfect finish. It was a little heavy for lunch, but I'm not going to dwell on that. My colleague picked up the tab, so I did not see the final cost. And since we really did not have a menu, I had no way to even make an estimate. But he did not complain. I can only say that, whatever he paid, from my evaluation it was almost certainly worth it. I'd love to go to this place again, perhaps next time for dinner.
